Well, I used to have all of them, now I only have a New 3DS XL

Anyway, the only difference with the Circle Pad is that for newer models (from around mid 2014) Nintendo started using a different material. Older models feel like they use rubber for the Circle Pad, whereas the newer models seem to use a material more similar to plastic, which feels slightly less loose. They made this change because many people's Circle Pads broke, so they made them more resistant.
Anyway, the best 3DS type for MK7 really depends on your preferences. If your hands are too big for a regular 3DS I think the 3DS XL and the 2DS are better. The 2DS is actually a very good option for TTing, but if you play online too it's the worst choice, because tapping the touch screen quickly is very awkward and impractical in races.
I've TT'd and played online regularly with every 3DS model, and I've found myself most comfortable with the 3DS XL (old and new). I liked all of them though, they all adapt pretty well to MK7. The only major issue is with the 2DS for online races, because of the reason outlined above.
