NTSC Championships

Hello everyone, we are planning for an NTSC championship sometime in March in Monroe Louisiana.
We plan to eventually move it to a more desirable place, but for now it makes the most sense financially.
We have not hammered out registration cost, but we are thinking 25-50 US dollars.
We wanted to have an idea of who all would like to participate.

Thanks - Kartel group.

Dates of Tournament:

2 Full Days - Saturday 16th March 2019 and Sunday 17th March 2019

Players are generally aiming to travel to Monroe on Thursday / Friday just before and depart on the Monday onwards.

Confirmed Attendees:

Matt Ballard   (Louisiana, USA)
Eric Olden   (Louisiana, USA)
Kyle Randol   (Louisiana, USA)
Joe Bernier   (Colorado, USA)
Drew Blumfield   (California, USA)
Andrew Koltz   (Mississippi, USA)
Nathan Stinson  (Oklahoma, USA)
Austin Perroux  (Oklahoma, USA)
Chris Clark   (Hertfordshire, UK)
Leyla Hasso   (London, UK)
Sami Cetin   (London, UK)
Karel van Duijvenboden   (Alphen aan den Rijn, Netherlands)
Martin van Haasteren   (Utrecht, Netherlands)

Well this is good news indeed! It does remain to be seen how it pans out of course, but I certainly hope this could be start of something great  Cool
I have been trying to get in touch with the Kartel for nearly 14 days now, but somehow I keep failing. The only info I have so far is that I could potentially blame Ballhards job.
Anyway, please do hit us up on discord if you want planning ideas, general help, anecdotal experience and crazy stuff that'll make this a global phenomenon, or not, withing the next couple of years  Smiley

I think we could fit it in over a weekend for sure Mario.  Kyle wanted us to make a serious push for this, and I'm 100% behind the idea, as is Matt.  I'll be honest none of us have any experience planning anything like this, and outside help is more than welcome to point the event in the right direction.  As I stated we were thinking March, but if April or May is a better time especially for those that would come outside the country, that would be fine.

Sargoth I will tell Matt to contact you, any organizing/planning advice is more than welcome.  Contacting Nintendo of America is worth a shot as well.

The one question on my mind right now is whether this will be an NTSC open Championship or NTSC natives only?  Grin

We certainly want the best players in the world to come! It would be interesting to see the dynamics of the action on an unbroken version of  the game,  Grin.  The first thing we have to figure out is the most convenient time to hold the event. We already have a couple of venues in mind. A vote in the near future can be held to determine that.
Hopefully we can get Fenner, and/or Harvey to come, that will seal the deal.

Except for the DP1, 2 and 3 water shroom wall skips that I just remembered amongst the other cornering issues. On a positive note the Battle Mode will be interesting as the PAL version is actually worse. NTSC will be more: if you are getting hit with an item, you are definitely getting hit with an item. if Drew is able to attend that would be key. I know he will be very busy but might be a chance to get other USA players too.

I suppose getting a first edition started will be good then it could become a regular thing for future years. Much appreciated for looking to set this up. If it gets going I will help to promote it.

As per Clark and Guillaume, if I can make it I would like to try. Please keep us posted on any further updates Smiley

Yeah definitely keep us all posted, could be the start of a great event series!

Also, eventhough NTSC is in many respects my favourite version of the game, NTSC GP150cc is unfortunately quite broken in 2 player. Whenever both drivers are close and there are CPUs around the game starts lagging like hell, making it quite unsuitable for the highest level of competition. It pains me to say it, but it's true. It's by far my biggest gripe with NTSC. The DP shrooms are fine, never mind those, just learn to do the moves.  Cheesy

Actually that's another thing I forgot aswell about NTSC. We were having that problem on nearly every round when we raced vs Takashi years ago at CDM remember? Well I guess like with the DP water stuff we just need to get used to it. It will be important to have a USA based NTSC Championship as it will be a great experience and hopefully get more players to attend there. Even if it isn't on the first edition, I am sure it could grow for future years!

