RCA (AV) tô HDMI converter
12/12/17 at 03:38:26

Hey there

Has anyone ever used one of these? My plan is to plug my SNES to a low ms monitor using the HDMI port. My biggest fear is the input lag generated by the conversion will be too high to handle. Any experiences/thoughts on the matter?

An answer was given by Fabrice:

2) even without any modding just by using an HDMI to composite/scart converter
Ha! I have bought such a converter to play my PAL SNES on my NTSC TV: 1) image looks somewhat distorted if I recall correctly and 2) it introduces a sizable lag that makes the game unplayable Sad

I don't know if other converters have the same problem.

I have no doubt in saying this is an accurate answer, but his distortion problem was mainly due to: RCA (AV Scart) of his PAL SNES to HDMI converter on his NTSC TV.
If you go: RCA (AV) of your NTSC SNES to HDMI converter on your NTSC TV-- this will avoid distortion but maybe not lag.

Patrick Wessels also uses these afaik.
Drop him a Facebook PM for details. He also has some lag (in any case too much for SMK top performances).

Thanks Chrono.
Indeed the lag induced by my adaptor makes the game too laggy to even enjoy the game, let alone be competitive, even at my modest level.

The other idea I had but didn't test was to buy a TV card to plug the SNES in. Then of course the TV card is connected to your monitor through the computer on which it is installed. You just need to make sure the TV card has an RCA input, but I think most do.  Of course you would have to buy an NTSC TV card.

A somewhat related question: according to my friend: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PAL Brazil has the PAL system. However we know that our Brazilian SMK friends all play the NTSC version of the game. Why is that?

For low lag you would be best trying an RGB connection to an OSSC converter to the monitor hdmi.

From what people have told me OSSC is very good (others use it to play top level at other retro games on a monitor). Though it's expensive. https://www.videogameperfection.com/2016/07/08/source-converter-verdict/

Cheap av-hdmi converters are generally far too laggy to play at a decent level.

Thanks everyone for the answers. I'm trying to make my setup "simpler" but seems like the converter will just ruin it instead

I have absolutely no clue why they would list Brazil as PAL.  Huh

As far as I can tell from reading the relevant section of that wiki page, Brazil uses a system called PAL-M which uses the PAL colour encoding system but is essentially NTSC-like in that it runs at 60Hz and uses 525 scanlines. That's probably where the confusion is coming from here - PAL does not necessarily mean 625/50.

But it's still PAL encoding... And the consoles are NTSC.. so do most TVs support NTSC as well, hence Nintendo's choice to use the american consoles? Btw Firewaster, are they the squarish type just like US/Canada?

Other somewhat related question: Argentina seems to be in the same situation: listed as PAL, but NTSC Super Nintendos.

Why are there so few Argentinian players?
