I watched as well, good to see it finally happened! I read an interesting article a few days ago about how this would finally be the year a horse would break through (http://espn.go.com/horse-racing/story/_/id/12997211/pharoah-rule) since we're finally returning to the racing fields of the previous Triple Crown winners.

It was the fastest time in the Belmont since 2001 (and looking even further, 2001 was the fastest since 1992, so this was the 3rd fastest time of the past 25 years)...I don't think it really mattered what the field looked like. This race was only about one horse, and he delivered.

This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime event... most of us here weren't born yet in 1978, the last time the Triple Crown was won, and it may well be the last Triple Crown win we'll ever see, for all we know. I think such an event deserves its own topic.

And I was lucky enough to see this live. Cool

Something I've never seen before, and possibly something I'll never see again... Quite simply, the biggest day in the sport of horse racing in our entire lifetimes. I'm not even into horse racing, but I just could not pass up the opportunity to see something that I may never, ever get to see again while I'm alive.

Come December 31, this will certainly go down as one of the biggest news events of 2015...
I might actually save tomorrow's newspaper for this, much as I saved the newspaper the day after the New Orleans Saints won the Super Bowl-- another thing I might never see happen again.

Now let's wait and see if the Cubs will make the World Series...

This is pretty freaking special, no horse has won all 3 races since 1978.

Although I thought it was going to happen in 2009 with Mine That Bird, most unreal finishing speed I've ever seen (here he comes back from dead last and way behind the pack to win by a ton)

Unfortunately he got boxed out in the Preakness and could only come back to 3rd or so.

Have you read some of the topics in General Discussion?

This was truly a remarkable event and race.  Congratulations to American Pharoah!  I can't believe I finally saw a Triple Crown winner.

As a horse racing expert, here's my 2 cents: American Pharoah won the triple crown. But he won't go down as a highly regarded winner or extremely popular. All he beat in the race were Mubtaahij, Frosted, and some claimers. He didn't have the tough Sham to deal with like Secretariat did, nor did he have the champion Alydar up his ass every time he race like Affirmed did (Seattle Slew got away with it kinda easy if your wondering). American Pharoah, got away with the easy lead, and honestly that was probably the most unexciting triple crown win ever. He Derby win was impressive, but the other two races lacked quality (well the Preakness wasn't that bad). His owners are absolutely shitty people, they don't deserve this for anything. All in all, American Pharoah won, but it means nothing to a great number of people in the Horse Racing Industry. And while they say there going to run American Pharoah till the end of the year, don't be surprised if they don't. He's worth a lot more in the Stallion Barn (somewhere between 20 and 55 million) than on the track.

@Brett, Idk why you would think Mine That Bird would win the Triple Crown. He was so shitty but lucky in the Derby. Then he wasn't even the favorite in the Preakness. The filly Rachel Alexandra was, and she ended up beating him. And when he went to race in the Belmont, Mine That Bird did even worse. He then went on to the West Virginia Derby, finished third, and never even hit the board in his next 15 subsequent starts.

I had no reason other than that I thought he was insane in the kentucky derby. And I know nothing about horse racing btw. My mom got pissed off last year (or 2 years ago, I forget) when I told her California Chrome wasn't going to win. Same with Smarty Jones.

Don't see how he was lucky in the derby, it looks like he blew the entire field away. Can you explain it to me? I'm not saying you're wrong, heck I'm almost certainly wrong but I want to know why.

Brett, we have a saying in horse racing, it's "Pace Makes the Race." Mine That Bird just got awfully lucky. Fast pace, and he liked the slop against a weaker Derby field. And it's pretty obvious it's a fluke seeing as how bad he was for the rest of his career. He was just a weird horse in a weird race that made no sense when he won. It's hard to explain, but he was just uber lucky. Fun fact about him, in the winter of 2008 he was actually among the top choices fir the Derby, and the favorite for the Queen's Plate (the Canadian Kentucky Derby).

