CDM 2013 Photos, Videos and Memories to share
08/27/13 at 07:11:19

Hi,

Just thought i'd make this topic for the purpose of the title above. I will probably do a write up of some sort for this strange and wonderful week soon. There are many photos going up on facebook, but feel free to share some here if you wish, and your personal stories.

I just uploaded this, it wasn't part of the tournament showing the Japanese player in an exhibition NTSC Grand Prix 150cc race with Florent Lecoanet. Takashi has the fastest times on Rainbow Road of this version of 150cc, he certainly can drive well live too. It was a pleasure to meet him and we noticed how much he must have enjoyed the week. I had a nice mail back from him already saying that he got back safely and really loved the CDM, hopes to come again, and will try to see if he can find any other Japanese players to bring next time Smiley

In the meantime, enjoy this, especially the laugh at the end when Takashi and Flo thought i was taking a photo of them Cheesy

^ Wow, thanks for that.

I gotta say though, I could've done without all the flashy effects, the pulsating in particular really got on my nerves. And a lot of the photos just went by way too fast. Just a bit of constructive criticism...

...I assume that's Anna standing next to Takashi at 5:12 and 11:17? I'm guessing either she was the one who talked Takashi into coming, or was the only one who could communicate with him (since she's studying Japanese expensively and is planning another move to Japan). I'm hoping Anna will meet up with other Japanese players during her time in Japan and maybe get them to come to the CDM, linking together the Eastern and Western SMK communities. (And maybe bring the Japanese PAL cartridges so they can join PAL and practice PAL driving for the CDM. And maybe learn some new strats from them to get some of those Women's Records back from Leyla...)

Who knows, maybe someone in Japan already has a 55"xx on MC1. Robin isn't there anymore, they need a Westerner to introduce them to the fabulous English-speaking Kart world...

No i found him well over a year ago online and we communicated about CDM / Time Trial etc. I then learned of his GP successes and that was his speciality. Anna met and spoke to him for the first time at CDM. I eventually got him in touch with Matthias Boucher who sorted stuff out with him over email as he speaks Japanese pretty well (having worked there a while some years ago).

Not sure when she is going, but would be nice. Perhaps some brand new recruits. They are very spread out though. Takashi isnt from Tokyo but i know he is gona try to meet one of the Time Trialers this Autumn at an event (i dont know if that is still going ahead though). Ha Nyan is a good possibility but he lives in Fukuoka. I was glad to meet him last year.

They will all need the step down (or was it step up?) converter to play it on the Japanese TVs aswell; i gave a PAL snes and SMK to Ha Nyan as a gift last year but he hasn't been able to use it yet. Perhaps same situation for Takashi. I guess they have them as collectors items which is nice at least.

I have a friend who recently moved to Japan for some work for short / medium term. I might get him on the case as he has been to a few of my games meets and appears to be making lots of friends there already.

Hmmm, I didn't know that. I did know however that Julien Chabanis had studied in Japan.

Anyway, who says Anna isn't going to take time and visit other parts of Japan besides Tokyo... (I assumei it's the Tokyo area at least)
I wonder if there's any way she can find out for us if any Karters were lost in the 2011 tsunami. You said we hadn't heard from Soul Kobayashi since the event...

If Ha wants to play a PAL SNES in Japan, wouldn't he need a step-up to convert from Japan's 100V mains voltage to the UK's 230V supply? He'd need a plug adapter, I do know that! But isn't there also a device that you just connect to your NTSC SNES to run PAL games? (and vice versa)
Anna would need the same in order to play PAL in Japan, but I'd imagine she uses step-down transformers to keep from frying her Jap SNES (and other 100V appliances) on the British mains voltage that would be too high.

She may do; definitely worth seeing other players. Kyoto and Hakone was quality.

Not needed, i already mentioned this somewhere when this disaster happened. I managed to get hold of Tohgo and Soul; as the latter does live further north near where it happened. They confirmed they were alive and safe.

Basically a bit like what the few US guys had to do i think to run a PAL snes. Something like that but i didnt plan for this as organising the trip was busy as it is, so i just provided the systems. Anna can think about it maybe, unless she just wants to focus on NTSC (and handheld gaming on DS and 3DS which doesnt matter too much).

I, for one, disagree here; I've spent quite a bit of time playing on a PAL ROM on a ZSNES (using an Xbox-like third party controller) to get a good feel for how PAL handles as well as appreciate the differences between PAL and NTSC. I gotta say, you really can get used to it. I don't think it's as hard or annoying as other people say it is. In fact I think some tracks such as VL2 were "done right" on PAL; NTSC feels cheap by comparison with so much leniency with the water.

