Guide to driving DP3

tip #1: use the DPad, to take turns tightest

after startboost, hop right-left-neutral as quickly as possible, then go into a right drift while softdrifting, try to align yourself so that your front wheels go over the grass for maximum tightness (it only slows you down if you hit it with the back wheels)
try to stay tight to the right on the bridge, do the SMT, hop tech, and then try to enter the patch of grass while doing a tight right drift, there is a sweet spot where you’re “launched” forward above the grass without slowing down, and I find it’s easier to hit it if you’re a lot to the right
shroom as late as possible, you don’t want to hit grass at the end of your shroom
at the end of the shroom while you’re still on the grass, release the SMT while holding right, this makes you go tighter than simply drifting
then when you land, press left to align yourself for the next turn: here is a major time saver, you need to enter the turn tightly, while going over the brown road, so that your bottom-right wheel sticks to the bottom and has no air time, air time costs a lot here
then simply take the turn tightly, release the SMT ASAP out of the air, the sooner you do it, the faster you’ll be (but don’t jump out of the water), here there’s also a luck-based boost, sometimes you’ll boost a lot faster than normal for no reason (it’s what lets you hit BKS); then you need to drift mid-air (press right+R I think) so that you align yourself before landing, when landing do a hop to the right and then drift to the left, the mid-air drift and hop to the right help you get the alignment to charge the MT for lap 1 (I do it lap 2 and 3 too)
then just take the coins while staying as tight as possible, do the right turn entering it wide and exiting it tight, release the SMT late so that your hop tech speed gets transferred into the trick on the mole (lap 1 only)
then simply stay tight and do your MTs, be mindful of the muddy water which makes you go a lot wider

in summary, key points of the track:
shroomspot: you need to enter it at the sweet spot that’ll let you drive over the grass without slowing down
underwater turn: you need your bottom-right wheel to stick to the road, air time costs a lot of time (to avoid it you need a certain trajectory, entering the turn tightly so that you go over the brown road)
after underwater turn: “mystery boost”, it’s literally luck based and saves more than ″100 each time
for lap 1 moles: release your SMT late, so that your hop tech speed will transfer into the mole trick

that’s all, a guy told me he saved a lot on his PR just from the underwater turn tip, so I thought this might help

I just have a question on this. You mean the D-pad on the gamepad, right?

And is using the d-pad always *at least* better (or equal) in most courses? Or just ones where you need very tight turns in some spots.

I’ve only needed DPad on DP3 and WP, but I don’t play many tracks anyway

I do mean WU GPad DPad, but all DPads are the same anyway

Alright, thanks. I was just confused because it seemed like someone was exclusively talking about the wii-mote d-pad whenever they mentioned the d-pad at one point... I thought they all worked the same but was just clarifying.

I feel like the d-pad helps turn tightly enough in that one anti-gravity hairpin turn in MKS, but idk.

i am by no means even remotely good at this course but i have found the underwater uturn, i seem to go faster if i hit the rise at an angle that keeps my wheels somewhat on the ground. You get an assisted turn from the up rise on the turn and you go super fast. Any time under 1:20 is pretty easy for any one that's good at this game.

edit. ignore this alaktron covered it. This is imo the biggest timesaver. got me from 1:23 to 1:20

Wrong. GamePad turns wider than Wii controller when NOT drifting, but sharper when drifting. (Difference for drifting is tiny unless you are on slippery road.)

I don’t believe that

there is actually a logic behind DPad turning tighter than stick, and that is the fact that “right” is fully right on a Dpad, but on a stick you have a lot of possible positions, and “fully right” can be “blocked” by the plastic surrounding it, so it makes sense for a stick without much mobility to turn less; for a DPad it doesn’t

IIRC, nunchuck stick is as good as GamePad DPad.
You can test it yourself. For non-drift just play a level you haven't TT'd much and make a ghost that holds right/left with one then try the other while racing the ghost. For drift, find a level with a large enough space to drift in circles, and change controls mid-race.

I never said that nunchuck stick wasn’t as good as DPad, that’s what I’d expect it to be

the plastic differs from controller to controller, sticks aren’t all the same

Thanks for the tips - this is exactly what this site could benefit from having more of.  I'll keep it in mind when I go back to DP3.

Does it matter which Kart we use? (I use Circuit Special and the WR uses Pipe Frame)  Undecided
