Vote for Nathan Stinson!
06/11/18 at 21:42:48

Hey everyone, I'm here to share some fun facts about Nathan Stinson and try to convince you to vote for him.  I've got nothing against Antistar, I just really think Nate deserves a lot of votes in this contest for being an amazing community member for so long. Being seeded #64 from the group phase certainly didn't help his situation, but at least he got this far.

Nate at the 2012 Mexico-Brazil friendly at Cowboys Stadium.

Community Bio

Nate's been a forum member since 2004 but a member of the online kart scene since 1999.  He is one of only ten karters to participate in all eight editions of the Karter Contest.  His highest finish was a top 16 loss in 2004, and since 2008 he's failed to get into the top 32.

Nate has amassed over 4000 posts in his 5000+ day message board career.  He's started loads of awesome topics to share great stories and coordinate events.  He's participated in numerous forum activities and real life meetups.

You've probably played against Nate if you ever joined a sports prediction contest on these boards.  Nate's also often keeping the yearly Virginia meet topic updated with the latest info.  He even puts in extra effort to connect with Karters who aren't active on the forums to invite them to the meet.

Nate's message board posts are always very enthusiastic, friendly, and full of great information.  He's fun to chat with as well!  Nate was formerly a Kart IRC mainstay and is still active on Discord today.  So make sure to stay in touch with him on Discord or add him on Snapchat.

Nate Reddits all the time and he even created r/mariokart which has over 23,000 members.  Join up if you haven't already!

Time Trials

Nate's maybe not quite at Antistar's SMK level in any single kart game in Time Trials, but on the combined ranks, he's right up there at #75, just two places behind Antistar (#73), with times pages submitted for the each of the first seven Mario Kart games.  Nate's probably best known as an MK64 player, but he's also ranked #75 in SMK.

Multiplayer

For the last 12 years, Nate has participated in the biggest MK64 multiplayer tournament in North America each summer.  After debuting at the 2006 St. Louis meet (3rd place!), Nate has been in the Virginia meet field every year from 2007 to 2017.  He's got one championship, two 2nds, four 4ths, two 5ths, an 8th, and an 11th on his VA record.  That's incredible! Eight of 12 years he's been in the top 4.  So consistent!

I even managed to face Nate in online MK64 multiplayer way back in 2007. Here's the video!  (I'm pretty sure Nate is one of those players....)

Other Games

There's a good reason why Nate's not in the top 50 of MK64 anymore...he's too busy playing other games! Nate's a video gamer all the way through. He's always playing games....console, PC, handheld, mobile. Games are a huge part of Nate's life.  Nate tries to make it to QuakeCon every year, as long as it doesn't interfere with his Virginia schedule.

Nate is very active on Steam. Add him (nstinson) if you haven't already.  He's got over 700 games! Lately he can be found playing PUBG, Overwatch, Rocket League, CS:Source, Call of Duty, TF2, Left 4 Dead, and CS:GO.

If you like PUBG, here's a great video of Nate participating in a wonderful Squad Mode win along with wheat, Thiefmaker, and me.

Beyond Gaming

Nate is one of the nicest, most selfless people I know.

When he's not gaming with his online buddies, Nate's constantly out and about, often doing great things with his family.  One weekend he'll be heading out for an Oklahoma City Thunder game and the next he'll be having a good time playing games or hanging out with his nephews or other relatives.

He's always there to support friends and family at any sporting events, music recitals, or other great things they are in.  Nate also really goes the extra mile to help out his mother whenever needed.

All these non-gaming things come BEFORE gaming.

Every.

Single.

Time.

Even though gaming is a huge part of Nate's life, it definitely always comes second to his family and friends.

And that's how it should be.

Vote for Nate!

That's the first time I've ever seen a picture of David Wonn, I've known him since 1999 but never knew what he looked like... until tonight.

