It comes down to what you're used to and what, for whatever reason, feels most comfortable to you, I think. There are some games I absolutely can't play without clawing, regardless of how hard I try.

In the situation you described, you can for example use the index to push it to the right and the thumb to push it to the left.

I guess so. It's kind of like a rolling movement though. The only time my thumb is resting in the circle is when the stick is neutral.

How do you do for fire-hopping ?
Isn't it very hard to fastly left-right-left-right when using the joystick this way ?

Personally, I'm still searching the best way for mastering both fire-hopping and softdrifing... Might reconsider D-pad.

I do this for bunny hopping as well. It's really not much different than dash dancing in Super Smash Bros Melee.