I'm very excited to see the interest so far guys! The biggest plus about ntsc gp is losing speed is not as crucial. The broken reference was a joking suttle stab at Moll.  Wink
I haven't heard from the rest of our group for further input.  Kyle, and Ben are currently at Yellowstone looking for a buried treasure left by an old man for others to find, sounds like the plot to goonies. It's Fenn's treasure for those that are interested in looking into it.

And the KBs and VL2 are so much harder on PAL when you clip the water and it drives sooooo slow..... there is a solution though. Just don't clip the deep water. A bit like just learn the mushroom water wall boosts on DPs on NTSC, and then all is ok.

Bottom line, just dont crash on either version, ever. Dodge every item thrown at you. Don't miss any NTSC shortcuts. Then acceleration is not an issue.

#BothPALandNTSCSolved

Anyway, looking forward to hearing news. It will be great to see you guys, meet more players in USA and have fun most of all!

We are laughing... me too. But it's true. The solution stared us in the face since day 1. I know NTSC has infinite problems and my KB1 session last night was an example of that (water clipping on NTSC, not even PAL this time which Mike had to sit through watching) but I will enjoy it nevertheless when we have an NTSC Championship in the US. It's gonna be fun and nice to see players who couldn't make it to a CDM in Europe finally get to enjoy the competition in USA.

In.

Been wanting something like this to happen for many, many years. I'll help in any way I can, although Colorado and Louisiana aren't exactly neighbors...

Thanks for getting the ball rolling! This sounds like it could be a very exciting event if we can get a solid group of Europeans/non-US players to also attend!

You're probably as likely to see Steven Zwartjes there are you are to see me. While I can't 100% guarantee I'll be a no-show, you can put me down as "highly questionable". A lot can happen in six months, though. We'll just have to wait.

As for the NTSC vs. PAL debate, I'm more and more beginning to prefer PAL. PAL feels more purist for me-- I feel that the greater speed loss from touching water on VL2, KB1, etc. rewards players who can stay on the track and drive it properly, and punishes those who can't. NTSC feels cheap at times with its leniency on water hits, and it does less to make sure that players learn to drive the tracks properly. Basically, Sami's advice of "drive better" is about as accurate as can be.

Also, because it's so much harder to make platform jumps on GV1 and especially GV2, it's far more satisfying and rewarding to pull them off, while on NTSC it kind of becomes routine to do 5/5 runs on GV1 when you've mastered the zigzag boosts. On PAL, attempting multiple PJs in a GV1 5lap run gets more and more thrilling as you add additional jump attempts, and few can do a 5/5 even with the help of boosts. When you've got 3/5 and a likely PR from that, it's highly tempting to go for that 4/5 yet you know how big of a gamble it is. But the charts will reward you immensely if you do have some balls, go for that jump, and nail it.

In a nutshell, PAL's more challenging, less forgiving time trialing better separates the men from the boys than NTSC's does, I would say.

I sometimes wonder if Nintendo redid PAL in attempt to balance the game more and make the more advanced moves-- like GV1 platform jumps or VL2 island jumps-- more of the high risk, high reward type affair that they probably intended those to be. Assuming that back in 1992, Nintendo even knew we would be pulling those maneuvers in time trials.

Just to support the lag issue I wrote about earlier, I now have a pretty shocking example to show from a session with Lafungo and me that took place yesterday.
Check it out:

Honestly, I don't think it would be a huge deal during an NTSC championships as it doesn't happen all the time and one could adjust to it and think of it only as a minor annoyance. This one was particularly bad though, the heaviest one I've experienced. Notice the in-game timer freezes for like a second or so. Also, this is regular offline SMK, not ZSNES shenanigans.  Lips Sealed

This will obviously happen during the NTSC GP semifinals when you're facing Joe, but only on your part of the screen, for two complete seconds, and when it's over and your character "wakes up" he will be on a Yoshi's egg you could not see you were actually driving on.