Also, Kevin Booth must be pretty tall? (I know Stinson is 5'9", he told me once before, so Booth looks like he's at least 6'3" in that pic)

I've known Stinson since my N64HS days. I've probably had IM converstaions with him as far back as 2000.

You're not the only one who went years without knowing what Wonn looked like.

Here's Patricio's surprise after these photos were originally posted in 2006.

Several other photos of Wonn from various Virginia meets can be found at http://vameet.speedrunwiki.com

Here's Wonn in his classic Donkey Kong Country t-shirt, pretending to grab former forum moderator, PYLemire!

I don't like where this starts, but I appreciate the positive effort for Nathan. He definitely doesn't look like the kind of opponent I'd be disappointed to lost against. Even if I don't want this to happen though.

He would get my vote in many other matches! Good luck Nathan anyway. Smiley

I'll be sharing some more fun facts about Nate throughout the day to keep things rolling!

For all you (non-American) football fans out there, Nate's been a big fan for years. As you can see in the photo above, he went to great lengths to make it to an international match played in the USA a few years back.

A soccer fan from Oklahoma?? Yep, it's true!

I know this is weird but Nathan Stinson reminds me Nicholas Harvey in some ways, not only because of this^ and I have that feeling since long, this is nothing new, but am I the only one?

At least they are really different about gaming and stuff, good point for Nathan and his 700+ games on Steam Smiley

Thanks for the pictures IsThatAGoodTime-- Quality Thread!! Smiley

Well..., I think the time has come to post my chrono--logical 'instant herpes' message in my thread*-- not for campaigning ('cause I'm out) but just to remind you all what could happen very, very soon... if you vote for Nathan Stinson, remember Roll Eyes Grin

If you do NOT wish to be nominated for the Karter Contest, or wish to be removed from the contest once matches have begun, send me a Personal Message here on this forum, or send me a direct message over Discord, requesting your removal.

When I saw this quote in the Karter Contest Rules and Guidelines topic, I was instantly taken back ten years to the 2008 Karter Contest where Nate was....not happy.  It was just not a good time for him and some things weren't going well.

I'm sharing this mostly to show that the community here can be awesome and supportive and help anyone out when they are not having a good day/week/month/life.

Nate might come off a bit unpleasant in some of these messages but to me it really shows how we can get our friends through the sad days and back to all smiles if we don't just abandon them.

The contest was ramping up and people started picking on Nate a little bit around here.  Mostly a "too nice for his own good" type situation.  He was pressured into making a topic in the KC2k8 campaign section and then people kinda trashed him and his topic a bit. It left him really upset and his emotions got the better of him for a few days.

He asked to be removed from the contest, but the contest mods were having NONE of that!  Nate suggested they put in Karina or JC Morales (if you don't know, don't be afraid to ask...) instead of him.  When that didn't work, he started anti-campaigning for himself.  He still managed a whopping 43 votes in the following round, but back in that time there were well over 100 voters per match and it just wasn't enough to carry him through.

I saved the IRC logs from the day most of this happened, and it was a great blast from the past to review it.  It's way too long (1,000 lines in just 7 hours!) to post in full, but I'll paste in some choice quotes that no one will be too offended to see posted publicly.

The cast of characters is a real Who's Who of the Karting World in 2008:

Quote:
Michael Fried, eventual 2k8 Contest Champion
Etch
Honko
Duff (djimon_honsou)
Jonesy
ALAKTORN
Matt Tanzer
Degausser
kles
karterfreak
brutus (jfk)
Tanney
ChanServ
IsThatAGoodThing
(....and shadow was asleep but always watching)

Do you remember chatting with any of these people? Share your favorite memories if you do!

