What does it take to get a WR?

Hello everyone, I just have 1 question. What does it truely take to get a WR? I mean what do you need to do? Since MK7, I've always wanted a WR since I topped 10'ed for Maple Treeway, but I worked so hard then and never got one, not even one- I've been close, but that doesnt count. Same thing goes for Thwomp Ruins. It's like every time I beat my own time, there's a new WR. What am I doing wrong? I mean I work hard, practice, rage, study the WR ghosts, invent my own strats that solely help me, everything. I kinda sorta need help  Undecided

I have asked the same question. It was answered.

Basically just keep practicing and never give up.

A combination of dedication, which means hours invested, and natural talent.

It's the same in all realms of life. Just look at education. Some people can get top grades pretty effortlessly, others have to work hard just to pass exams. People contend it's mainly down to work ethic, but in reality at least half of it is down to natural ability.

Taken from the MKDD-opedia on the MKDD Players' Page:

The three keywords

I'll let you in on the big secret. There are three keywords that summarize how you can improve your times. They are: practice, practice and practice.
OK, that was a bit lame. But seriously, that's all there is to it. Practice and you will improve. And over time, those seconds will disappear.

Three more keywords

(No, really three this time)
Practice. For this, you need three things:

Time

Well duh. Of course you need time. To give you an idea: to reach top 100 or so, it takes the average noob several months, playing on average at least a few hours per week. You need to be obsessed, and quite frankly, a little bit crazy.

Motivation

You need the time, but also the motivation to invest it into Mario Kart. It can be hard, especially when progress is becoming slow. The competition on the site is a big motivator, but also the community itself, on the message board for example, can give the motivation you need to get back to your GameCube Wii U and destroy your PRs. (The strikethrough on GameCube was intentional to make it fit with MK8 by putting Wii U instead btw)

Perseverance

Make no mistake; this game can be frustrating, nerve-racking, tormenting, almost as if it has a mind of its own, set out to make you suffer. You need perseverance to keep at it, even after many failed attempts, to go on until you get that PR. But when you do, it's a feeling like no other.

That's pretty much all there is to it really. As long as you follow through with those 3 things, you'll eventually become good enough to have a good shot at getting that WR, even if your progress isn't as fast as you want it to be (that's what I meant by "eventually"). If "No pain, no gain" wasn't such a clichéd phrase, that's what I'd definitely use to describe what's needed to get a WR, especially if you aren't naturally talented.

I’ll tell you how I just got my recent DP3 WR

I played from around 9pm to 1:30am non-stop

I honestly do not believe I have talent, all of my accomplishments have come from hard dedication; but talent certainly exists and if you have it it makes everything that much easier

I do play it- a lot. But now, its mostly rage and rage. I always think that Im not good enough, which I might not be. I am most certainly capable of the Thwomp Ruins WR, I know I can do it. Same with Treeway. I came so close on Treeway, played nonstop- literally. Skipped school, didnt do homework, everything. I just.... well.. confidence is a big problem for me. When I mess up, it makes me feel worse about myself, especially after looking at the WR. Sometimes I think about quitting. I mean all Im asking is for one lol and you see Alexony getting a WR almost everyday. I mean Im sure you guys think Im capable, I just cant do it Sad. But that doesnt stop me from trying. In fact, the number one thing I want is a WR, but I dunno if I'll get it. (By the way, thanks for the answers)

Since you can watch ghosts this may not mean a whole lot, but it's an often-overlooked thing: be clever, use strategies.
Sometimes just noticing something new does the trick.
But almost always, you have to learn those things that can't be easily seen from a ghost. Experiment. Try slightly different ways of doing things, especially if you don't know how it works. Much of this can come from plain practice, but not a soon as it might otherwise.

An example of something you can't learn from ghosts: GamePad's DPad is superior to its stick. Why? Because 1) softdrifting becomes uber-easy and 2) for no apparent reason, it turns slightly sharper.

But as people already said, practice. I often don't even know what I did better when I improve, yet I keep doing whatever it is consistently once I get there. This is the one thing I lack. I play on average maybe 1 hour a day since the game's release so far, and never played a lot of the previous games either.

I like this thread.

