Player of the Year 2019 Nominees
12/31/19 at 22:16:22

We have concluded another successful year of MKW TTs. We had 150 World records this your (The most since 2011).

I'll nominate a few players for person of the year and I'll see what you all think. In a few days I'll create a poll for the award.

LukeGB - With WRs on rMC, WGM no glitch, rDS, rBC3, DC, DDR, rMC3, and TF glitch this is a no-brainer.

Justin - I nominate him for becoming #1 in the AF rankings in the beginning of the year and creating a supernatural timesheet. As well WRs on rSL glitch, MT glitch, and KC on which he got the first 2:17.

Bryce - I know this one is a bit of a hot take but I thought he might deserve the award because he was the 2nd player ever to get a WR in every month in the first half of a year (Fox 2015 was the first time). With his work in optimizing MC glitch with the new strat, being the first person to get a World Record with the new strat on rSL glitch in May, and his work in pushing MG glitch to an unthinkable level.

Braxien - Similarly to what Bryce did on MG, Braxien also dropped a nuke on CM glitch, pushing it all the way to a .4. Vincent also was the first one to make the new TF glitch and achieving a WR there a few days later. He also achieved ARs on CM no glitch and TF no glitch.

Sosis - After snagging the first .4 on rSGB and a .7 on rDH no glitch he got to work grinding out rSL no glitch with 4 WRs and then MMM where he got 7 whole WRs and the first .4

Thanks for reading and let me know what you think. Happy New Year Smiley

Justin - Overtook Fox in AF, 8 WRs

David - Had mad potential on quite a few tracks, 1 WR

Ross - Made massive improvements and got some awesome times, 6 WRs

Based on my personal opinions (with poor insight as well):

Top Five Contenders:

Luke Brown, UK
-Achieved 21 world records on eight unique tracks.
-Holds nine standing world records.
-Is the first player to achieve 50 world records within the span of three consecutive years (the previous record was 47 WRs by Martin Fox from 2013-15).
-Is 1st place in the MK Leaderboards Worldwide Non-SC category and is tied for 2nd place in the Worldwide Overall category.

Justin Hitchcock, USA

-Achieved seven world records on four unique tracks.
-At his apex of the year held four standing world records.
-Achieved #1 in the MKWPP.
-Is 1st place in the MK Leaderboards Worldwide Overall and Unrestricted categories and is 1st Place of all the point ranking categories for the Americas and the USA.

Logan Tracey, USA
-Achieved 16 world records on five unique categories/tracks.
-Holds three standing world records.
-Continued dominance of both rDKM categories and is emerging to become the champion of the new TF glitch category.

Cole Gilbert, Canada

-Seven world record achieved (all on LC) within the span of two months and within the difference of ~0.100 seconds.
-Continued dominance on LC and is 4th to Infi on DDR, Totom on rWS and Mr. Bean on WGM glitch for longest continuous duration of world record dominance on a single track.
-Broke the 1:08.7 barrier on LC.
-Is in a three-way tie for 3rd place in the MK Leaderboards Canadian No-SC category.
-Is 3rd place on the Combined Mario Kart Rankings.

AJ Rangthale, USA

-Achieved 13 world records on four unique tracks.
-Holds 3 standing world records.
-Is 3rd place in the MKW Leaderboards in the Americas Non-SC category.
-Continued dominance on MMM and rSL.

Honorable Mentions:

Arvo Koskikallio, Finland
Blaze, USA
Bryce, USA
David Morton, UK
Ross Coleman, UK
Vincent Braixen, USA

Special Honors:

Niyake, Japan: For making a comeback after being dethroned by the new quacker strat on GV glitch after his long battle with King Alex. On September 23rd, he set three world records within the span on one day.
McRaren, Japan: For making perhaps the biggest comeback in MKW WR history after losing the battle with Mr. Bean on WGM glitch over nine years ago. It amazes me how someone who last had a world record nearly a decade ago still has the drive to claim another one today on the same category.

Justin - sets god tier times in every single category consistently including some WRs. Also dethroning fox on the AF chart was massive.

Luke - Sets a plethora of WRs including groundbreaking records on mc3 dc and rds among others, also held 10 WRs even if it was only for a few hours.

Sosis - pushed the limits of his own tracks down so much more, he’s now way ahead of the competition on MMM and rSL and he also set some other very strong times including a WR on rDH and rSGB earlier in the year

Logan - Got involved in the destruction of 3 tracks with new glitch strategies(MC, rSL and TF) getting WRs on all 3 including the first 49 on MC and the first 1:46 on TF (was still 2019 in his timezone) on top of this he continued to improve his records on rdkm getting the first ever 1:58 on the shortcut category and he also implemented a new strat for no glitch which could see him get a 2:04 at some point in the future.

