I love my Pringles but I need a true opinion expressed by the American people-- should I avoid these chips? Sad

I ate Pringles chips today with my sandwiches. I had the Loud Salsa flavor. It was really good and complemented my sandwiches well. I don't care what anybody says about Pringles chips, I'll still eat them, though I usually only eat them when I have sandwiches (which is not that often).

I just discovered paella tonight. I bought a 24-oz. box from the freezer section at Wal-Mart because it looked great-- it had rice, vegetables, and best of all, shrimp, oysters, and scallops! I cooked the whole box on the stove and it came out great! Ate every single bite! I didn't think I'd enjoy a Spanish dish this much. Maybe there's a lot of great European foods I have yet to discover. To be honest I've never really thought of Europe as a place with great food, preferring the spicier Southern American, Mexican, and Asian cuisines, but this paella was a nice surprise. It helps that the dish is quite popular with the Japanese due to its composition of rice and seafood.

Only downside was the price, about $9 for a pound-and-a-half of food, though that's probably no more than what I'd pay for the same amount at a Spanish restaurant.

If you like paella enough, it's actually quite cheap to make on your own (the primary cost is obviously whatever proteins you want to put in it - the rice and veggies are essentially negligible in comparison). It's definitely worthwhile for how many meals you can cook at once if you make a big enough batch! If I can't find good enough seafood prices, I've done it with chicken and chorizo and it still turned out great.

Found a pork shoulder on sale for $0.99/lb over the weekend, made a big batch of pulled pork that I'm still working through Smiley

Not sure who else here is into beer, but also brewed a saison while the pork was in the smoker - hopefully it turns out alright, gonna add some peaches when I transfer to secondary this weekend and try to have a light, refreshing beer ready for the warmer weather soon to come Smiley

You make me wanna cook my own paella now, that's one of my favourite (among probably 50+) meals. I really love it and I think a home-made one could be very cool.

@Nick: yes, Europe has great food, especially among the Mediterranean countries (France of course, Spain, Italy, Greece), just like northern African countries, i.e Maghreb.

Oh yeah, almost forgot about Greek food. My shopping mall used to have a Greek-Mediterranean place in its food court and I'd sometimes go there and get a lamb shawarma, a falafel gyro, and a Greek salad. I love how they put olives, feta cheese, and different dressing in the Greek salad. The shawarma and falafel are probably Middle Eastern/North African inventions, but they're still great.

As for Italian, I've always heard that their pizza and spaghetti are different from the way it's usually made in America. I'm just not much into most pasta dishes, except my mother's homemade spaghetti, Chef Boyardee spaghetti, and lasagna (which is probably good in Italy). I'd get tired of pasta dishes all the time, I know Italy has other good food, including seafood. And, of course, McDonald's.

As far as Middle Eastern food goes, I've had couscous a few times. I guess it's kind of like oatmeal...

I think most people would consider North Africa to be part of the Middle East, since it has the Arabic language, lots of desert, Muslims, terrorists, etc. Of course it's going to have historical and geographical differences from the Arabian Peninsula, but culturally, North Africa is much, much more like the Arabian Peninsula than Sub-Saharan Africa. It's probably poorer than most of the Arabian Peninsula, though, because I don't think North Africa has oil reserves, at least not like Arabia does, but the Maghreb countries are probably at least a little better off than their neighbors to the south. (Yemen is the one country in Arabia that could really be considered "poor"...)

Try it sometime! When I'm feeling lazy, I do a lazy version that only takes about 30 minutes to make - obviously to make a proper one would take more time, but sometimes that time isn't available lol.

Not sure how you've been eating it, but the texture of couscous is absolutely nothing like oatmeal - it should be much more granular, whereas oatmeal (when cooked) is...well, mealy.

