Well, I got MK:SC when it released, touch the game once every few years for an half hour maybe. Anyways to make a boring story short I compared myself against the records for this game and others. Well I didn't put much time in time trial judging by the lack of 2,3,4,5, records for most courses. All the modern records seemed to blow mine away, and probably the historical records too.  With the exception of Donut Plains 3... My record I probably got in 2001-2003. I can't imagine much later. Anyways the game says:

Best time : 0'59''75
Best lap: 0'05''88


What's interesting is the best lap, which totally destroys 0'08''83 record by Shock

Unless I don't understand some record rule.?

I don't know how I did it, if I used 3 mushrooms on one lap or not, no idea. But even if I did I don't think it would remove 2 seconds???

Anyways this is a mystery, and potentially there is some maybe better way to race that level.

The answer to this is very simple, at one point you probably took a rather easy shortcut on rdp3, an example of which can be found here:

Basically in an effort to create a competitive environment in the game where tracks are played mostly as the were designed, a set of Non-SC rules were created back in 2006, they can be found here: http://www.mariokart64.com/mksc/rules.php
