Mushroom City driving line

Hey guys!

I'm watching a lot of videos lately, to learn tactics from other players (and also because I currently haven't my GameCube, which is frustrating). Most of them were really helpful!
There is one tactic though I'm not to sure about and thats the driving line for MCT.

Most of the players (well all actually) are driving like this:

- Start at the finish line, take the long turn to the right.
- take the first right and then go left
- continue forward and take the second to the right
- go left and immediately left again
- ...

Me though, I'm always taking the first to the right (compare with the step in bold) then left and only there I'm going straight forward. It just seems the same and as I'm used to my own driving line, I don't really wanna change that tactic Wink

I tried to explain it as good as possible, but I think most of you knew immediately what I ment :p

So my question is:

Does it make such a big difference? Is it really proven that the other driving line that everybody takes is better?

I'm only on Expert level so far, but it would be good to learn the more effective tactic right away!

Thanks a lot for the responses!

On the "MKDD For Noobs" site (link: http://home.online.nl/tbeuman/mkdd/) there's the 'strats' tab. At mush city there's an explanation about why we use that route:
Quote:
There are two junctions where you can make a choice of direction. Practically everyone goes right on the first junction, and then straight at the middle one, so right-(left)-straight-(right)-(left) (the parentheses denote forced directions). I'll try to explain why.
First off, there are two sections with pillars. If you go right-(left)-right-(left)-(straight) or straight-(right)-left-(right)-(left), you'll cover only one section. However, you'll need to cross through between the pillars, and on such a small section that's not optimal. The disadvantage of going straight-(right)-straight-(left)-straight, is that you'll only be taking two turns, while MTs are served best around corners. Also, if you draw straight lines between the insides of the corners you take, you'll find that with the right-(left)-straight-(right)-(left) strat you obtain the shortest distance (I'll skip the mathematical proof).

I tried to visualize it for you: http://i.imgur.com/Pxlrkag.png
Gray = your line
White = normal line

Basically gray line is longer + You'd need to stay on the left side on the straight to not 'go wide' there.

Hope that helps Cheesy

Great diagram, I like that!  Smiley

I do agree with you, although I'm not sure the white line is quite correct being that straight. It looks like it is dissecting the pillars, as the route most people take is down the left side of that road, then switch to the right hand side through a gap in the pillars whenever the traffic clears.

Nice image! Yea I can see now that it really is shorter... time to practice on this! If it works out for me this could be my first Expert A or even Hero D time!  Cool

I forgot about the site, was really helpful to me when I began playing. Maybe it's a good idea to look into it again.

The "shortest straight line" argument is not very good, I must admit. If you can successfully make your way through the pillars and find it easier to take the first right, then by all means go for it. I doubt it makes a huge difference. It certainly won't make the difference between Expert and Hero.
But give the normal line a try, you might like it.

Yea but that's the problem. Even if it doesn't make a difference for now, I'll need to get used to it if I'm going to get better. So I'll just give it a try and see what it does! Cheesy

That's the spirit Cheesy I would also start to learn the difficultier but more effective methode as soon as possible. Otherwise you might get used to the less effictive methode so much that it will become really hard to switch.

However, that specific driving line change actually made the difference between Expert and Hero on MCT for me x)