Bryce - Made massive improvements on MC and MG throughout the year now sitting with times in those tracks that I never thought would be possible. He also got on the rSL bandwagon becoming the first to get a WR with the new strategy of landing back in the track and he also got the WR for the shortest WR of all time Grin

Honorable - Braixen, David, Connor, Cole, Vincent B and of course, Filler.

2. Justin: Got #1 Site Champion for both Combined and NonSC

4. Arvo: Keeps chopping down AF like a lumberjack. Leaves no flap left behind.

5. Sosis: 4 unique WRs. crazy rSL and MMM times. Some other regional times were achieved too

Honorable mentions;
David
Braixen
Bryce

Justin - absolutely obliterated fox on the AF chart who was thought to be unbeatable by some for a while, some very impressive WRs including the first 2:17 on KC and an MT run well over 3 seconds ahead of 2nd place. POTY imo
Luke - picked up WRs on a few new tracks and massively improved some of his old ones. currently on a WR count that you’d think would be unheard of approaching 12 years since the game’s release
Ross - massively helped pioneer rSL and GV glitch optimisation, massive accomplishment getting the first magi 2/3 on rSL with a very strong run considering the circumstances
Bryce - lowering MC glitch down to undoubtedly of the strongest glitch times in the game, showed great perseverance to reclaim MG glitch
Sosis - very impressive optimisation on rSL ng and MMM placing him very far ahead of the rest of the top 10 on said tracks, alongside an rSGB WR at the very start of the year and a brief spell holding rDH ng

Justin Hitchcock:

Went from a beast to an absolute legend, dominating the AF charts, getting some great WRs (KC 2:17) and got 48/48 regionals in 2019. One of the best players in anything he touches, in my opinion the best player this year.

Luke Brown:

A very close second to Justin imo, a lot of people will put him as first, since people tend to care more about WRs. When Luke enjoys a track, he will push it to a level beyond what anyone has done before. He just seems to know what's the fastest strat for every single turn and strat just by looking at it, and is able to replicate it with relative ease.

Wilf Lovatt:

A bit of a controversial pick, but I wanted to highlight his process throughout the year here, and I think he deserves a mention due to how fast he's improved. He reached the absolute top on rDH glitch, all the while he was also pushing nearly every track down further and further without anyone really realizing. I always find myself seeing Wilf on the charts and wondering how his time is that good, considering his skill level just a year ago.

Ross Coleman:

Another unpopular one, but after Ross came back he has improved a ton and found his place playing all the stuff nobody else wants to play. Ross hasn't been afraid to spend tons of time into strategies nobody has properly pulled off, a trait that has earned him a bunch of WRs this year. He has also risen very high on the PP rankings, currently at 12th place. I think that should give him a nomination.

Sosis:

I think Sosis deserved a nomination, he has somehow got even more dominant on his tracks this year, not that he wasn't already above the rest in them. He's also put some effort on new tracks (rMR and KC come to mind first) and reached WW tops on them after some grinding. I think he's gotten a lot better from last year, and that's saying something on his level.

Honourable mentions:

Logan
Braixen
Vincent Nguyen
Bryce
David
Core
Indy Kambeitz (Weexy)

Since there's no Most Improved award, I put a lot emphasis on improvement. I think people who have pushed to become better should get the award, not the people who were already at a really high level and achieved relatively the same amount as they did last year. I still think Luke and Justin became a fuckton better this year, even though they were already insane in 2018.

Cheers

My nominations for POTY 2019 are as follows (in order):

Justin: 8 WRs across 4 unique tracks, American tops on EVERY track and category, glitch and no glitch. And dethroning Fox for site champ. He also now halved Fox's AF. Best accomplishment was 2:17 on KC.

Luke: 21 WRs across 8 unique courses. Highlights were beating Fox's rMC which had lasted 1400+ days and ending Infi's 6 1/2 year reign on DDR.

Sosis: 13 WRs on 4 unique courses. Really pushed down his rSL no glitch and MMM WRs.

Bryce: 14 WRs on 3 unique tracks. Very innovative with new glitches such as MC tas glitch and getting the first WR with the new rSL method. Biggest thing was beating Guy on MC after his nearly-5 year reign.

Ross: 6 WRs on 2 unique tracks. Ross has improved a lot this year, making it #12 on the PP. But obviously the big achievement for him, and for the tt community in general, was the magi 2/3 rSL glitch WR run he set in August. He later got WR runs on GV glitch making use of the tas entry with quacker which helped push that category down much more than it had been before.

Honorable mentions (not in any order): Cole (big LC improvements), Logan (16 WRs), Braixen (further optimizing CM glitch), David (rDH glitch WR and many other WW tops such as rGV2 no glitch ER), and Blaze (5 WRs). Also a shoutout to big Wilf Lovatt too due to his massive AF cut grind he went on in 2019 plus his good work on rDH sc. Definitely deserves a mention.
