I was tilting back so I could make it to the ledge. I thought if I held up, I would not get enough distance and fall short. Am I mistaken? Should I edit my approach? You won't fall short. The way you approach the ledge is just fine. If you hold up you get a speed boost, and since the ramp is higher than the ledge you're fine. Try landing right into the first coins of the ledge.
I feel like this is the hardest strat on the course. I can barely get my blue MT out there (I only get it 1/2 in my PR), how can I charge a red one? Counter drift? Drift earlier? I even just learned softdrifting so I don't think not softdrifting is an issue. Most important part is your landing right after getting the second coin on the ledge. You want to gain height by tricking, then slam your kart in the dark part so you barely don't fall off. Upon landing there start your drift. After that it's just common sense what to do not to hit the wall and the red minoturbo should be easily charged in time
Edit:. I think you could've gotten it in your run aswell if you just held your drift. There is no reason to release it where you did, I'm pretty sure it would always be better to just hold your drift there, even if it doesn't give you the red one
I don't trick, aren't I already doing this? Yes, but your landing is wrong. You land and then hop and then drift, while you're suposed to land into a drift.
Maybe this video will be able to help you with the track:
