WR of the Year 2018!
01/02/19 at 05:05:57

Hi folks, the yearly tradition of discussing what was the best WR of the past year is here to continue.  Cheesy
The question as always: what were the most extreme WRs driven within the previous year?
Too many options for a poll, so I will just list the new WRs driven in 2018. I encourage everyone to post their favourite option for PAL and NTSC, respectively.  Smiley

Eventhough the topic of last year did not select an official winner (there was no poll anymore), the general consensus seemed to be that the best PAL WR was 12"02 by ScouB and the NTSC one that got named most was my 45"99 on VL2.

So for full disclosure the winners in previous years:
2015: KB1 45"76 by Sportsguy001
2016: DP2 1'24"97 (incl. 16"77 WR flap) by KVD
2017: MC2 12"02 PAL by ScouB & VL2 45"99 NTSC by KVD

Anyway on to the topic at hand...by the looks of it this certainly underlines ScouB's powerful year, as he dominates the options for both systems:

PAL
GV2      11"76      ScouB
MC3      1'26"48      KVD
MC3      16"79      ScouB
VL1      09"51      Antistar
KB2      54"72      ScouB
KB2      10"25      ScouB

NTSC
DP1      1'07"57      ScouB
DP1      13"20      KVD
MC2      1'00"65      ScouB
CI1      50"81      Matt
CI1      09"79      KVD
DP2      1'22"30      ScouB
DP2      16"23      ScouB
MC3      1'22"75      ScouB
MC3      16"16      ScouB
CI2      1'02"44      ScouB
CI2      12"22      ScouB
VL1      09"21      ScouB
MC4      17"48      KVD
RR      1'23"63      KVD

I hope I didn't forget any. Good luck selecting! For me there are 2 clear winners, but I'll post my personal favourites a bit later.

I won't comment the MC3/MC4 part because I don't really get how impressive/hard those new strat WRs are. I would pick the following ones first:

PAL
KB2      10"25      ScouB

I have been some kind of KB2 master for ages and really thought my 10"31 was a very strong WR which would not be beaten easily, or by a very small margin just to hit a new barrier. ScouB destroyed it in a way which reminded me of my old CI1 10"55 with the old strat – winning more than 0"05 on the previous WR on a short race (10" lap). This deserves to be remembered and honored.

NTSC
MC2      1'00"65      ScouB

If I'm not wrong this is the first time MC2 went under the 1'01" barrier, and not just with a 1'00"98! Being consistent here is incredibly hard and ScouB just did it right, the video was super impressive, this might be one of the best 5-lap performances ever driven.

CI1      50"81      Matt

Not only because Matt. The CI1 "new strat" is harder to keep consistent than the previous one, and breaking new barriers there is extremely hard. This deserves to be mentioned, and I have to confess the fact it was driven by a player who's not used to drive WRs every week proves a high level of devotion behind the performance.

I'd vote Scoub's MC2 race as WR of the year though.

The feeling of being a world champion is intoxicating, and I didn't want to ever not be the world champion again. Then I realized it didn't matter that much since I had nothing more to prove and achieved my most important goal(s).

For PAL there is a very clear winner for me...it's KB2 flap 10"25. I pretty much agree 100% with what Antistar already wrote above. Also, just look at the freaking replay of the lap, it couldn't be any sicker.  Smiley

PAL
KB2      10"25      ScouB

For NTSC it is a bit tougher. I think DP1 and MC2 5-laps are valid options and MC3 flap went waaay lower than all of us thought possible I am sure. For my part, my CI1 flap broke a nice mini barrier and is setting pretty close to the max now (as far as I can tell). That said, for me the MC3 5-lap of 1'22"75 takes the cake. The strategy on MC3 got a massive overhaul and it's a feast of advanced techniques now. Basically, it's the very incarnation of modern SMK. There is the pipehit boost, which certainly got optimized, coming out with the right angles and momentum. There is the wall-bounce in the hairpin to make that corner sharper. Then there are two pipejumps insta followed by boost building, one completely new in the beginning of the lap that wasn't even used in Non-NBT. Now multiply that strategy, times five, without missing a beat.  Smiley And into the 1'22s moreover...we were going into 2018 with the WR being in the 1'24s...I don't think this is the most maxed of the records done, but it certainly is the most revolutionary one.

NTSC
MC3      1'22"75     ScouB

I'm pretty much in agreement with Karel on the KB2 flap and MC3 5lap. But gotta give a special nod to CI2 flap

PAL is very difficult as they are all good and each have their strengths. Most likely KB2 lap followed by KB2 course by Scoub.

For NTSC definitely MC3 5-lap by Scoub as it is still one of the longer tracks in the game and required so many pipe boosts, pipe jumps and the wall bumps to be executed smoothly for all of the 5-laps.

PAL
I think both MC3 are far from being maxed (they are shitty compared to what we have done in ntsc), so they are out. Its between the remaining 4. But I think my KB2 flap edges out a little indeed

NTSC
It's a lot harder to pick one there. RR and MC2 are not really WRs so I'm not counting them. For me it's between the CI1 DP1 and MC3 ones.
MC3 being the most revolutionary, CI1 the most pushed and DP1 the most impressive ?
It depends on what we want to reward.
But even if it's far from being maxed, I'd go with MC3 5laps as well more for the strat development during the year than for the time itself.

And between both Id go with PAL KB2 flap prolly.

I definitely don't have the experience to provide a decent answer on this... but MC3 was broken this year because of pipe boosting. Who discovered that? Was it scoub or KVD? Whoever holds WRs for that track should get world record of the year for PAL or NTSC

Pipeboost on MC3 was first used by Marisa or Chris Wild. One of those two, I'm not entirely sure. I'd give ScouB most of the credit for the way that MC3 is played now though.

KB2 flap for sure on PAL.  Was last years WR ever decided?
To address the MC3 pipeboost, I find it much easier than the the wall hit afterwards.  A 16.61 without  it is ridiculously impressive.  Mario you could sub 16.25 and beyond very quickly.  You are meeting the pipe at the angle about the time the boost is ready for release.  After the pipe hit hold the gas until you are almost back on the road.  These mechanics deserve a write up on the players page since its been allowed for over a year.

Yeah Marisa discovered pipe boosts around 2007, but Chris Wild was discovering the wall bumping, that was on MC4 lap first? Absolutely Julien has taken the strategy very far and the limits are crazy. Definitely would be good to see how low the PAL one can go this year.

No, I did the wall bumps on MC4 first (and on MC3/MC2 too)
Chris Wild just tied the MC3 flap WR with Marisa's pipeboosting

Oh ok, yeah definitely the MC2 and 3 wall bumps you did first. I just thought the MC4 one might have been Wild's on MC4 only cos I remember him getting WRs on the track. Maybe he tried it shortly after at the time.

How long has the MC4 wallboost been around, must be many, many years now? I know I used it in one of my 2012 pr's and was told others had used it too then.

Well I didnt really say I "invented" or "discovered" it but I was the first to capitalize the fact it wins time and to wr with this.
It's like pipeboosting, I'm pretty sure someone did it before Marisa without really proving it wins time or without doing it on purpose.

Agreed on both, from what I read from Marisa he was the first one to test and I think discover it but yes it is very possible others may have stumbled on the pipe boost leading to his testing. It would be a long time ago. And certainly you've really gone far as it has been pushes a few seconds further already.  Smiley
