Though I guess mario's head blocking part of the road opens for the possibility that it is a split road somehow... Just looks alot like it extends to upside down later on the track to me heh.

Actually you're right. Mario and Peach are going the wrong way ! Here's older artwork showing the same part of the track (flip your monitor upside-down to get it) :

I wonder if they will bother fixing this before the release... I guess not many people are going to see this detail anyway.