California Chrome was a different story. He is just a weak horse who stood out in a weak crop. This will be proven in about a week when he races at the Royal Ascot.

Now Smarty Jones was really different. He should have one, he was so tough to the end but couldn't get it. We used to use Smarty's regular rider as our stable rider.

And here something interesting for ya Brett, we had this nice horse Jazzit. And we entered him in a little 100k Stakes race called the Iron Horse. And in the the same race was Mine That Birds half brother, Brother Bird. Here's the race if you wanna watch, it's a good one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ltuyo3hfbCs&feature=youtube_gdata_player

American Pharoah won the Belmont with one of the fastest times in the history of the race and the 2nd fastest time for a Triple Crown winner.  I don't see how that win lacked quality.

In horse racing quality and time are to separate categories. His time was the 6th fastest at the modern day distance of the Belmont Stakes (yet it's still far of the record). To me, when I handicap a race, I never look at finishing times. We had this horse named Knockinelder and it set a course record for 5 and a half furlongs in the turf at Monmouth Park. The horse never won a stakes race of any kind and was later claimed for 25k. Time is a bad way to judge any horse.

Quality is a different story. Besides American Pharoah, he had 3 class ok-ish competitors. Frosted, winner of the Wood but he has no other major wins to his credit. Mubtaahij, winner of the UAE Derby but a really bad player in the Derby. And Materiality, winner of the Florida Derby who only started 4 times prior to this race and finished of the board in the Derby. In addition to his off the board finnish, Materiality has no pedigree for this race. Between the other 4 competitors they had  1 stakes win all together. They all held 0 back class and didn't look like competition for American Pharoah.  So essentially American Pharoah only had to face 2 horses that had a chance. Quality was a serious issue in this race, because there was almost none.

You didn't really offer any proof that time was a bad way to judge a horse other than the fact that one horse who set a great time once didn't do well after that.

Regardless of how it was done, to win a Triple Crown in today's day and age is really a great feat and he will go down as a great horse, no doubt.

It is an impressive accomplishment, I don't disagree, I just think he got away with it easy.

Nobody uses finishing times because there inadequate. A time could be longer or shorter depending on if a horse travels closer to the rail or not. Or maybe the time is inadequate because the jockey wrapped up the horse at the end. Just cause a horse ran 1:48 and change in his last start, doesn't mean another horse who ran the same distance can't win just because he ran 1:52 and change. So essentially, no one uses time because it's just inadequate because there are to many variables to screw it up.

I completely forgot that last night was the home opener for the Biloxi Shuckers minor league baseball team. It's safe to say that American Pharoah [sic] is now the most famous horse in the world, if not the most famous animal in the world, period. He's probably the most valuable animal in the world right now, too. He just earned another $1 million plus last night. Victor Espinoza's gotta be worth some serious money now himself.

Tough question. Most think it's either Secretariat or Man O War, both were good. Triple crown wise, Affirmed was the toughest and one of the best in my opinion. Tested by Alydar every step of the way. We've had some great horses in recent years like Zenyatta, the female Breeders Cup Classic winner who won 19 of 20 starts. Curlin and Wise Dan have also been great horses and were both horse of the year twice. Rachel Alexandra was an awesome filly who won the Preakness, the Haskell, and the Woodward. She was a super filly. But if I was to say best of all it might be Ruffian, she set dozens of records. Was undefeated except for the race that killed her. Tough moment in horse racing when she died at the track. But she does have the 4 biggest honors a horse can get. Hall Of Fame, major stakes named after her, buried whole, and buried at the track. I think the best horse would either be Ruffian or Man O War, but I'd tip my hat to Ruffian.

American Pharoah appraised at somewhere between 40 and 60 million. And Espinoza (who has had a good year but I consider to be an average rider) donated his winning share of roughly 40k after taxes and paying his agent and valet to charity.
