MK Chess Tournament

It's about time...

Chess Tournament(s)

There are actually going to be two, run in parallel:

Postal Chess

Each participant will play against all the other participants at the same time. In case there are more than ten participants, I may reconsider the format.
For each game, the colors are decided in advance by chance (though the difference between the number of Whites and Blacks is at most one for everyone). The games will be played on chess.com. Once your opponent makes a move, you have 24 hours to reply. It is my understanding that it is possible to request extra time, in case you're unavailable for a while.
You are not allowed to use any computer assistance, books or databases.

Note that these games can last a long time, so don't sign up unless you are prepared to commit yourself!

Blitz

The players will be divided into groups of size 5~6 (depends on the number of participants). Players from Europe/Africa and from the Americas will be separated. Players from Asia/Australia will be put in a separate group if there are enough of them, or will be assigned to a group that is most convenient timezone-wise.
Within each group, everyone plays against everyone else twice, once with White and once with Black.
The games will be played on lichess.org. The time control is 10 minutes plus 3 seconds per move, per player per game. It is up to the players to arrange a date and time to play.
All games should be finished within three weeks.
At the end, the winners of each group (and maybe the numbers two as well, depending on the number of participants) will qualify for the King's group, which has the same format, to decide the overall winner.

Note that the players are expected to take initiative in order to play the games, so don't sign up unless you are willing to make the effort!

Signing up

Before you sign up, read the information above, in particular the comments in bold face.
You can sign up until Sunday the 19th. You are free to participate in both tournaments.

If you want to play, leave a post and clearly specificy in which tournament(s) you want to participate.
If you want to play in the Blitz tournament, don't forget to say in which continent you live, and in which timezone if it's not Europe or America.

Postal Chess

We have eight players, and as said, we'll be playing all games at the same time.

How to Play

Everyone, get an account at chess.com (if you haven't already) and report your member name here.

Set up a new game

To challenge someone:
- In the top menu bar, go to "PLAY", and click on "Online Chess"
- Click on "Start New Game"
- In the "Choose Opponent" field, select "Member"
- Type in the name of your opponent (do NOT press Enter!)
- In the field "Select Game Options":
  * Set "Days Per Turn" to 1
  * Select the right color
- Click on "Create New Game"

If you receive a challenge, check that you play with the right color!

Pause your game

If you're unable to play for a while, you can take some vacation time. On your "Online Chess" page (http://www.chess.com/echess/myhome) click on "Settings" and put a tick in "Pause My Games". If you don't do this, you will lose on time (unless you have a premium account)! Note that you have a limited amount of vacation time.

Conditional moves

You can enter "conditional moves": look for the link and click on it (if it's your opponent's move), select a move for your opponent and enter your response. If your opponent makes that move, your move will be executed immediately. If you can predict your opponent's move(s) after that, you can enter even more. It can speed things up, especially in case of exchanges. Unfortunately, non-paying members can only enter one line, so if you don't get your opponent's move right, it doesn't fly.

Color

The color of each game is shown in this table:

  12345678

1 .WBWBWBW
2 B.WBWBWB
3 WB.WBWBW
4 BWB.WBWB
5 WBWB.WBW
6 BWBWB.WB
7 WBWBWB.W
8 BWBWBWB.

(Player 1 will have white against player 2, black against 3, white against 4, etc.)

Blitz

These are the poules:

Poule A

                   |  1   2   3   4  |  Tot
-------------------+-----------------+-------
1  Alaktorn        |  X   -   -   -  |   -

2  Aron Langerak   |  -   X          |
                   |                 |
3  tif             |  -       X      |
                   |                 |
4  TvL             |  -           X  |

Poule B

                   |  1   2   3   4  |  Tot
-------------------+-----------------+-------
1  Fank009         |  X  00          |   0
                   |                 |
2  Michael F       | 11   X  11  11  |   6
                   |                 |
3  Sportsguy001    |     00   X      |   0
                   |                 |
4  theyounggun     |     00       X  |   0

In each poule, everyone plays against everyone else twice, once with either color. The games do not have to be played in any particular order.
At the end, the number one of poule A will play the number two of poule B, and the number one of poule B plays the number of two of poule A. The winners play against each other for the crown.

In case of a tie (either in a poule or in a match), the players involved will play a single armageddon game to decide the winner. In case of a draw, the winner is Black. White will get 10+3, Black will get x+3. The two players make a secret bid for x. The player with the smallest x gets Black.

How to play

Get in contact with your opponents and find a time to play on (watch out for different time zones!). Keep in mind that each game could last half an hour.

One of the players does this:
- Go to http://en.lichess.org
- Click on "Play with a friend" (on the right)
- Keep "Variant" on "Standard"
- Put a check in the "Time control" box
- Set "Minutes per side" to 10
- Set "Increment in seconds" to 3
- Choose your color
You will get a URL. Copy it and communicate it to your opponent.
If you post the URL here in this topic, make sure to add the name of your opponent to avoid confusion.

After the game, let me know the result, by posting it in this topic for instance. If your opponent posts it, check that it's right.

Please try to finish all your games in two weeks. If time is running short, I'll start bullying people into playing. Please don't let it come to that.

Keep an eye out for updates in this post.

Postal.
Are we allowed to use the analyze feature on chess.com (as in making moves for your opponent so you can see how well a certain move of yours plays out)? I would imagine that is fine as long as you don't use a stockfish to find the best move for yourself.

If it's similar to setting up a board yourself and moving the pieces around, then that's just fine.

“In case of a tie (either in a poule or in a match), the players involved will play two games at 5+2 to decide the winner. This will repeat itself until there is a winner.”

Can’t we think of a better tie-breaker? Make it just go to sudden death with random or player-decided color maybe? I don’t like the idea of possibly having to play multiple new games to determine a winner.

Playing only 1 game would be unfair because white has an advantage.

Another type of tiebreaker is armageddon, but lichess doesn't have an option for that.  In armageddon, white has 5 minutes and black has 4 minutes, and a draw counts as a win for black.
