Just for reference, the wheel icon appears if you use motion controls (including Wii U GamePad's gyroscope mode) during at least 80% of the run. It doesn't matter where the button controls part ( <20% ) is located (beginning/middle/end of the run) and you can split it into several parts.

You can check that easily by doing a ~1:40 run (= 100 seconds) and see what happens when you spend 18~19 and 21~22 seconds with button controls.

I did mention it in my Miiverse comment for the time, but I guess it's harder to find since I fell out of the WW top 10.
