Hey guys, please PM me if you'd like to help with times updates or news updates.

Only 4 MK8 players have access to write news (and I'm not sure if one of them is real). JCop is one and he did a super job with the update yesterday, but he may want some help.

I don't know who is doing what or who is trustworthy and responsible.  Cheesy

I first wanted to address warm thanks to the people who updated the site while I was away for this long.

Some of you may have already guessed, but as you could see with this past month, I am not anymore able to reliably update times on the site, and have decided to call it quits.

I had originally planned to "pass the hand" gradually, for the end of this year, but quite obviously this situation cannot last much longer.

Even though I was never supposed to be the main updater to begin with, serving initially as a substitute for others, I felt like the well-being and the responsability of the site was mostly onto me and that I had to offer the best service to the players. So it makes me feel sad and sorry that the PP ended up in limbo solely because of my absence, but due to unforeseen circumstances I lost both the time and the will to get onto the Internet recently.

In the following week, I will try to make sure there are enough updaters around for the months to come, at least until the new site is ready (I will get back to this eventually, I ought to bring it onto completion no matter when), but don't expect to see me around here much for some more weeks at least. I heard Darren is quite dedicated to his new job though, so hopefully the site will be fine again for some days.

Thank you for your understanding.

Are there any of the current updaters who have a YahooGroups account? Some people still only use YG, and the messages from there still have to be updated.

I can make anyone a moderator of the MK8 YG so that the messages sent can be approved and then updated. PM me or Jonesy if anyone currently updating, or somebody else interested in updating with a YG account, wants access (I'll also explain how to proceed next of course).

I am wondering whatever happened to the news? It's been two months since the last news update (which in turn was a very late update). Is there really nobody able to write news at this time?

Fortunately the times are being updated regularly, but I really think the news should be sorted out sooner rather than later.

I think this page definitely needs a new news updater. Not only has it been the last few months, it's been the game has been launched since the quality of news updates has just not been that great. On every single other players page, the news writer goes over every active player. I've played relatively consistently since the game has been launched and I think I haven't been mentioned in a news update since July of 2014. The news quality has just been bad. One update was literally just listing the top 10. I appreciate that JCop has been helpful and at least tried to give us some news, but we need to reach out ourselves to find one or a few people who will be dedicated to writing news - at least every other week if not every week. I understand there's a lot of people to cover, but even back when I wrote for the MK7 page we still mentioned anyone and absolutely everyone who sent in 1 new PR, even if they lost AF.

Make a news announcement that we're looking for a few news writers I think. Make sure they know how to check the Players on the site by Activity as well also so they can mention everyone who plays. We need to find someone ourselves though otherwise I don't think we're going to get any people to do the job out of just coming here to volunteer, because not many people read threads like these.

This isn't little league where everybody gets a trophy just for participating.  I'm a full time college student with a full time job and an active social life, I'm not gonna make news writing take longer than it has to just because somebody sent in 1 PR and thinks the whole site should know about it.

You're referring to the first update I made after the 2nd DLC pack came out.  When I do an update, I compare everybody's current rank with their rank from the previous update.  The charts started over from scratch when the DLC came out, so nobody had a previous rank to compare to.  I gave the top 10 some recognition so that something would be written, and then used that as a starting point for future updates.  I though I had made that clear.  Apparently not.

I'm in favor of having a different updater.  It sucks writing the news.  You think it sucks not getting recognition for sending in a few PRs?  It's even worse not getting any recognition for the amount of time I spent doing this for over a year when I never had a whole lot of free time to begin with.  I offered to do it because only two other people showed interest initially, and they both backed out almost immediately.  Basically you guys got to choose between putting up with my way of doing it or not having it done at all.

I'm not trying to sound like a dick, and I know you weren't either, I just wanted to share my thoughts on your post.  I know I've been inactive for far too long and I'm sorry for that, but I lost motivation a long time ago.

I get it completely, and I'm not trying to sound like a dick either so my bad.