Since times driven in emulators can't be submitted, I have less of an incentive to give it my best effort as I would on my NTSC console; still, I took the time to look up each of my times on the PAL charts and average them and I'd currently be #56 / Star A overall with just what I got so far (the "ASR" I calculated was lower than Leyla's, though she still has the better AF). I can't tell you how fucking easy it is to make some of the PAL Top 50s. KB2 NBT, anyone? Smiley

NBT is possible on the controller I use but the zigzagging cannot be done as smoothly as on an actual modified SNES controller, more weaving and bobbing, while boosts don't always charge (meaning I can't do all NBT strats); the ZSNES also experiences some jerkiness which can mess you up and on courses like GV2 it's hard to make out exactly where the walls are (which is important on this course)

Koltz has also played emulated PAL. Don't know what all his times are, but I know he drove a 1'02"1x, I think, on MC1 Non-NBT using the keyboard.  Shocked

Haha well no, I love the game. Just not everything about it in equal measure. Imagine you learned the game in NTSC. Then you try PAL..it is slower (dare I say, therefore more boring?) and it has incredibly poor acceleration after crashes. Also, you can't cut off corners as much (imagine playing PAL RR after being completely used to the NTSC way of cutting the corners) and platform-jumps are nearly impossible...not exactly selling points right? So I stand by my statement, I would not bother with PAL version too much if I was an NTSC native. But people like Guilherme and apparently Harvey did enjoy it to some extent still.

That's when you learn not to crash.  Wink
The slower speed of PAL, I'm actually quite comfortable with, you get a few extra milliseconds to plan your next move though most everywhere else it does feel a bit more challenging than NTSC (and it's just not my emulator, I know, though that makes it even more difficult)

KVD wrote on 10/10/13 at 14:27:06:

NBT seems to help a LOT with platform jumps on PAL. I've gotten 2/5 twice on GV1 with it. For me it was more about actually getting the boost to work on my controller. As for RR... I guess I'm not cutting the corners sharp enough on NTSC to begin with or I'd be able to get past the 1'26"xx. Best splits on PAL would get me 1'28"xx (but as I said before, it's not worth all my time to find my full potential if my "PR" doesn't count for anything). Yes the jumping distances, turning angles, and zoomstarts are different between NTSC and PAL but they also are between either version of SMK, and MKSC. You seem to have adapted to MKSC driving just fine, no?

Don't forget Alencar Faria, Charignon, Joe Bernier and even Chris Balch. Anna also started with NTSC. I mean, turnabout is fair play, all you Europeans are taking over our NTSC charts...

Yeah obviously I do see the appeal of PAL, but I am a PAL native. I think in many aspects the PAL version is superior. However, item-use seems to be better on NTSC, where red shells (and dodging) are a little less glitchy, shrooms have superior power, banana throws fly faster, etc.

On the other hand PAL driving allows more intricate handling of the kart and is much more enjoyable for tracks with sharp hairpins like MC3, MC4 and DP3.

Don't get me wrong, I think both versions are awesome...however, if I was an NTSC native I might have put PAL away before noticing the benefits that this version has. The relative drawbacks (acceleration...takes...forever) are much more obvious. I don't think it's a coincidence that there is no NTSC-native in the PAL top-10.

Not to mention Battle Mode that's so much more enjoyable in NTSC because of the high speed that usually makes it more offensive and eventful. Not that I don't like PAL Battle but I feel like it requires more tactics than skills (which is enjoyable in its own way of course, but that somehow makes it less exciting to play than NTSC).

Oh come on don't be so cruel. The interview girl was much cuter than the Harry Potter's medium teacher Roll Eyes
+ She had great hair!

Up to you man if you actually like that... Roll Eyes Seriously did you see her man's legs? They were hencher than most of ours!

If I absolutely HAD to choose someone, I would suggest the nice lady helping out with the food over this interviewer. Lots of other guys were queuing up for her I remember lol, Leyla noticed this and said she was very pretty. I didn't speak to her at all though, so maybe missed out on two opportunities (kitchen girl Wink and Sybill Trelawney Lips Sealed). Though I saw on a few pictures the interviewer was really smiling big time at Geo, either he was making her laugh with some nice jokes, or she liked him even more  Smiley

Tbh, I barely saw that woman, so I didn't take the time to watch her legs unlike you Tongue

The waitress + semi-cook was cute but Jay was the only one among all those who were into her to have the guts to get in touch with her. lol

Oh come on don't be jealous of Geo, she wouldn't have had any chance with him anyway as he's already taken. Wink
