Astoria: The Holders of Power Saga

Hi all,

If you enjoy old school turn-based RPGs, similar to Final Fantasy 4 or 6, or the Lufia games, or if you want to go even more obscure to Dragon Slayer or Cosmic Fantasy 2 from the Turbo Duo era, there is a new game on Kickstarter that might interest you.  It is made by my older brother over the course of the last 3 years using a tool called RPG maker.  He has spent thousands of hours creating and perfecting the game, and left me in charge of play testing and feedback, and in my attempted-unbiased opinion, it is a very, very good game.  My brother is a great storyteller in general and has been obsessed with Fantasy forever.  Combining that with the effort he put into this, he has created something pretty outstanding especially for a solo creator.  At the very least if you are slightly or potentially interested, check out the video at the top of the page and see what you think.  There are some nice backing bonuses as well.  If you have any questions I'd be happy to answer them.  And for those of you that likely do not know me, I'm an old MKDD USA karter.  I think I'm technically still top 10 in USA or something but haven't really played in years except the occasional blast from the past type sessions.  The link is immediately below, cheers!  Cool

I played the demo and I really liked it.  I loved the towns, dungeons, battles and the music.  There were a few puzzles and an assassination mission and I thought that was really cool.   If you like SNES rpgs, I think you will like this game.  It's pretty cheap, and well worth it.

I have RPG Maker as well, and I must say that after only a few minutes of gameplay that I am impressed.

Is there going to be any way to access the game files and toy with them with RPG Maker after purchasing our own copy? I would definitely appreciate being able to see all the coding and map design that he's done in all its detail.

Unfortunately no, the game will come packaged into an executable for copyright (and ease of play) reasons.  That being said, just from what I've seen and heard from the developer, RPG Maker is something you have to very seriously commit to, and live and breathe it for a long time to really master it.  There are RPG Maker forums and several people that can help and may have "open source" demos out there, but even in the case of this game, there will be a lot that is not easy to figure out on your own at first, and some sprites and environment you will ultimately have to find free somewhere or even commission someone who does it (which is a big part of the kickstarter, the developer is looking to get better mastered sprites and such).  Sorry that this probably wasn't the answer you were looking for, but, the developer of this game started from scratch 3 years ago... just found RPG Maker, had no programming background, no sprite/artistry skills, nor any other serious credentials to make a game like this... he just poured tons of time into research and talking to people and he eventually was able to shape the game into what he wanted, the good news here being anyone else could do the same.

That's fine and totally understandable. I am aware of the various forums and resources; I was mostly just curious and wanted to see in more depth all that hard work he had put in.

So, his grounds for claiming to be a dedicated professional come from the 3 years he's put into this game?

Does he mean RPG Maker professional? He's definitely met that claim.

Anyway, it looks awesome. I'm mostly just deciding on how much to back the project at this point.  Smiley

Basically, yeah.  The time he has spent, the building of his "brand," and ultimately now trying to sell it for money technically make him a professional, though I see your point overall.  In any case, glad you like the looks of it thus far.  Feel free to try the demo too if you haven't yet.

I'm glad you backed the project.  I hope you will like it.  Some people got a few bugs in the game, and the creator is fixing it as fast as he can.  I would urge you to use different save files so you won't get stuck if you find a bad bug.
