I went through the MK7 thread about the aborted MK7Records channel to gather some insights:

           TITLE:

Despite the fact that YouTube allows up to 100 characters in video titles, it will cut off the title on multiple places when it's too long, including video suggestions/ video endscreen/ video list on channel page/ interface on smartphones, consoles and other devices.
Many uploaders used to put the game's abbreviation between brackets right at the beginning but because of the aforementioned reason I think it's not necessary.





Title is very important for search engine optimization purposes and [MK8] is not ideal in that case as much more people will be typing “mario kart 8” and “world record” than “mk8” and “wr”. If MK8Records eventually hosts videos that are not World Records, it may be better to put it before Mario Kart 8 so that it's still a bit visible. Here are some suggestions (the 2 first ones seem better imo):

           DESCRIPTION:

By default YouTube will only show the 5 first lines so the most important information must be located there; the rest will be visible upon clicking “Show more”.



- Date when the WR was set, date when the WR was beaten, duration (not sure if in days like on Cole's website, or in years+months+days)
- Character/vehicle combination (even if visible in the video, it's still useful for performing searches)
- Lap times (same reason as above)

- Comment from MK8Records that gives the player's nickname, the other nicknames he may be known for (in case the player used a different name like THEGADTIME), his nationality, notable facts

- Player's comment on his run

A few players put their shrooms/coin counter per lap (ex. 1-1-1 / 7-1-0) but I am not sure if it is useful.
Some people complained about the use of special characters but I believe a mere bullet here or an arrow there can only improve readability of the information. Please give your opinion on what you feel about this.

Can't you put Mario Kart 8 in the tags section? And leave the abbreviation. Since the search engine checks tags too. Having the game abbreviation at the beginning is useful for players who don't already know about the channel.
Though it depends on where you want to put the game name. Abbreviation if at front. Full text if at end.
But either way, you'll probably want to include the other choice in the tags for the video.

It may be possible to attract new players in the community from WR videos on YouTube, that's why as Ebil suggested the popular keyword will be spelled in full at the end of the title, and the terms known by the community will be put in tags for efficient searches (such as “mk8 wr bc” for Bowser's Castle WR in MK8).

^ YouTube will also search in the description. It has a low priority compared with title & tags, but in that case we're talking about game-specific elements that not much people will type, so there's no need to customize tags in each video for that purpose I believe, it's a loss of time.
For example type “mk7 wr beast glider” in the search bar and you'll find multiple TT videos with “Beast Glider” somewhere in the description.

The only thing that needs to be added manually for each video is indeed the track abbreviation as it doesn't appear anywhere else (and can be added quickly).

The header of the main channel page can only contain 1 external link. Should we put the MK8 Players' Page, the MK8 PP forum, Cole's website…?

Well, in our case it's not just a car setup but a combination of a chassis, tires, glider *and* character as all 4 will be put in the same line.
Ultimately, what matters is that it's the word most people use, while setup will be in the tags, just like Mario Kart 8 is in the title while mk8 is in the tags.
