What kind of television do you use to play SMK?
06/24/16 at 12:00:57

This may be one of the more overlooked aspects of the game, especially for new players. I myself have jumped back, and forth from a Zenith bubble screen, and a small old model flat screen. I think they both have pros, and cons about them.
I visited with a friend I had not seen in a while to play some SMK, when I arrived  I realized he only had a modern flat screen, I knew it would be a train wreck from the start. It was still playable, but not very enjoyable due to the lag.
This topic is more to educate any newcomers that may be struggling with the game due to using the wrong kind of TV. I talked to Sami about which TV is best in the  past, he recommended a CRT TV. I finally have one but there is no A/V input. I will have to drop by a retro game shop to get an adapter, but really looking forward to playing at an optimal setting.

CRT, all the way. For those trying to learn the game, I highly suggest that they obtain a CRT somehow because that's how the game was meant to be enjoyed.

I have a recent plasma screen (2014) that plays NTSC (color) and PAL (black and white) without a noticeable lag for me.

I also have a 2008 LCD screen that plays the NTSC nicely, but the PAL is horribly lagged.

I also tried my PAL console on an old  (<2005) PAL LCD TV from France, and the lag was atrocious as well.

I use a COBY flatscreen and both the NTSC and PAL versions of SMK play just fine on it, no lag. PAL plays in black and white but this is due to an NTSC set being unable to decode PAL color data. You could put the SNES in 60Hz mode, and PAL will play in color, but it will play too fast, and the "beeps" of Lakitu's starting light don't sync with the lights.

This is the secret to why all of the PAL players are listed higher than any native NTSC players.  Smiley

Since when have Jack Richardson, Esther van der Meer, and Tanja Huber been listed higher than me and you?  Smiley
(Or about 400 other PAL people for that matter)

Black and white usually wasn't a problem for me, but the first NBT spot on CI2 was an exception-- those blue blocks really blended in with the brown chocolate when both showed up on my screen as the same shade of gray. I blew a couple of easily 1'08"xx runs because of that. There were a few other spots in the game where picture clarity was also an issue. I think I wouldn't have had as many 5lap crashes in general if the game could be displayed exactly as it would on a PAL TV, so I don't feel too bad about the (in my opinion) sub-par rank I achieved on PAL-- I was playing with a small (but not negligible) handicap. I believe you were as well, and that may well be part of the reason why Matt is about to take your PAL U.S. title.  Roll Eyes
I remain grateful for what Antistar and FFVIMan have done for me...  Smiley

I would add I highly suggest CRT for those trying to perform at a rather high level, for input lag reasons.

I've always played SMK on CRT, and the best one I've ever used (and have been using for the last four years) is a 51cm flatscreen Sony Trinitron that was released in the early 2000s, around the PS2 release.

The feeling of being a world champion is intoxicating, and I didn't want to ever not be the world champion again. Then I realized it didn't matter that much since I had nothing more to prove and achieved my most important goal(s).

I have a plasma flatscreen. The input lag is terrible, so I only use it SMKwise to sharpen up for CDMs. On a side note, training and refamiliarizing on either a plasma, or playing online with zsnes is actually really good as when you go back to a CRT everything feels really easy lol.

Would love to have a CRT setup to play on, but unfortunately our house is too small to do that.

Also, CDM is played only on CRT TVs.

At least 98% of my Time Trial sessions were done on a CRT TV 36cm. ^^ If I'm not wrong, I only use a 51cm at the end of 2008 when I catched NTSC NBT #1, and only because I couldn't use the 36cm one (it was black & white colors).

Eric and I purchased a CRT television at a goodwill in Monroe for $40 which was a pretty big rip off considering that the most expensive one I've come across over here in Germany was only 15 euros but still in yet it was totally worth it.  I've played on 4 different CRT's over here but not enough to the extent that I was able to pinpoint pros and cons between flat and bubble screens.  However whenever I have space for more than one tv then I will most definitely conduct an experiment  Smiley

I really miss that Philips TV I use to have before we played the game more seriously. Lol, the days of playing as Toad, and Koopa on Grand Prix. My niceness got the best of me giving it away, I did not know what I had.