It all started off with some playful ribbing from Duff. Nate's so annoyed he can't seem to get his name out of the next matchup:

Quote:
[19:36:49]      <djimon_honsou>      stinson a lot of people are picking u to go out in the first round
[19:42:05]      <nstinson>      I am asking out of the contest
[19:42:08]      <nstinson>      i don't want to be involved
[19:42:11]      <nstinson>      I've told them many times

Honko was one of the contest operators that year, and a decision had already been made between Honko, Jones, and others that Nate would be left in, regardless of his temporary sour mood.  He had already passed through an initial voting stage with over 30 votes, it would be crazy to take out such a strong competitor.  That may or may not have been the right decision, but it had already been made by this point.

Quote:
[00:37:37]      <nstinson>      robin! just switch me for karina!
[00:37:42]      <IsThatNotAGoodThing>      Stinson you know you want to vote
[00:37:43]      <nstinson>      heck, switch me for JC Morales
[00:37:59]      <nstinson>      I'm not going to vote
[00:38:01]      <IsThatNotAGoodThing>      you are IN it to WIN it
[00:38:05]      <nstinson>      I'm not
[00:38:08]      <nstinson>      I don't want to be
[00:38:15]      <IsThatNotAGoodThing>      why not
[00:38:20]      <IsThatNotAGoodThing>      you are a valuable member of kart
[00:38:33]      <IsThatNotAGoodThing>      You set up the kart meets
[00:38:38]      <IsThatNotAGoodThing>      You play many kart of MK64
[00:38:41]      <IsThatNotAGoodThing>      You are a chat force
[00:38:42]      <nstinson>      which no one attends
[00:38:49]      <nstinson>      or cares about even
[00:38:52]      <nstinson>      and i don't do anything else
[00:38:58]      <nstinson>      plus I told you I quit the kart meet business

Don't worry, anyone. Nate didn't actually quit the kart meet business. He went on to pump a ton of energy into coordinating the Virignia meets for the next several years. His personal invitations resulted in some of the most interesting guests that no one else knew.

Jones showed up a bit later on. He saw what was going on and was totally unafraid to step in and do his best to help Nate out.

Quote:
[02:08:40]      <MarkJones>      it's about the community
[02:08:47]      <MarkJones>      and giving people a chance to get more involved
[02:08:48]      <nstinson>      of course, its just late, so I'll be out of my depression tomorrow, and be happier
[02:08:51]      <nstinson>      and won't be so adament
[02:08:55]      <nstinson>      but, that's tomorrow
[02:09:18]      <nstinson>      the results don't bother me, it's the people who always nag on me everytime I post anywhere on the forums
[02:09:28]      <MarkJones>      why do you let it bother you?
[02:09:40]      <nstinson>      because I am a small man
[02:09:52]      <nstinson>      and I let things bother me
[02:09:59]      <nstinson>      I'm a girl who's on her period. muahahahaaaaaa
[02:10:09]      <nstinson>      since that seems to be the one I've heard 4 times now
[02:10:32]      <MarkJones>      well, if you stop giving people fodder for personal attacks then they will stop
[02:10:45]      <MarkJones>      you think I let it bother me when Billy says something about me?
[02:10:56]      <nstinson>      nope
[02:10:59]      <MarkJones>      you think I care what some 15 year old kid from England thinks about me?
[02:11:05]      <nstinson>      because you're a bigger man than I am
[02:11:10]      <MarkJones>      no i'm not
[02:11:14]      <MarkJones>      we're all the same
[02:11:27]      <nstinson>      yes, you are
[02:11:28]      <MarkJones>      everyone has choices to make
[02:11:30]      <nstinson>      you don't let things bother you, I do
[02:11:34]      <MarkJones>      it's all about attitude and choice
[02:11:47]      <nstinson>      and I choose to have a bad attitude about it
[02:11:55]      <MarkJones>      i'm not more mature
[02:12:01]      <MarkJones>      i just choose to not let it bother me
[02:12:07]      <nstinson>      and I choose to let it
[02:12:20]      <nstinson>      its a good release for the suck that is my life
[02:12:21]      <MarkJones>      just work on choosing the other thing

Vote for Nate! Let's get those 2008 votes that he missed out on.  Can he earn at least 43 votes again this time?
