I assume it wasn't cheddar cheese. "Cheddar makes it taste better" indeed. I bet you wouldn't have griped if it was pepper jack cheese either.
People around here don't have 100 types of cheeses like you folks do. There's cheddar, mozzarella, pepper jack, and whatever McDonald's puts on a Big Mac.
Gyros, you say... we've heard of it, but nobody I know eats those. The picture I got when I Googled "Gyro" looked pretty good though. Reminds me of Chalupas (a Mexican dish).
Greek/Turkish/Middle Eastern food just isn't really eaten in Mississippi. Maybe other parts of the USA are different though. But just about all ethnic food here is either Mexican or Chinese (occasionally Japanese, but we lump all Asian cuisines together anyway). Some supermarkets have a very small section devoted to Indian foods, which I don't find bad at all. (Anyone had a chickpea curry?)
I'm about to have hot dogs with chili and cheddar cheese.