I wrote for the 7 page for about a year so I know how long some updates took, some took me well over 5 hours of combined time I'd say, and once you have the actual writing finished you have to color it all, etc, so I understand that news could just not be possible for a busy college student. I am in the same boat now with college and it's taken up a lot more time than last year. I would volunteer to help but I don't believe I can do a good job with it right now.

It's not your fault, since nobody else has stepped up either, but it is a problem however. There were a few updates where I had actually played TT for over 10 hours that week, where news didn't cover me personally, and I know it's the same with a lot of other people too. Also because the joining rate keeps going up, it becomes relatively difficult to have an overall AF cut for anyone the longer the news is put off. The issue is not you obviously, it's just we have a workload that's higher than what we can give right now. It's reasonable, especially for a single person. This is why we need to recruit some more people to write.

I think we should have more than one writer also. The more the news is put off, the more work that has to be done since the content to write about just stacks up. There was a period on MK7 where nothing had been written for about 3 months, and as a result between me and 2 others we had a huge amount to cover. If we could get 2 or 3 people to alternate for weekly updates, the updates wouldn't be too quick and they'd have break weeks, so I think it'd be much more manageable. As I suggested before, I think we should go out and recruit. Maybe I'll do a few also if there are other people helping to write too.

We really need to do something about hackers ruining the WW top 10. Its not fair to the players who have to move down 1 or more spots just because of the selfish hackers  Sad.

For some reason the AF scores on the AF charts and the profile pages differ. For example my score on the rankings is 215.1040 AF but it says 214.7917 on my profile page (I'm pretty sure the latter is correct). Total times and PRSR seem to not be affected. Any explanation for this?

Apologies for the fact that there hasn't been an update for quite a while, it's something I normally just tend to avoid and I am very disappointed in myself. Matt didn't do anything since he was on.vacation and he wanted be to do some updates but I just didn't really care.

If I don't update tomorrow you can flame me all I want, I deserve it tbh

Looks like there is a player called "Simon Shack" and another called "Simon/Shack". Assuming they are both the same player, their profiles should be merged.

On mkw and mk7 you can sort your times on 'Rank' or 'Date'. mk8 should have it too imo

Very interesting. I wasn't aware you could do that on the other games.

I was considering making that a feature of the new players' page I'm working on, but decided to put that effort to the side, since it wasn't necessary, and I want to get the site done by MK9's release. Now that I know this is possible in some of the other PPs, I may add this to the new MK8 site.

I use it all the time. Like when I want to decide what track I will play next, I always look up what my oldest PR's and my worst ranked times are.
It's also very handy for the news writers because when you are writing something about a player, you can quickly look up the new times he submitted since the last news and how many.
Alex has the code for this feature and I think it's not hard to add it to the current site. I don't know if it's compatible with the new site.

And about the new site:
Another feature that news writers use is the possibility to sort 'Players A-Z' on activity. This is used to list up all the active players for the news. So I think it would be best that this possibility is also included in the new site.

And one thing that I am missing on the current site is the possibility to look up the AF rankings from the past, like the 'WR Snapshot' feature on mkwrs. I don't know what you guys think of that idea, but personally I would love to look up older rankings. I would also use it to see what my own rank was at a certain date.

Anyway, I think the new site will be great. I will start TT'ing MK8 myself when the site is up, so I can experience it. Yeah I really long for it, lol. Thanks Jazzy  Wink

It can be added to the current site, but no, I wouldn't imagine any of the old code is compatible  Sad It has to be re-written from scratch. I can definitely add this feature though.

This is already possible in the new site. It's also going to be possible to sort he players list by join date (useful for the "New Players" section of the news).

This is lower priority on the list. While it will be possible to look up old, individual PRs (I already made that feature), AF history may or may not be in the initial release of the site. However, I'm going to make the database store AF history, right from the start -- because ranking history is a feature I'd like to add at some point.

Unfortunately, the player ラサヤ Ζα€ will need to have his name on his profile changed to "Zac" (with quotes), or another acceptable name, as the Japanese characters and Euro sign will not be accepted into the database for the new version of the players' page I am making. Sorry for this, but it will need to be done sooner rather than later. Thanks.
