Super Mario Kart (NTSC) World Championship anyone?
02/08/17 at 10:45:01

So Kyle and I have been discussing lately the idea of having a SMK world championship here in the US for the NTSC version.  We both feel that Colorado would be a pretty epic location since it's somewhat central and there's a lot to do/see for anyone who's never been there.  Again, Colorado is only a suggestion so we'll post another poll later to see which state is best for all the state dwelling karters since the majority of participants would more than likely be from here in the US.  We'll also post a poll for dates later as well.  Now we're only curious about the number of people who would be interested if this were to actually happen and for the sake of the poll just assume that the time for the tournament is perfect for you.

Well it would be nice if you and the other top dogs could make it.  Some of y'all are even more beastly at the NTSC version so it would be a real shame if we couldn't import any of you SMK superstars  Cool

Of course I'd love to. I have the feeling I'm the only French player asking for a NTSC championship every year since 2008 or 2009. Even when I was the FFSMK president I tried to convince the players it would be cool to alternate PAL & NTSC every year, but nobody seemed to care. Undecided

I would love to attend one of those, but this year (and probably next year too) are going to be kinda hard for me on the financial side.

Its the same really with getting more players from outside Europe to attend CDM, can probably get a few each time, but only a few as it is difficult for them to travel and the costs etc. Maybe the focus would be to get as many from USA to attend this meet. Though America is huge and flights would still be needed but at least it is nearer. Then if a few from Europe can make it that would be good. Not likely i can do it either.

You should go as soon as possible, won't be long until Trump puts up a big wall to stop all you South Americans coming into the US whenever you want.

Well to somewhat echo what Sami said, the main priority here is to get as many people in the US involved as possible so that we can start having an annual "CDM" (with NTSC) here in the US.  With that being said, it would be ideal to have as many karters from Europe as possible come considering that is where the heart of the community lies (and best players as well to better represent the community :p).

Another idea that I've been flirting with is to maybe not make this an SMK exclusive event but to make it a part of an all Mario Karts event.  The entire Mario Kart Community is united by this website so I don't think that it would be that hard to plan.  Also, it would give a lot of us the opportunity to meet friends on the forum that we would otherwise never have the opportunity to meet.  Also having all of the communities involved would potentially cut down on the overall cost of funding.  There's even a good chance that Nintendo would partially sponsor the event with newer titles like Mario Kart 8 involved.  Again, this is only an idea.  I feel that an "American CDM" would probably have a better chance of success (especially for year one) if the other communities were involved.

There was a mini-meet in Chicago about 8 years ago where we played SMK for about 4 hours then moved on to other stuff (mostly drinking). Got to meet Joe Bernier for the first time and the legend Dave Smith, Cooper Lovera and Bo Garman. I'm sure there would definitely be interest, but the level of interest wouldn't match that of CDM in terms of playing SMK. Has the Virginia meet been happening in the last few years? I know it had pretty significant attendance a few years ago but haven't heard/read anything about it lately. If there were to be a MK community thing, that would be one to tag along with.

I'd love to attend of course Wink Not sure if I can, but I can defo give it a try !

Also, about Nintendo... It is far from certain that they would sponsor the event. They are more and more picky over the years about copyright and intellectual property cases (did you hear about the small Pokemon event that was banned a couple of years ago in the US, the organizors having to pay a fine ? And all the TAS videos of Nintendo games deleted on Youtube...)
We didn't explain this deeply here or on the french forum, but we've been experiencing issues about this last year: Nintendo France prevented us from using the 'world championship' reference on our banner, site and social networks. That's why you probably didn't see many 'SMK world championship 2016' advertisments last year, only 'SMK championships' (well, we still tried to put some discreet 'world championship' ads here and there, where it was pretty safe Roll Eyes But basically, we can't nymore).
To sum this up, they now consider that a real "world championship" of a Nintendo game has to be organized by Nintendo World, otherwise it is not, and you can't use this name...

Thanks for the info Flo!  In a perfect world Nintendo would help sponsor the event but it's definitely not imperative.
