CDF-CDM development

Hey guys. This topic is especially directed at organisers and frequent participants of the SMK championships. I would like to know a bit more about its history, how the event grew and became what it is today. Based on the information I see on the ffsmk website and the few bits I was told at last year's CDM, I have the following questions:

1) The CDF started with 14-16 players the first couple of years. Did you try more than spreading the word about it on the internet and with friends? Were you lucky to have a strong basis/community in France with 20-30 people who like to come and partly learn the game?

2) When did you start cooperations with sponsors, most important Nintendo France? What does it take to get their attention and sponsorship?

3) When did the CDM draw media interest outside our MK community (local newspapers/TV channel)?

I also appreciate any stories beside answers to my questions above, feel free to write down your memories about the development of this great gathering Smiley.

Matthias

Like most 11 years old children I still had my mom wipe my arse when CDF 2002 started, not to mention she wouldn't let me anywhere near any sort of video game so there was obviously no way I could have been part of the early SMK French community. In other words I can't help much with your first question.

About Nintendo's involvement: I know CDF has been sponsored by Nintendo France since the first CDF in 2002 though I doubt knowing how we got it will help you much given that it was more of a long shot that surprisingly paid off. Basically the bloke who was in charge at the time (I think it was Frank Mazičres but I'm not sure) called Nintendo France and was like 'Yea we have that completely unofficial event we like to call French Championship of a game you released like 10 years ago going on and we were wondering if you could send us some Zarkov nice prizes as a sponsorship' and the person on the other end was prolly feeling generous or just bastard drunk because they replied 'Sure thing toots here are 2 GBA and 2 MKSC' and from that day on the sponsorship just got more and more generous which is quite baffling seeing Nintendo is said to be greedier and greedier over the years.

As for media interest: it mostly started in 2010 when tif took part in his first CDM and reached its peak in 2015 when he organized the whole thing like a rockstar as you witnessed.

Just one week before caivs discovered the splices, I had a dream where I took flight over a field. A creature ascended toward me from the nearby forest. As the creature approached, I looked at it and said:

"Ah, the antelope of death. It's because I cheated in Super Mario 64. This will need to be addressed soon."

Cheers mate but I just did what I had to, I'm glad it made you feel welcomed though Smiley Thank you for crossing an ocean just to have some beers with us (I don't think you really cared about the competition but I might be wrong there).

PAL isn't exactly the easiest thing in the world for native NTSC players to just pick up automatically. I had fun playing GP150cc, but I didn't expect to make it as far as I did. Maybe if I can find the money to attend another CDM I'll sign up for all the events, but I was happy with just having beers with all of you guys (and girls!); it really was a dream come true.  Smiley

Tif, back in 2009, when I first attended, there was media coverage. There were rumors around the city that a brazilian guy flew all the way from south america to participate. No one confirmed such bullshit though.