I think we Americans always picture the rest of the world incorrectly, because we see so little of it depicted accurately in our media. I love browsing the Internet to find pictures of foreign countries that look very different from the way we usually picture them. I can't help but still picture Morocco as being nothing but scorching, barren desert where bearded, brown-skinned men in white robes ride around on camels and shop at bazaars, but here's a picture of the ski resort town of Ifrane. I'm probably not the only one who hears "Syria" and immediately imagines a war zone in a barren desert with missiles and bombs flying everywhere, and burned-out buildings. But Wikipedia has this picture from the Homs region...

P.S. Here's another favorite of mine. This picture was taken in... wait for it... Oman.

Back on the topic of food. I decided I'd "Live Más" today since I hadn't done so in a while. So I got the Taco 12-Pack with a large Mountain Dew Baja Blast. Ate the whole dozen tacos to the last bite and could've had at least two more. Often I struggle to finish ten. But when I eat all twelve it always seems to be with room to spare. I'm not sure why my appetite works that way...

(Taco Bell's "large" drink size isn't big enough, IMO, it's Whataburger that knows how to make a large drink! Since I ate at home, I couldn't just get a "free refill". If other countries think the U.S. sodas are big, I guess I'd need at least three refills if I was eating abroad, hehe. But anything less than a liter has no right to be called "large" if you ask me.)

Well that's a matter of perception and depends on your body size/shape too. This said, American people are taught large drinks are 1L, so when they come to Europe they face a big surprise. That reminds me Drew coming to a French KFC after CDM in 2011, getting his order with a 0.5L drink and protesting like "I asked for a large drink" Smiley

^ Fixed.

I don't think body size has as much to do with it, as I'm not exactly André the Giant (I'm actually fairly small for a man, and people who see me are surprised that I weigh as much as I do-- I certainly don't look like someone who's a shade over 100 kg, nor do I feel like I weigh that much), but what we are surrounded by and therefore conditioned to consider normal. If you grew up in Yuma, Arizona where my cousin lives, you'd think 45°C was a normal summer day.

...Of course, if I was in France and they gave me a too-small drink, I'd just ask them for un deuxičme  Wink (or maybe even un troisičme)
They'd charge me a few extra Euros, but what the heck. If I can afford to come to France, surely I can afford to buy an extra Coke or two. Ultimately it's just a First World problem, because we could be somewhere in Africa, walking down to the crocodile-infested river, wooden bucket in hand, if we wanted something extra to wash our food down with.  Cool

I decided to go Greek today and get the Traditional Greek Gyro and Super Greek Salad from Arby's, which is offering the items for a limited time. I also got a Turkey Club sandwich, a large order of fries, and a large drink (which, of course, wasn't enough, as usual). It was a great meal, the Tzatziki cucumber dressing was really good on the salad (which had lamb meat in it-- not baa-a-a-a-ad!), the gyro was great and the turkey sandwich was just to make sure I got full. And I did (and didn't quite finish the meal). I can now say, I HAVE THE MEATS!!!  Smiley

Just bottled my peach saison yesterday, got a little over 4.5 gallons out of the batch so I'm pretty pleased with it. Tasted nice too, now just have to wait until it's carbonated and I'll have a nice refreshing beer stocked up to get through some of the warmer days.

For some reason, I'd never made deviled eggs before last week...I had no idea how easy it was, and damn they make for a tasty snack! Might have to make another batch soon, or at least whenever I've got company over since it would be really easy to scale up and make a large quantity (the only reason I even bothered making them was to use up some mayo I made last week).

My wife made Peking duck and steamed buns yesterday, turned out great - I love the flavor of duck, but we rarely cook it whole, just occasionally get some breasts and cook those. Gonna freeze the carcass and make some sort of duck-based soup someday!

