Nintendo UK invited us to try out Mario Kart 8
09/30/13 at 02:04:34

Hello,

In between running some retro tournaments on various platforms this weekend at Eurogamer Expo in London, Nintendo UK were exhibiting all their new upcoming releases. Mario Kart 8 was on display with a massive queue for visitors to have a try. Luckily we didnt have to do that as Nintendo UK kindly invited Leyla and I up for a quick go on the game and be interviewed on our opinions and thoughts about the it plus some background stuff on our SMK activity etc.

Anyway some general points and thoughts so far on Mario Kart 8...

- As this was a demo version, we only got to play 3 tracks and i think it was only 2 laps on each.

- All characters were available but i think they all had fixed car types or bike types (perhaps you can choose a vehicle in the real thing, or unlock them, i dunno)

- Graphically, the HD touch makes it look quality, and that was probably the biggest plus point.

- The whole magnet gravity field work to make the karts go upside down a bit F-Zero / Wipeout like was an interesting addition i suppose, and playing the Ghost track and coming out side ways was funny.

- We had to use the main Wii system as the controller for player 1 and wii wheel for player 2. I pray that we can plug something in that resembles a proper game pad at least (like a GC pad for MKWii) if Time Trials are going to be done.

- I used DK and Leyla used Yoshi, so we could test the boundaries between heavy and lightweight and also get a feel for top speed. Heavy steering for DK so i got stuck sometimes on the harder tracks. The first track i went ahead well but the steering was still quite wide. Leyla found Yoshi fairly standard on controls but we can tell really on the top speed side of things.

- The MTs... erm... well i found them harder only cos it was a new game, and i had to use the wii wheel. I cant MT much better with it on MKWii so thats fair enough. But id say its somewhere similar ish to that the way it feels.

- Items, when i was in front i didnt find i was getting pummelled with skank items as much from the back. That was either down to luck or this watered down demo of the game didnt have all the items in maybe? Or perhaps they have fixed the major problem with the series and toned it down a bit. Again would need to see the finished game for this and play some more.

- Track designs - look cool. Not gona beat SMK for me but i think this will be very enjoyable for all gamers round the world and im keen to see what they have in store beyond these 3 tracks.

So in summary, i think theyve stuck with the general look and feel of the MKWii and MK7. Graphics look great in HD. No idea how Time Trial is going to go with the controls... but lets see. Looks like it will be a fun addition to the series Smiley

If we get any more information i'll let you know. Il enquire with Nintendo if i can get the video of our interview at some stage.

Lastly, out of the 3 races we done, i won the first track with clean driving. Leyla destroyed me on the other two; i blame DK's heavy steering and not knowing the tracks for that. On the mini cup final results out of 12 she was 1st and i think i landed up 4th Cheesy To be continued the next time we play Mario Kart 8!

Thanks for the report Sami. Smiley

We, French people, will probably be able to play the game at the Paris Games Week as well. Smiley (end of October - begining of November)

I don't think controllers should be much of a problem. Given what they did with MKWII I'd hope they would give tons of options to use.

I only say this because I plan on using the Wii U Pro controller.

Yeh hopefully this will be sorted out, at least the GC pad helped for MKWii.

Thanks for the report, Sami. I'll most likely play the game at the end of October, too, so I'll write my thoughts down.

It's from the 29th of October to the 3rd of November. Should be at the same place as usual : Porte de Versailles.
I'll attend on saturday definitely.
Also, go and read your PMs. Tongue

Paris Games Week invited us to try out Mario Kart
Reply #7 - 11/03/13 at 07:10:11

Hey guys!
As I said I went to the Paris Games Week yesterday and managed to play the game a couple times.

My personnal feelings :
- It should just be a matter of practise, but I found it hard to start another MT without driving into the grass, just after we released a tight SMT...

- I also found it hard to reposition yourself correctly after an MT. It actually looked much easier and faster to start an other drift.

- I tried DK with a bike and Wario with a kart, and I managed to drive inside the wagon on the second track with the moto, which I happened to fail with the kart. So bikes might still be easier after all? (to be confirmed)

- Heavy weight character still seem faster than light weight characters

- I noticed snaking was extremely easy to do but it might, once again, be slower than straight-driving. (that's an other thing to be confirmed)

- Finally, the act of jumping on a bumper and trick on it IS faster than straight driving down the road.
Hard to explain... but let's say DK is ahead of Waluigi and is driving down the road, missing the bumper. Waluigi who uses the bumper and tricks off it, will land way in front of DK. So, using bumpers is faster.

- Delta might be slower than normal driving as well. I'm not really sure about that but I felt that I was reaching the finish line faster without using the Delta...

That's all I can say about the game strats.

Overall the game was really easy to play, the drifts seem really easy to perform and makes us drive much wider when we are under the water. So it's harder to hit a wall when you drift under the water apparently Tongue
The roads look reeeeeaaaaally wide but it's just a demo so...

Fun game to play on anyway, and easily playable with the gamepad, compared to the wiimote which didn't allow a nunchuck for the demo version. Hopefully we will be able to play MK8 with wiimote + nunchuck controller, as easily as we can play the game with the gamepad. Roll Eyes

Any questions, don't hesitate to ask of course.

I would like to know from those who tested the demo if it is still possible to hold a drift while performing a trick, like in Mario Kart Wii, because I've seen someone say that if you use button controls with the GamePad, it works the same as Mario Kart 7 i.e. the drift & trick button is the same, ZR.

I've also seen someone say you can shake the GamePad to perform a trick while using motion controls; can you do it as well while using button controls?

As far as I'm concerned, I've only used the ZR button to perform tricks (just like in MK7) and I didn't try other buttons/sticks for that as the ZR button seemed the most logical one to use.
I guess I should have...
However, we could play with the wii mote as well, so it might have been possible to drift while tricking by shaking the controler but I'm not 100% sure about that.
