Hello I'm Anna and I decided to pick up double dash as I had been meaning to for a while and would like some general advice about driving / karts
At the moment I am working through the GPs to unlock the train for use in time-trail and the computer is a nightmare on 150cc, at the moment I am using peach / daisy with waluigi racer. which kart is recommended for GP until getting the train or toads kart?
regarding the system of the game, should I just be doing as many MTs as possible or spacing them like MK64 or something inbetween?
Once I unlock the karts I'll post some vids so you can see my starting level and give better advice

MKDD is a hard game to get the grasps of the way the karts handle, since a lot of things don't intuitively make sense. I have no idea what the best kart is besides BT or TK but you should seriously unlock both of them, BT is basically a necessity if you want to get anywhere in this game. As for the MT's, it's a little bit of both. You do need some spacing but the length of the MT boost is much shorter than on MK64 so you want to do more MT's in a shorter time.

Hey Anna, great to see you moving to this field of MK! Brett's right about the MT spacing; it's possible to not space enough but the time between MTs is much shorter than in MK64. Just watch some videos and you'll get the hang of how long to glide. As for kart choice, Barrel Train is what you'll use pretty much everywhere. Most people use Toad Kart on the bumpy DKM and I've also seen it on WS. You can try it on other tracks but not too much reason to.
The main thing you should watch out for is to avoid doing MK64 style MTs. In MK64, after hopping you have to go right-left-right-left-right to get a right facing MT. In MKDD, it's right-left-middle-left-middle. Those may not be 100% correct but the idea is that you only have to go to the middle and not all the way across. You'll have to adapt to that and also the lack of a hop, which means you start charging instantly after pressing R. Good luck if you want to try to juggle the two games; after reaching Hero level (never finished my timeset but was looking at high Hero) 2 years ago, my MK64 skills turned to trash. It's best to pick one game and stick with it so you can really get the feel of the MTs.
TvL's website will be a big help with more specific stuff, you can find it here:

. Good luck climbing the charts!

Thanks guys
I'm still trying to grind out the GPs to get the karts. I watched a few vids and the spacing looked tiny compared to MK64 which is why I was wondering if I should play it like the DS. When I unlock the train I'll make an initial (bad) timeset

Here's just some examples. MTing in the air in addition to charging an MT allows you to fast fall. When you MT on straightaways, releasing A briefly during the boost part of the MT allows you to keep a straighter line. Let's say you are MTing around a left turn that's long enough to chain multiple MT's. If you release an MT you want to press left to allow the kart to boost right enough to not go into the grass/wall (I'm thinking of LC first turn). Shrooms make you slide sharper, as do spamming the MT button during sharp turns, which saves a ton of time on WC but is used on several other courses too. Just things like that, they don't make sense until you really understand how the kart behaves from playing enough.

For me, DD is like MK64 on ice. The whole no hopping thing probably contributes to that, but something about this game feels so smooth. I don't have a good reason to buy a Wii U, but if they re-release this game with wifi support and online matches, I'd throw my money at Nintendo.

Yeah, he did a good job of explaining, but people who don't play MKDD don't realize just how backwards some of the controls are. Hold right to go left, release A around this turn to swing your back end wide, release A on a straight to minimize sideways motion, it really makes no sense. If someone were to watch me play and ask why I do half the things I do, I honestly would have difficulty explaining because it's so much about getting a feeling for how the kart behaves. That's why I think the learning curve for this game is particularly high--because as good as the MKDD for noobs site is, no website could ever come close to detailing some of the minor facets of this game.

Ok I unlocked the train and had a go on Luigi circuit. I'm getting around 1'28"xxx / 28"1xx which I'm not very happy with. I streamed on twitch earlier but no sound came out and it was choppy so I'm going to record a local video now and post it

I now have a set of Intermediate / Advanced times for 10 courses and 6 courses left to try, all of star cup, WC and RR.
This game is a real struggle coming from an MK64 / SMK background but I feel I am starting to understand the mechanics a bit
I'll try to post some more videos soon

I'm considering to give this game a go again, because I noticed there are no norwegians in the top 100 which is quite dissapointing...
I'm just curious, how long would it take for a player like myself (who's at a quite noobish level, I'm barely able to beat the LC staff ghost
) to get to a decent level, somewhere within the top 100? I've heard this game is the hardest to get really good at, compared to other mk's

I think your DS experience should help a lot, just remember that you need to space the MTs a bit more as starting another slide kills the boost unlike in MKDS. I think if you studied some videos to see the proper spacing you could get the hang of it pretty quickly.

Hello Anna ! I've begin Time trial in MKDD recently like you ! (even if I just played at MK46 for fun, not as well as you ^^). I've noticed that good trajectory is better than a bad MT ^^, and the staff ghosts are a good practicing for begin and learn good techniques for each circuit. So... good luck and try to beat me ;p
