I've noticed on the MK8 PP that the submit option still doesn't take you anywhere, and that there still isn't any standerds yet...is anyone even working on those things...?

The "submit" option is referring to a completely new, overhauled version of the players' page that I'm programming. It will have a submission form that allows players to log in and submit times for any track. I plan on having it ready sometime in 2017. For more info, check out here: http://www.mariokart64.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1459206065

As for the standards, I have no clue. Usually the top players create the standards, but they seem to be inactive... I'm hoping we can get something going soon, too.

It's far too easy to forget what it's like to be a kid. But one secret to happiness is to be able to pick out links to our childhood in the mundanities of adult life. That's why I love Mario Kart. Whether I'm imagining wading through frosting in Sweet Sweet Canyon to take a bite of that giant donut, or picturing myself, shrunken down, making my way through Waluigi's pinball machine, there's something rejuvenating about the game that provides a nice reminiscence of the halcyon days gone by.

News is finally updated, as I got my updating account just now. If you don't see it, try refreshing the page. I plan on doing the news more regularly (let's see how that turns out Tongue )

I don't play mk8 but I've been looking at all the mk pages and noticed some of them have trouble updating news regularly. Has anyone thought of or tried to create an automatic news updater? It is definetly feasible. I've done something similar (but not on this scale) I would be willing to give it a try. I see a new player's page is under construction, does it have this feature? Or will the news section be replaced with something else entirely?

While an automatic news updater is technically possible, I'm against it. It's nice to see opinions and comments based on people's achievements. Otherwise, the news just becomes a stats page in paragraph form.

The new players' page doesn't yet have a news feature; that's one of the last things I'll implement. My plan with that is to try and provide some features for making writing the news easier. Perhaps I could display a list of the players who were active along with their AF difference and link to profiles below the news entry box; also, I could show all the new site records. Doing stuff like that, to make writing the news quicker, is what I believe to be the best solution.

I've discovered that writing the news takes a long time as it is. That's the reason I haven't written it in a couple weeks. I've been quite busy with other things, including exams, beginning a new job, updating the Canadian top 10s on MKBoards, updating the Players' Page times, and doing programming work (including the new players' page). I'll do the news as soon as I find the time Smiley

I see what you mean about it being just a stats page in paragraph form but a really advanced updater could have a large phrase bank and writes in a way that seems more 'human', forming believable paragraphs and not just churning out numbers. If everyone's busy and don't have the time to write the news for one week, I think a automatic news writer would come in handy just for those occasions.

I'm looking forward to the new player's page, do you still need beta testers?

Even with a phrase bank, a computer can't fully undertstand the context of the player's accomplishments like a human can. People can have a sense of the details that are going on.

Also, such a bank of words and phrases would have to be enormous to make it look believably human. There's so many things a human could say, it's not just about times and stats. Just look at all the different things that have been said in all the news entries so far, and what could be said. It's impractical to spend the time entering in the hundreds of thousands (or more) of possible phrases.

I still believe the best way to deal with this is to provide a list of stats below the box where the news is entered into. This makes reference much quicker than navigating the site.

And to answer your question, at the moment, we don't need any new beta testers. We will likely in the future, though, if you ever want to.

Feel free to PM me if you want to discuss anything. I can get your skype via PM if you're interested, as well. Smiley

Why did no one report the new site champions to a site admin? Diogo is still the site champ on the past champions page.  Smiley Could we still add all the other past champions and the estimated dates?

I've notified Alex Penev with the new (estimated) dates. I used http://www.mariokart64.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1444006019 as reference, and had to estimate one date (the last time Kasper became champ) by looking at the submissions thread from that time.

I'm currently prioritizing working on the new MK8 PP rather than writing the news. This is also why Mick has been doing the times updates rather than myself. The new PP is coming along nicely and hopefully we'll have it ready soon!  Smiley

Thanks very much for the news update. I have been taking a break from news updating and times updating (Mick is helping with the latter) to focus on bringing the new MK8 Players' Page hopefully by the end of the month!

