Contacting Japanese SMK Players

Hey, Ethan from MKSC here. Anyways, the title says it all.

Just curious about what you guys think about the possibility of maybe contacting and/or recruiting some of the Japanese community. Because I'm sure there are/were more than 5 or so players from Japan who were highly skilled.

I know that MKSC had a HUGE Japanese following back when it was fairly new, between 2001-2006 or so. Many of these Japanese were fairly old at the time, and exhibited such talent at MKSC that I'm sure at least some of them had to be pretty good at SMK. Namely among these people that interest me are the likes of Su (Kiyotaka Umeki / cstrakm, the guy who did the SMK GP TASes and was the MKSC SC world champion from 2004-2012). He seems to have a huge amount of knowledge about the game through viewing the TASes, and he was obviously extremely skilled at MKSC. Another player, though he's a bit of a hermit/MKDS fanatic now, is Yatakoba (some of the guys who played MKSC or visited GFAQs in 2002-2003 might remember him as Sato or Gikowarda).

Anyways, I contacted one of the most knowledgeable people throughout all MK communities, and arguably the man with the most connections. He may be a cheater, but at least he's willing to help: Shota Hirano, better known as Mander (was viewed as THE MKSC God until he was caught TASing MKW in 2012 and banned from MKSC after). Here's our Twitter conversation:

@mandermka do you know any Japanese who play the SFC MarioKart? We would like to know of potentially skilled players. Thank you!
Cheers,
H.

@hahaae Yes. SFC Player is in mixi. But I'm not contacting SFC Player for a while.

With that said, I might be able to convince him to help me find some of the Japanese community and maybe interest then in competing again, or at least being interested in joining the site. He may be a cheater and can be difficult to work with, but he and I are (or at least, were) great friends; he was my mentor on MKSC in 2011 and taught me almost everything I know about SC racing.

However, the Japanese community also raises a few issues with the site here. Many of them don't compete in flaps, nor do they remotely care about flaps (this was definitely the case in MKSC, where most of the Japanese flaps are just their splits). So I don't know if they would be able to join the site a la Sami's particular joining rules. Many of them (if there are many/any) are also likely to frown upon NBT. I know the introduction to ZZMT in MKSC (same thing as NBT) drove many of the Japanese away, many of which never came back (such as Su). Just thought I'd ask you older SMK fellows about the matter before I really pursue it or anything. I do think that the Japanese players, if they play time trials, likely have a lot of talent and could compete at high levels, at least in nonNBT, etc.

p.s. Sami's rule for joining the site is worse than testicular cancer

Not sure how the rules for joining are worse than testicular cancer. The game saves your best laps, so it's not like you have to keep track of all laps to get a full time set. I don't care too much about flaps and I got to a decent level before calling it a career (not saying I'm retired, I got a CDM to attend!) If they don't want to compete much on flaps, then they can get all 20 of the 5lap WRs.

The NBT issue is the exact reason why we have the non-NBT site. Plus you can achieve a very high level on the main site with just non-NBT driving, just not top ten or anything.

Of course we would love to have more players of all skill levels. It's not just about the competition and giving Guillaume another reason to achieve times the game's creators never imagined possible, it's about building the community and making some lifelong friends. I never would have had the chance to beat the crap out of Joe Bernier if it weren't for this site! I'm sure many people feel the same way about all the cool people they've met because of this game.

If they're still unsure, just suggest watching CDM on twitch in August. They may enjoy the competition and camaraderie and that might be enough to get them to join.

Spot on, Dan! I don't know about other people, but when I joined the site I never imagined that I would have done the things that I've done and met the people that I've met and made those lifelong friends that you mentioned.

Sure, it's just all just a game in the end, but for many of us, it became so much more. And that being said, I do wish that more people would see the game the way that Dan and I see it. I feel privileged that I'm able to say that I have good friends in countries other than my own.  Smiley

Also, I remember back in the day the Japanese players having their own site apart from Sami's with their own records and rankings, and I couldn't really figure out why. I think it was because that was about the time when NBT was taking a stronghold of the Players' Site, but nonetheless it has always been hard to get more Japanese players to join our rankings.

They certainly know about our world rankings, but I think they just prefer to stay on the outside for whatever reason.

At this point in my life the game is a mere detail.
I'm not flying 12+ hours just to play a game I can play at home.

I know Ha Nyan, for example, is a guy that has traveled the world and cares about meeting other people (he met Alencar here in Brasilia). So we can't just say that they are all antisocial. I would love to see more japs joining the Player's Page though, considering how many stories I've heard throughout the years.

As time goes by it will get harder to find players maybe who have a lot of free time to play, particularly the older crowd where most of the retro Mario Kart players would reside. MKSC had an insanely long list of Japanese competitors i remember, and then not to forget Mario Kart 64 and the famous Mario Raceway Shortcut competition that took the country by storm in 1996 / 1997.

There were a few sites from back in the day, the large one you referred to which Su was on was run by a gentleman by the nickname Mitsuya Mikan. He explained back in probably 2006 time that he wanted to keep his site as a personal project only. Not long after he took it all down.

The same happened with an SFC F-zero page in Japan. Luckily BPA and I managed to rescue a copy of some of the Japanese records from former 1990s / early 2000s record holders as the owner of that site eventually shut it down too. Perhaps they wanted to or they stopped paying for their website.

In terms of strategies, i am asked very often why we boost off road etc and that it is unrealistic. But since when is Mario Kart realistic, the whole invention is an imaginative step away from reality anyway. Agreed if anyone doesn't want to play laps, it shouldn't be hard to check as they are there when you finish each race. It did annoy me a bit when they started to abolish laps when MK7 and MK8 were around, but i suppose there is less to work on then.

Takashi Ogasawara is a very skilled player who attended CDM, unfortunately he is more of a GP specialist, than Time Trial. But having made the breakthrough of someone from Japan join our event was a massive step forward. Unfortunately he couldn't have the time to search for other competitors to get involved on a regular basis. He was due to visit an anime event with Akita last year but i think he had to cancel that trip too as one or both of them were busy. Speaking to Ha Nyan often, they do work some pretty long hours there and maybe not have as much free time as us in Europe probably.

Retro video game events are a great way to find some new skilled players, we have done the same in the UK, and i think Guillaume / Florent have also scouted around in some expos in France too such as Stunfest.

It would be a good move to at least spread the word about the Twitch for CDM, that is our highlight event of the year anyway Smiley

How does someone get to the front page on twitch? Is it something you pay to get featured? Would be great to have it there for at least one day.

You'd have to mail the Twitch admins, so they are at least aware of the event and can consider the possiblity. Maybe with Neo's connection from his pro-team (Meltdown), it can happen (they probably have contact with Twitch anyway I'd be guessing).
