An Interesting Development in the Battle For Good
08/08/13 at 02:49:27

As many of you know, I've long been one of the most outspoken (if not THE most outspoken) member of this community when it comes to the differences between 50Hz and 60Hz times on the main rankings.

However, I have recently obtained a PAL copy of MKDD, and as a result, I am able to play 50Hz.  I decided to give it a try tonight, and unlock the Barrel Train, and I think I'm going to be time trialing some 50Hz for the rest of August.  I've always wondered what I'd be able to do when given a level playing field, and now I've finally got that opportunity.  I'll likely be updating this thread with new times as I achieve them, though my one observation thus far about 50Hz is that MTs seem a lot easier to miss, so it may take some getting used to before I'm hitting times that I know I can.  Before I go back to school in late August, I hope to have a full 50Hz timeset submitted.  Though that doesn't give me all that much time to get strong times, it will at least be a start.

No more excuses about version differences--it's time to see what I can do.

Good luck Frigz, though i agree with Andrew. I remember when playing this game with my friend.. sometimes we would react too slow at the start of the game, and wouldn't remember whether 50hz or 60hz was selected. So come the start of the first race, the countdown would feel off, the acceleration button would be pressed too quickly, the start boost would fail / be too slow. At that point it's like "omfg quick restart the GC!!!" Basically as far as GP races were concerned, there was only one fun mode, and that was 60hz. "Adjusting" between both settings wasn't even the MAIN problem.. game was just too slow to enjoy anywhere near as much, AND it made my head hurt. :|

Saying all that, if I was closer to your level Frigz, i'd probably also see what i was able to achieve in 50hz. Who knows, maybe you can become the overall American champion. It would be completely fair for Andrew Roll Eyes ... wait what?

On another note, i'm curious to see how you perform on a level like WC, and it wouldn't surprise me if you come out with some WRs. Go get 'em man.

Not a bad start! That's a pretty good 50Hz pr, but I think you can do much better.  Wink

I also would like to see what you can do on a course like WC or RR. It wouldn't surprise me at all if you broke the WRs there by a good margin.

I'm going to play some MKDD too, but not the gay version.  Tongue

Good luck on on your heroic battle for good and fairness Ryan.  Smiley Smiley

Hah yeah I can definitely do better, I was on pace for 1'07"7 until I missed an MT on the final straight.  And yeah, WC/RR are the two courses I'm really interested in seeing what I can do on, it might take a while though because I'm still adjusting to the slower MT speed, plus I'd have to somewhat re-learn the timing for R-tech.  Could be interesting though.

the r tech is a total difference on 50hz, and you probably miss the mts cause you can't spam the same way on 50 like in 60 Smiley

Seems like just a speed difference to me, I've already started to get it a little bit.

Here's two new overall PRs:

PB 3lap 1'07"891 GOD+3, kinda bad run, I wanted 1'07"7 but whatever..best splits thus far would be something like 23.025 + 22.605 + 21.920 = 1'07"56

PB Flap 21"738 GOD+8, really wanted 21"6 so I might go back to this later

Played some LC and BP as well, no overall PRs, but some very close..1'15"4 on LC with a really bad last lap (first two were better than in my PR), 24.481 on LC as well..drove an 8.517 in BP flap, was trying to get 8.4 but couldn't quite get it today

Probably done for today, blisters getting bad haha

Nice one, what time did you get?

Here's another overall PR for me, pretty nice time, but I think a perfect run would sub 1'15 for me

LC 1'15"198 GOD+2:

I kinda bashed into the pole at the end lol but I don't think it cost me that much.

I also set two other overall PRs, LC Flap 24"440 and BP 7lap 1'04"577, but both are very minor cuts so I didn't feel like uploading them.  They are on video though.

Damn Ryan, I am impressed by those records! Pretty amazing what you can do with 50hz... I think you will pass me soon if you keep it up.. but hey! That might be a nice opportunity to come back to this game Cool

Thanks Chris!  Would be awesome if you played again as well Tongue

Here's a new time, MuC 3lap 1'34"965 GOD+4, it was solid, lap 2 was a best split, but also had some mistakes including a missed MT.  I'm happy with it though, my goal was to sub 1'35:

This is my 16th GOD time overall  Smiley

EDIT:  Math, I hope your time subbed..just got 21"700 PB flap..I think I'll keep playing because I really want the sub

Wow, well I got 21'720, but then again, it was 60Hz. I feel like sub 21.7 is much easier in 50Hz than in 60Hz, maybe I'm wrong though. I'll try again tonight and maybe record.

I feel like you could say that about a lot of things, as evidenced by my huge time drops thus far haha.  I hope I am able to get the sub at some point though, having exactly 21"700 is kind of bothering me..  It'd be awesome if you managed the sub on 60Hz though, 1'15 LC, 21"7 PB, and 2'55 RR are the three subs I've always wanted to see happen on 60Hz, and you've already shattered the first one  Tongue

Here's a new time, MB Flap 25"744 GOD+3:

About time we had an American playing 50Hz, plus another one actually be world champion in 60Hz. For too long those Euros controlled our 60Hz, now let's take over their 50Hz  Smiley

@ndrew, do you ever reckon your lack of access to 50Hz is the only thing keeping you from being Combined World Champion?  Smiley

Thanks!  Just as an update, yesterday I set 1'19"258 MB and 25"733 MB, as well as 24"004 SL.  No videos.  When I wake up, I'll likely play SL 3lap, DC, and DDJ 3lap.  The problem with DDJ is I just can't, no matter how much I practice, get the no-shroom SC more than 1/30 tries.  It's infuriating.  Not sure what I can do about it either, and that's the reason it's been my worst ranked time by far for so long.
