I just assume you're straight unless I hear otherwise.

There are two men living together in a house across the street from mine, and the house's former resident told us they were a same-sex married couple. But we took it with a grain of salt since that guy is a bit crazy. When speaking to one of the men, I simply referred to the other man living with him as his "roommate", trying to be neutral on the issue. We're pretty sure the men are gay by the way they act, but I never bring up their sexuality when talking to either of them, and pretend that I don't know they're gay.

I'll admit, I sometimes crack jokes about my new neighbors being gay (hard to resist sometimes)... but only around people whom I know will find them funny. My father does, but my mother does not, and scolds me for it (as well as for the jokes I make sometimes about fat people, especially ones we see on TV)

I try to act with a little class around people whom I don't know that well, but I can certainly have a low-brow sense of humor like so many other good ol' Southern boys. Wink

You don’t know who will find those jokes funny so what I would do is to keep it to yourself until you find out your target can take it as a joke. I found it hilarious but people like Innov and Dylan didn’t because to them (I believe) they probably felt targeted. Not everyone finds the same things funny so it’s best to just watch what you’re saying.

Exactly that! There was a South Park joke that I thought was hilarious but my mate did not find that funny at all. Father Ted’s another example with Ted doing a Chinese impression to amuse Dougal and the Chinese family didn’t like it and thought he was being racist. (Which is what this post reminds me of.)

My mother might say, "You should be have born Chinese" and I'll squint my eyes and speak in broken English. But yeah, not something I'd do in public or in a social setting.