But yeah, if you're gonna aim for a WR in this game... act fast.  When this game is 5 years old, it's gonna be a hell of a lot harder to get a WR.

raging and bringing yourself down won’t help you at all

with most play sessions where I get a WR I have multiple fails where I’d just want to go kill myself, but unless you stay calm you’ll never hit the PR in the next attempts

4 days ago, I failed a DP3 ″5xx WR by hitting the wall of the finish line pole’s, not triggering the ending. I wanted to die, but I tried to stay calm and later on hit a ″715 WR. then a Jap beat me with ″618, and now, 4 days after a ″5xx WR fail, I hit a ″611 which is the current WR. 4 days ago I failed a run in the worst possible way which would still beat today’s WR, but that’s just how it is

I do hate MK8 and think it’s a piece of shit of a game though, so I wouldn’t bother with trying to WR much on it

I just want to caution that if you sometimes try too hard you can really hurt yourself mentally and feel very much worse off. I remember six years ago TTing as a young twelve year old on MKWii, raging at trying to improve my regional top 10 on rBC3 and failing the sc time after time again. I realize now it helps to take a break every once in a while doing something else, whether it be going outside or even just doing WWs. Just keep trying every so often, but also play in moderation. Skipping school or possibly deteriorating your health is never something you want risk.

To get a WR,as everyone said, you need time, motivation, and perseverance. But personally I didn't even need the 3rd point. I'm not that perseverant anymore,I can't play 1 track during more than a week,I feel like if I'm focused on 1 track during a looong time I'd probably lose my lines on others or even my item gestion.

To get a WR too,I was playing around 8hrs per day, even when I was nervous,I was taking risks, more than without nerves, just because I really wanted to be sure that I got it,except in some cases where I didn't see it coming. It didn't seem to be that good ( MP, rDKP ) or I was just way too nervous and thought I actually failed a part at the last 2 seconds ( rLR ). However,I never really raged, only RR7 makes me really mad.

To get a WR too, when I have time, I play without motivation, playing while being annoyed, but I somehow still get a PR,it just depends of how I play against my ghost.

But after I get a WR,I'm just like " fuckyea " and that's clearly it. Not crying or something, just saying a little yeah, and I post the time. I also hate arrogance or try to help if I have a WR or if I am pretty good in general at this track,I'm just supporting,or trying to give tips.

You also said that you didn't get the rMT WR,but I'm actually pretty sure you still have less than 2000hrs on MK7,unlike me,I have around 5850hrs now. Really,I'm not talented at all. I just always think there's a ton of players better than me,that will beat me,even if I have a WR.

I hope you will get the TR WR one day, because  everyone deserves to get at least 1 WR once. no matter the game and the date. a WR is a WR. Wink

Learn to overcome the nerves. They're a bitch. If you hesitate or doubt yourself on a hard part, even for a split second, you will fail.

I try to get at least 1 WR per game, but so far I've been failing in MK8. Sad  Maybe I have a disadvantage because it's too similar to MK7.  Marv, Mick, and Alexony are doing well in MK8 and they're good at MK7, but I'm already out of the top 50 in MK7.  Also the fact that some people got the game early (and I didn't) made it even harder.

I personnally find MK8 really different to MK7. I mean I have a lot more difficulties to handle it and understand the mechanics of the game.

Anyway, I know your feel Tyler. I've been so close from rMG WR during a long time, it was really frustrating. I can't give you any advice, but people answered well above.

Well, I kinda exaggerated about skipping and that stuff, I was just a little upset. But right now, I'm playing other tracks, and I think I can top 10 another track. I might just have to take a brake from TR

Experience is the only way to get WRs. Just play for hundreds and hundreds of hours until you understand perfectly the mechanics of the game, and you'll enventually get one. If you don't, then just keep playing for hundreds of hours again, this is how it works. What I'm saying is a bit exagerated for MK8 since WRs are far from optimal, but in a few years this is what you'll have to do to get them.

I don't think so, I barely played MK7 and have taken reasonably to MK8 but I think that's just because my approach is about understanding the mechanics and where the time is lost/gained. I might write a thread to try to help people understand some of the tech because a lot of people are having problems.

I've been trying to do the same. (Getting a WR record on TR. My favorite.) All I do is try to PR at least once a day no matter how small. Today mine was -0.013 but at least it shows I can duplicate my time. I just found a thread on here today that explains mechanics that allows you to do strats like the gold MT just b4 the shortcut part. I know what you're thinking. I don't get how people like JaK are able to do so well on every track. (Probably loads of play time.) Don't give up and good luck! Cheesy (btw if you see me in the records or Miiverse, I'm "The Quick")

Sum it up in three words: practice and motivation. (yes, I counted 'and' as a word because it is)

You have to practice to improve, and be motivated to reach a goal. That's how I held on to a Women's World Record for Rainbow Road before Sofie took it from me :p And it's the same strategy I'll use for GBA Mario Circuit c:
