Hi all, throughout the years there has been a few attempts at combining ranks for the PAL and NTSC versions of SMK.

I chose a different approach: I combined all standards (Average Standard Rating) from PAL and NTSC, then kept the best one for players with both. I am somewhat aware of the limitations of SR but I think it's the easiest way to have a idea of where we rank globally. For example my #118 AF NTSC rank gives me a #205 combined ASR, which makes sense once the PAL-only players are added. Also there were 49 players with PAL and NTSC.

You really can't compare PAL and NTSC players by standards alone; standards on PAL are often considerably harder than on NTSC, so this ranking puts PAL players at a sizable disadvantage. (I'm quite flattered that your list has me ahead of both Michael Jongerius and Matthew McCarthy!) The best way to do such a comparison is the way the Combined Mario Kart Rankings does it: compare each player's AF with the worst AF of whichever version of the game they're better at.

But because PAL is mechanically a slightly different game from NTSC (unlike MK64 or MKDD, where the 50Hz version simply runs slower), there really is no perfect way to compare players of the two versions. Your list has Oliver (the top NTSC-only player) ahead of Aron (the top PAL-only player) but I personally think it's much more evenly matched, and Aron may well have the edge (because many advanced strats are much more difficult to do in PAL, though that's not to say that Oliver couldn't be good enough to learn to do them in PAL)

Yeh, standards in ntsc a way easier than in pal (at least at my level) which is why my Av Standard in ntsc is better than in pal despite me having played pal at least 50x more pal than ntsc.

Of course I am aware of the mechanics difference between both versions. It's just an exercice I did for for myself to have a better idea of my global position within the SMK community. It's the easiest way I found to do so.

To refine the comparison we could take a look at the distribution of drivers in each standard (http://www.mariokart64.com/smk/statsp.php) for both systems, and assuming average skill is identical, we could correct for that harder bias for PAL. But it's a lot more complicated

Also, Nicholas, thanks to your mention of you playing PAL in black and white, I tried plugging my PAL console with my NTSC AV cable to my NTSC TV, and to my great surprise and delight I got an image... B/W, very blocky, but that lag I got with my SCART to HDMI adapter was gone!!! So now I can finally try to improve my 1997 PAL times!

I had also read somewhere on this forum that Karel did the reverse, i.e. plug a NTSC console in a PAL TV, and he also got a B/W image.

Hi David (?), yes, there is virtually no PAL TVs available here. An easier option is to buy a PAL TV tuner card from Europe, but then I would need a computer to be able to play, which complicates (also people will think an emulator is being played... I just read yesterday the whole fuss about Guillaume Bertrand's cheating back in 2007).

Last weekend I tried my cousin's PAL LCD TV with SCART from France, but the image lagged a lot. I assume it's because it's an older TV (probably 10 years old). I  know everyone uses CRTs because of this. However my recent (2014) 64-inch plasma TV displays my NTSC SNES without a problem. Everything is crisp and quick. Same thing for the PAL console in black and white as I just mentioned above.
