I have only played the game on emulators so far so would any of you recommend the purchase of the physical game?

Yes definitely buy an original SNES if you would like to participate in Super Mario Kart here. Also it has many other great games and you may wish to get a few in future.

Ebay and other places will have what you need, you probably already found some options.