I went to a Honduran restaurant right down the road from where I live, and now I wish I hadn't. I paid over $20 for some rather crappy food that didn't really fill me. I did however get to practice my Spanish with the lady who took my order. Since there was a Hispanic-oriented market two doors down, after ordering I told her, "Cuando espero por mi comida, busco en la Tienda Latina", pointing my finger in the direction of it because I couldn't say "next door" or even "over there". Neither could I tell her that I'd be back shortly. Yet she compliments my Spanish skills wondering how I learned to speak the language so well, despite me clearly sucking at it. (and this isn't the first time a Latin American has said this to me)

I don't know if she was just trying to flatter me, or if most of us "gringos" are much, much worse at Spanish than me. It's not like you have to be a super-genius to learn enough Spanish or French to "just get by". These are certainly two of the easiest foreign languages for a native English speaker to learn. I think any worldly, educated person should have basic conversational ability in three languages at the very least, if not be somewhat fluent. There is much more to this world than the United States and the English language. Only about 5% of the world's population lives in the U.S. so for every American in the world, there are at least 19 people from somewhere else, and the world's Spanish-speaking population equals (if not exceeds) the total of English speakers.

There was a TV in the Honduran restaurant that was on Univisión, an American Spanish-language television network. I wish I had some Spanish channels on my TV, as it'd give me a lot of opportunity to work on my listening skills as well as important vocabulary. However, my cable package doesn't have it, and the only Spanish-language program I've ever been able to watch was Plaza Sésamo, which is of course the Mexican version of Sesame Street (itself a very good tool for learning Spanish as a second or third language)

P.S. Had a small bowl of some Indian dish last night. Indian food to me is so-so (as they say in old Wendy's ads... where's the beef?) but I do eat it from time to time as something "exotic".

Nick what if I told you... I really need to check your entrails and read in your future dreams Grin

I went to Arby's again today because I had to have THE MEATS!  Cool

They have a new "triple decker" sandwich, which I got with the Greek gyro (they told me they don't make the Greek salad anymore). With the large curly fries, it turned out to be a bigger meal than I could finish, which is a good value for $15.

And, of course, "J'ai demandé pour un grand boisson"! (I suppose I could make that my French catchphrase?)

I Lived Más today and got an XXL Grilled Stuft beef burrito with seven crunchy tacos. And un grand boisson Smiley It was Mountain Dew Baja Blast, of course.

I normally don't get fast food takeout two days straight but my family and I were late getting back into town after we bought our lottery tickets for this month and my mother wanted to do some shopping around Slidell.

Ate every bite and drank every drop, by the way, I was hungry. I'm sure I'll finally have a home-cooked meal tomorrow since it's Sunday!

I've been having diarrhea this evening but I will not be so quick to blame Taco Bell.

Nick quite frankly I'm appalled.  A true nationalist patriot would know that English is the superior language.  As the predominant language of the United States of America, a real populist would know that there's no reason to waste valuable time learning the minority languages of the country.  Only a fake Trumpian would cast consternation on those who are smart enough to put their free time to better use. Are you really just a Globalist masquerading around here trying to portray a Southern stereotype?  Shame!

If you want beef or chicken tacos, the easiest way to get good taco meat at home is to go with shredded meat in some kind of sauce that you like. For beef, I'd recommend going with a cut like chuck eye roast, then cooking it slowly for a couple of hours until it becomes really tender, then shredding it. If you start with too lean of a cut, the shredded beef will be really tough and fibrous. For chicken, it's easiest to go with boneless skinless breasts, cooked in a marinade of your choosing (feel free to experiment, I've even used orange juice as the base for a marinade, maybe that appeals to you Grin) until done, then shred. No matter which protein you choose, go with corn tortillas - there's pretty much never a good reason to go with flour tortillas for tacos, corn tortillas give much better flavor and texture. As for toppings, that's entirely up to your preference - salsa, sour cream, cole slaw, guacamole, cilantro...all are popular options, just depends what you like.

Let us know if you end making some tacos! Smiley

If you ask me, a chicken taco ain't a taco. You've gotta have beef.  Cool

When I have homemade tacos, I put the beef on the taco first, then diced tomatoes, shredded cheese on top of that, and finally the sauce (hotter = better).

Other than that I eat them however Taco Bell makes them. I always get crunchy shells, never soft shells.

There's a local taco place called Taco Sombrero I go to sometimes as well. Their beef is way better than Taco Bell's and they've got a good habanero sauce that I put on the tacos as well as tamales or anything else I order there.