I have a few comments/suggestions abuot the new site. First, it seems pretty slow. I realize that this may not be something you can do much about, but it's something to keep in mind for future improvements. (Also it may be extra slow at the moment due to large loads at launch?)

Second, the charts page gives no indication that it is loading a new page of times when I click an arrow.
(E.g. loading the top 51-100 times) And third, there is a blue square around the arrow after I click it, which I find to be very out of place.

Fourth, when I clicked on the course title next to one of my times on my profile page, it took me to the correct page for that time and highlighted it; I think that it should also automatically scroll to it.
Fifth, I think it would be nice to have tool-tips that appear when hovering over certain elements, such as the squares around a time's rank which indicate a country record.

The site appears to be down right now, so I can't test out anything else at the moment.
Keep up the good work, though! This site looks quite promising as an upgrade to the previous site.

Site's back up, so here are some more comments:

6) It seems very weird to have the controls filters not be able to filter out times which have nothing set. Perhaps all times should default to "don't remember"?

7) If the "next page" arrow on a course chart is clicked twice, (or any combination of multiple clicks of the next/previous page buttons) all intermediate pages are loaded and displayed. Cancelling the loading or display of pages which the user is not trying to view would be a good idea, in my opinion.

8) Caching pages would also be nice. So if the user goes to page 2 and then returns to page 1, he doesn't have to re-load it.

9) Site rules say "You may not submit times that use glitches or substantial shortcuts not intended by the developers." Why? Will this change in the future? Will the site support separate categories for SC / non-SC?

Thank you for your suggestions Suuper! I'll give my comments:

1. The site has been pretty slow at launch and down a lot of the time, because of large loads and memory issues on the server. Over the past hour or two, I've notices faster loads and no more crashes, so I think this may just be because of hype. I'm going to wait before taking any action here, just to make sure this isn't a just-at-launch thing.

2. I could add a loading icon that spins as the pages are loading. However, since this is a pretty minor issue, it will stay how it is for a while yet, while I work on some last-minute changes in anticipation of MK8DX.

3. This seems to be a chrome-specific case. When I use Firefox, I don't get this. I'm not sure how I can fix this, but I'll try when I get a chance.

4. Good idea, I can try to do this when I get a chance as well.

5. Tooltips for SR/Country Champion/Continental Champion are in place. You have to hover for a second or two. My guess is you weren't hovering long enough.

6. I'm not sure exactly what you mean. If you click the question mark box so it's no longer highlighted in blue, all times with nothing set will be removed from the charts. You can also remove times set with joystick, for example, by clicking the joystick icon (the left-most one) so it's no longer blue. Also, all times that were carried over from the old site have "don't remember" set as the controller. However, new times default to whatever controller is set as the default controller in that user's preferences.

7. Good point, I can see what I can do about this.

8. Another fair point, I guess I have a lot of things that could be improved!

9. This is to make sure that if an SC is discovered, people cannot submit it until I make the SC charts. So yes, if needed, I will add SC charts. This way, we won't be wondering which of the existing times are non-SC or SC if glitches/SCs are discovered (either in MK8 or MK8DX). If this is the case, I will change the site rules to reflect this.

Thanks for the reply.

For #2, I wouldn't call it "pretty minor", but I can agree ensuring MK8D is ready at launch is more important, so yeah go for that. Also to expand on this, there also should be a loading indicator when changing the country filter.

For #5 and 6, I just went back and they are now behaving as you say. This is strange, since I am quite certain that I was doing it right and the site was just messing up. (I was able to filter out D-pad or control-stick times earlier, but got nothing from unchecking the dont remember option, and I was able to get tool tips on other elements.)

Also another thing I noticed while re-testing: The selected controller filters are reset when you change courses. I feel like it should keep them, and also that it should not refresh the entire page, in order to be consistent with the filter options and page selection.

Hello, i will probably need help with a few things, but atm i only need to ask one question, can you play mk8 delux competitively if you don't buy an actual cartridge for it and instead get it on the nintendo switch eshop? or does that not make a difference?
