And there are so, so many PG-13 films that have an f-word or two thrown in just to force the rating, so that it won't get PG and moviegoers won't dismiss it as a "kiddie" film. Though there are a lot of great PG movies that aren't necessarily aimed at kids, like Back to the Future, both Ghostbusters films, the Rocky series, the original Star Wars trilogy, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Top Gun, Groundhog Day, Sleepless in Seattle, Moonstruck, Runaway Bride, or Poltergeist. Some of those were made before PG-13 was created, but none of them have any patently "adult" material-- they're all great for the whole family.
Most PG-13 films in fact could probably just as easily have been PG-- witness the single F-bomb dropped early in Deep Impact, a movie that otherwise feels very PG-ish, just to force the rating to be bumped up. Similar lone F-bombs occur in My Best Friend's Wedding, Weekend at Bernie's, and Pretty in Pink. Other PG-13s are basically just PGs whose directors probably begged the MPAA to make it PG-13 and not PG, so it wouldn't be dismissed as a "kid's" movie. See the Jurassic Park films, Dr. Dolittle, Independence Day, the Batman series, Dirty Dancing, Wayne's World, Twister, Mrs. Doubtfire, the Mission: Impossible series, or the Ace Ventura films just to name a few. All very much family-friendly films with little offensive or disturbing content. I give special mention to Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, which not only does not feel like PG-13, it doesn't really even feel like PG! I'm a little disappointed that the MK films don't have the blood and gore that the video games have. Wouldn't Annihilation have been a lot more awesome if Liu Kang or one of the other fighters did a "Fatality" on Shao Kahn at the finale? But no, this movie is barely more violent than many G-rated animated films, with no profanity or sexually-charged content to speak of.
Titanic, Dances With Wolves, Notting Hill, and The Ring, on the other hand, actually deserved the PG-13 IMO. Possibly also Forrest Gump, Ghost, Big Daddy, or The Pelican Brief.
(Yeah I've watched mostly 80s/90s films lately)
