can someone teach me how to do it? download my 1′16″771 DP3 time, see if you can gain speed on me at the end of lap 1 after the hop tech

the Jap with WR saves so much time compared to me there, overall I’m losing like ″500 just because of it, I could easily hit 1′15″ if I knew how to do it properly

I’ve tried using his same setup, and I’ve tried copying his movements while doing the hop tech, but to no avail, I’m always slower

Seems to me that the Japanese player hops left-right for five hops, then continues hopping neutral. I'm still not really sure myself when five left-right hops are faster. On some instances, it way faster than four hops (rTTC and rRRy for example), but other times you lose like .5 trying to do it, even if the track is straight. One of the most retarded techniques I've ever seen in a MK game.

Getting in the hops as quickly as possible is really the only advice I can give. Hoping someone better can give a definitive answer.

left/right hops until the SMT boost is gone + neutral hopping until you go back to normal speed is the best way to do hop tech. I didn't watch your run, so I don't know if you're doing anything wrong.

This is what I understood when I played that game :

During the boost do not neutral hop, try to keep your line using only right and left hops (it can be 2 right hops in a row, just be sure to always hold a direction when you hop).

When the boost is over, only do neutral hops, otherwise you'll just end up losing time.

Last things (even if obvious), you want to reduce contact with the road as much as possible, which means the quickest you hop after landing, the fastest you'll go. I realized this was especially true with the neutral hops after the boost, if you time them badly (ie you don't execute one of them fast enough) they won't be effective at all.

One comment though: I have absolutely no idea for how long you can neutral hop after the boost effect without losing time.

This may be incorrect, but so far I can't understand the tech better.

have you guys tried to race the Jap? he gains ″100 on me on lap 1 finish

edit: nope, still absolutely no success, it’s the exact same as neutral hopping

I'm having the exact same problem on rDKJ lol (not being able to make the hops really quick), I always seem to have a bit more air/cooldown time in between the hops when I try them compared to other ghosts I've seen on the Top 10. The only advice I could give is to try and perfect the timing for them I guess (i.e. hop the very moment you touch the ground).

As the mini turbo wears off, on your final hop of the "set" make sure you don't press a direction on its own. That is, press R then the direction the air and then let go. That way when you land you can neutral hop and maintain the boost speed somewhat.

Does anyone also have some sort of answer to the perfect hop tech for a blue mt? Every time I double hop on BDD (the two blue mts at the circle), I lose .100-.200 every time against the WR. I tried releasing the mt at multiple different intervals, but nothing.

maybe this is what I need… that’s what the Jap does lap 1

I’ve found that: my normal left-left-right-neutral hops technique is slow probably when I start neutral hopping while in the boost, but at the end I keep all of my speed

while doing left-left-right-right-left-neutral, I seemed to keep my speed up while boosting, but at the end of it I lost all of the speed when simply driving forward, the same happened with left-right-left-right-left-neutral I think

if I can’t learn to do this shit properly I’ll quit the game…

^It's already pissing me off how complicated it is.

I'm not really good enough to test these things, but I'm pretty sure you want to avoid holding left/right while on the ground. You may also want to delay your hopping just enough for the boost to get you up to speed.

Also, which controller are you using? GamePad and Wii controller (no nunchuck) are different. And DPad is the best way to go from my experience.

Slightly unrelated, but I have a noob question about the hops. I started playing yesterday and I curiouslt y tried this tech on many parts, but it doesn't seem to work everywhere. What does this depend on?

It's pretty area specific. The general rule is that it works uphill and not downhill, but there are certain exceptions to this (doesn't work on MKS downhill in anti-gravity, but does on SGF downhill bridge in anti-gravity). It's best to just learn where it does and doesn't work from the WR videos. If it's a place that specifically doesn't work then you'll notice immediately, it'll kill your speed (Electrodome start/finish).

I don't think you've realised that a turning hop is faster than a neautral hop; you're only doing three turning hops  on the final straight and then going straight into neutral hops, when you have five to work with within the mini turbo. Neutral hopping is only used (on flat) to maintain the speed gained from the turning hops i.e. spend less time touching the ground and so slow down to the base speed slower. All the Jap player is doing is an extra turning hop on the final straight.

you don’t understand… try racing the Jap, try racing me, tell me your results…

if I do it the Jap’s way, I lose all my speed when the SMT is over, if I do it my way, I lose speed during the SMT, but I keep it after the SMT runs out

the Jap keeps his max speed both while SMTing and after it runs out, I always lose time either while boosting or after it runs out depending on what hop strategy I use, even copying his I just lose all of my speed when the SMT boost runs out

actually try racing against the ghosts, if you get positive results I’ll try again what you’re saying for the 100th time

I can do it– the problem is MY SPEED WHEN DOING IT doesn’t match the Jap’s speed

can you play against the ghosts yourself or is that too hard?

but anyway yes, I know that on the first bridge my hop tech is stronger than the Jap, it’s just at the last turn that I don’t understand it, no matter how I do it

after some more practice I can go slightly faster with left-right-left-right-left-neutral-neutralalign than left-left-rightalign-neutral-neutral-neutral, but it’s still nowhere near as fast as what the Jap is doing

I'm shit at this course so I can't keep up enough to test vs you guys, maybe I'll get to that stage at some point... Only other thing I can think of is it being something to do with releasing the MT while still on the "muddy" part as opposed to the "sandy" edge.  Undecided

after more testing I got back to the starting point, even the left-right seems to be slow for me

also I noticed that most WRs don’t do the hop tech after startboost, the SA WR is a good ghost to practice it with
