Hi all, i'm new to these boards but not new to SMK.

I have recently got back into enjoying it again and have got my 5-lap time back down to 1'02 (i'm playing on an NTSC system). Although when I was playing this when it was originally released I was at 1'01. SO I am again at that plateau... I just need to master cutting inside of the pipe on the right hand 90 degree bend by the large sand area to get myself back down to 1'01.

My question is where is the next area of the track to start looking at changing my driving technique..? Now I am fully aware of the NBT and have read about how it is done, but is this the best thing to try and learn next or are there other techniques changes that its best to try first..?

I have seen Sami's WR videos and am blown away by how far the driving has come on this game... so would just love to be able to get my time to under the 1 minute mark.

Any help or guidance would be very much appreciated...

Hi and welcome!

If you are at 1'02" and aiming for 1'01" NTSC, even for sub minute I would stick to normal hop jumping around the corners to get the basic driving done. You will basically want to make sure you do the countersteer hop the moment the corners finish to straighten up quickly and keep on the shortest racing line. It will not be necessary to cut across the 4th corner with a jump or any boosts.

Please follow the Non-NBT No Pipe jump World Record route by Mr Ueda, this will help you get to 1'01" in no time and 1'00" very quickly.

By the way which system are you playing on? Original SNES or the Switch Online / Other? If you have an original SNES and an old CRT TV youl find the performance easier.

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply Sami.

I am always trying to get tighter to the corners so will work on that... I think the countersteer hop is where I am losing time, I hadn't ever analysed it, its something me and my friends naturally started doing back in 92/93, along with hop jumping round the corners but only ever really tried to perfect that more that the exit.

I will watch that video and hopefully that helps me bring the time down...

As for what i'm playing on... its a combination of original Super Famicom and Japanese cart on a Bang & Olufsen MX4200 in my games room, and depending if i'm in the lounge, my Super NT running the USA NTSC ROM. The Switch Online has some input lag and the start boost did not seem to work as the other do so wont be playing on that.

Right, so I've kinda become (somewhat) knowledgable on this category within the last month or so.

- You can save a frame or so on the very first turn, by holding R when you start and releasing it basically immediately upon zooming, allowing you to hop the first turn lap 1. This can be pushed a few pixels further by releasing B immediately upon zooming and pressing it again as you hop the corner.

- I find the easiest way to take 2nd turn is just 2 long drifts, though hopping is also fine. Try to stay as tight on the red/white stripes as you can. Try to kind of counter-steer and hop as you exit this corner, which will allow you to end it tightly and stay close to the road.

- 3rd corner, just get a tight drift around, and countersteer+hop right as you encounter the pipe at the red and white stripes (remember to always try and drive on these!). This straightens your line (remember, just look at a minimap drawing and imagine the shortest/most optimal line from corner to corner, then try to utilize such a line in the race).

- 4th corner, you want to enter this corner earlier than it may seem. Try to hug the red/white stripes, and perform a right facing hop, followed by a neutral hop slightly before the pipe. This straightens the kart and hugs the pipe, as well as aligning you good for the next (most difficult) turn.

- Final corner, you want to enter this one a little bit early. Start steering left before you begin to hop, and then hop onto the red/white stripes and just stay as tight as you can. It helps to perform a counter-steer right as you exit this, so you keep a tight line going into the next lap. Then just begin a drift about right when you cross the line, and cut as much of the next corner as you can.

All takes practice, but if you're determined, it will come (I was at 1'00"27 around a month ago, and scored a 59"74 earlier today; practice, practice, practice).

Thanks for breaking it down like that... much appreciated. I was actually just watching the video and trying to work out that sharp first turn and I just kept jumping instead of a hard turn so will give that a go now.

I am doing alot of that already, but as I said for me its now just getting a little tighter and performing the countersteer hop earlier than I was.

Thats fantastic times you have got... well done. I'm not too bother about sub 1 minute, just would be happy with 1'00"XX time as we never achieved that as kids. I'm 42 now so not sure my eyes and reactions are going to be up to it yet... lol
