Destined to hold a Retro WR
06/29/14 at 06:22:01

I wasn't sure where I should post this, but I guess here would be the best place, because of the highest WR acitivity. I've compiled a list of players that managed to get a WR on a Retro, after having held the WR on that same track in a previous game. Time truly has no power over them.

MK8

Cole: Cole has been dominating on GBA MC since the game came out. But we could expect that. 8(!) years ago, Cole managed to grab the flap WR on the same track on MKSC.

You can download Cole's MKSC flap WR here: http://wrvids.com/Mario%20Kart/MKSC/mc-1635-Gilbert.wmv

Ray: Canadiens have thing for this. Ray needed only 1 WR in MK8, DK Jungle, the track he owns. Glitch or no-glitch, retro or nitro. Ray will get it. Now he's just rooting for retro DK Jungle glitch too.

Alexony: The king of MK7 also made the switch to MK8. And ofcourse, where better to start than on a track you fought for the WR since the very first day of the game. At the moment, he's lost his WR on both games, but he'll be sure to fight back.

MK7

Shaun: Shaun does something peculiar here. He first gets the WR on the retro track, and 2 and half years later, he manages to do the same on the original track on the original game. Maybe his recent Coconut Mall WR inspires him to get his rCM WR in MK7 back?

G-Danzee: Giulio gets WRs on two games that are totally different in terms of gameplay. 7 years ago, as one of the MKDS greats, he was the first to sub 2 minutes on Waluigi Pinball. In 2011, he returned to the track on the 3DS, getting several WRs again.

Mick: We were bound to find him on this list, as he has held numerous WRs across many games. On MK7 and MKW, he got the Maple Treeway WRs. He wasn't able to hold on to them for too long, but it was more than enough to be mentioned in the list of lists.

And he managed to do it twice on this game. No MKW-MK7 double this time, but the rather special MKSC-MK7. He tied the BC1 flap WR in 2009 in MKSC and he briefly held the MK7 BC1 WR.

Twice I said? Ofcourse I meant three times! And once again, something different. He in fact got a WR on 2 Retro tracks. How is that possible? Because MKSC recycled all of the SNES tracks. Mick managed to get the SNES Mario Circuit 2 WR on both MKSC and MK7.

MKW

NOBUO: We know him as the guy that works for nintendo and hoards his strats. But in total, he did manage to get quite an impressive number of WRs. He broke through on MKDD, getting the Peach Beach WR, among others (no video available, unfortunately), and a couple of years later, he got the WR on the same track in MKW.

Cole: And there he is again. It may be a very long time ago, but Cole actually held a couple of MKDS WRs. And ofcourse, it had to be on the track that he so epicly subbed last year. Yes, it is no other track than Yoshi Falls.

And some more Cole. This time on Desert Hills.

Mick: Another we've seen before on this list. Mick seems to have held pretty much every flap WR in MKSC, and he just had to repeat those feats in the newer games.

G-Danzee: The king of Delfino Square had set his mind on the MKW WR long before the game was even announced. And when G-Danzee wants a DS WR, G-Danzee will get a DS WR.

Fabien: We all know Fabien as one of the greatest MKDS players. But he also managed to get one of the very first WRs on Peach Gardens on the Wii.

I might edit this later with some MKDS doubles, but that'll need a lot more research. Make sure to tell me if I missed someone.

Do trick WRs count?

SMK, GV2 trick flap: http://wrvids.com/Mario%20Kart/SMK/Fastest%20Available%20Vids/Trick/gv2trick-...
MKWii, GV2 3lap: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ETBzXj1aMPY (what makes this one even cooler is that the time matches the nickname)

I thought I would have more, since I've held WRs in 7 different games, but that's the only one I can find.

Edit: I found 2 more.

SMK, DP1 trick flap: http://wrvids.com/Mario%20Kart/SMK/Fastest%20Available%20Vids/Trick/dp1trick-...
MKDS, DP1 3lap/flap: Since I held 64/64 WRs, I must have held these, but I don't know the times and can't find the vids.

KB2:
SMK, KB2 trick flap: http://wrvids.com/Mario%20Kart/SMK/Fastest%20Available%20Vids/Trick/kb2trick-...
MKSC, KB2 3lap/flap: http://wrvids.com/Mario%20Kart/MKSC/kb2-4546-Fried.MPG / http://wrvids.com/Mario%20Kart/MKSC/kb2-550-Fried.MPG
MKDS, KB2 3lap/flap: Again, I must have held these, but can't find the vids.

I'm pretty sure those MKDS vids existed at some point in time, so if anyone has them, I'd appreciate if you could upload them (although they're just replay vids so I doubt they're interesting to watch).

Another interesting thing about Nobuo is that he has held the WR in 8 different Mario Circuits in 5 different games.

The following examples don't fit the criteria of this thread perfectly, but they are still somewhat relevant:

Blake dominates DK Summit in Mario Kart Wii.  He comes back and instantly monopolizes a very similar track (similar chasm cut, too) on MK8 - Mount Wario.

ZRoyal.  WR on N64 Mario Raceway in MKW, and instantly takes over Royal Raceway in MK8.

Mick.  He was found dominating Moo Moo Meadows in MKW for a while in the earlier stages of the game's life.  He was quickly found in the top spots of the MK8 top ten for this track in the remake.

Sami Cetin, Pierre L'Hoest, Sebastian Stellmacher, Simon Laflamme, and Alencar Faria (and possibly other people who I'm forgetting) have held WRs for the same track in SMK and MKSC.

Cole also took the Kart WR on DS Yoshi Falls in MKW shortly before the release of MK8.

I really like this thread. After getting a WR, I've definitely felt a much stronger affinity for the track, that would make me want to return to it in a later game if possible.
I'd be interested to know whether this is also the case with most if not all of these players, or is it sometimes just simply a coincidence?

Like Michael said, if trick/glitch WRs count at all:

I took the DP1 SC flap WR on SMK with 0"43 in like 2013 or something (I don't remember because it's not a WR I care much about; got it by accident), and I hold the SC flap/5lap WR for RDP1 on MKSC.

Nice thread. In MKWii I focused on YF and DH at first because they were my favourite+best tracks in MKDS.

Some other examples:
marinous on PB (MKDD+MKW)
rapha64 on PB (MKDD+MKW)
shadow on DKJP (MK64+MKW)

This thread is awesome.

Guess this means I have to go for the rDP3 WR once I get MK8.  Grin

Very cool thread.

Along a similar tangent to Michael's inclusion of trick/SC times, I held the Grand Prix flap WR on Mario Circuit 2 in SMK, before taking the non-ZZMT WR on Retro Mario Circuit 2 in MKSC.

Not retro tracks but Hikage seems to like water tracks.
He held WRs for Wario Shipyard on MK7 and Dolphin Shoals on MK8.

Awesome thread!

Sorry to be nit-picky, but Giulio wasn't the first to sub 2 minutes on WP, B-Dash was: he did it 1 day before Giulio  Grin
