Played for the first time in 5 years...
07/29/13 at 01:13:19

Played for about 10 hours total over the weekend, broke a controller in anger, set 2 PRs and wept with joy, and I'm sore everywhere now. My hands, my back, and my neck all hurt. I don't remember this happening back when I was in middle school playing for hours every day. Is this what happens when you get old?

Anyways, just wanted to write a quick note and say that I'm incredibly happy this community still exists and that people are still playing MKDD in 2013. This game provided me with untold hours of entertainment, rage, and joy back in the day, and it was really nice to experience that whole range of emotions once again. Hope everyone is doing well!

I don't know who you are (a bit before my time ^^), but great to see a bit activity here! MKDD sadly is a bit dead... it was active for a while again, but now it's like dead again...

Will you keep up playing or was this more like a one time return?

I was in middle school in 2005, which is when I was most active... made a (very) brief return in 2008 as well. I'm 22 now, which I realize is still pretty young in the grand scheme of things, but I really don't remember 13-year-old me having these same physical limitations (I played a few more hours yesterday and got a blister on my thumb!).

Don't know if I'll keep playing or not. I really enjoy the kart community and I would like to see what I can do with A-tech... it looks like it's completely changed all of the strats at the top. Unfortunately I'm starting work next week (just graduated college) so that has the potential to severely limit my free time.

Where has everyone gone? It looks like SMK and MK64 have way more activity than MKDD has right now, despite their old(er) age...

^Yeah, A-Tech really has changed the WR strats, and around 2009 - middle of 2012 mainly the WRs were improved like shit. There were 3 new World Champs only in that time, and the old World Champ is now only 4th! 25 of the old WRs got improved in the last 5 3 years, which is... pretty incredible.

As for SMK and MK64: I think SMK just became interesting due to more and more players experiencing the New Boosting Technique (a modification of the controller is (almost always) needed to use them), and MK64 is the game with the highest new player rate (apart from MK7, but that doesn't really count as it's pretty new Tongue), so it seems to be really active. Well, MK64 got a huge load of new WRs in the last 2 years aswell. The big MJ (I hope you know who this is Cheesy) got dethroned after an almost 10 year reign of the crown, and is now (probably?) inactive.

Also, it's normal that you get blisters from a long time tourno after a long break. And I know how you feel with your back.. got that aswell sometimes, but that's only because of the gaming position xD

Yeah, I did a double take when I checked the MK64 rankings and saw someone above MJ. This new guy probably isn't even a fictional composite of three separate players! (maybe I'm dating myself with this reference)

After some more playing earlier this week, all I can say is: wow, A-tech makes a huge difference. I'm still getting the hang of it but feel like I have a ton of potential improvement on every track now. We'll see if I manage to find more time to play in the coming weeks Smiley

Also Chris, I guess I'm late to the party here but please allow me to give you a big congratulations on all of your kart achievements! #1 combined is really, really damn impressive and you had to beat many gaming legends to do it. It seems like you're still active too, so i'm looking forward to seeing what else you can accomplish!

New hijack!

According to the site, my last pr is from July 2007, so almost 7 years ago. I don't think I've played since then. About a month ago, I got a gamecube second hand, with mkdd of course (there was also a fifa game, but who cares!).
Just now I've completed a new timeset, and made sure all times are at least Hero. I even got a few Titans, but I doubt I'll be able to get all Titans again. It would be nice to pr; on some tracks I'm really far off, but YC-flap seems like it might be doable. Who knows where it might lead...

Wish me luck!

I'd almost forget - I got a nice time on BC:

Top 30? Ha! In my wildest dreams I make it back to the top 50. I'd settle for an AF-cut. Smiley

I got a 33"259 on YC-flap, while my PR is 33"128. I'm quite surprised, YC was one of the last tracks on which I expected to get close. On a lot of other tracks it looks hopeless.

Still, I feel like there are some things I could still learn, like combining A-tech and sideways boost. I still don't have a feel for the mechanics of that.

No PR yet, but I'm still having fun. It feels like a trip down memory lane. I'm reliving the emotions: the exhilaration of hearing the "ping ping ping ping ping!", the unsuspected laptimes, the annoying half-a-second delay between selecting "restart" and it actually responding... But most of all the frustration, of course.

For instance, I've been trying to sub 3 minutes on RR (for the first time in seven years). I get in a flow, I get 3'00"050. So close! Come on, almost there...
In the next two hours, in the midst of countless messed-up runs, I tie it, I get 3'00"012 (ffs!), I get 3'00"043...
But then that magical moment, when you say to yourself that you're giving it one last try. You get a good first lap, a decent second lap, and you know that you can make it with a good last lap. Your hands are sweating, you heart is pounding, but you have to go all out. And it goes well. You cross the finish line, you hear the music and you see...

Oh man, you got me too, that was great Cheesy

I'm surprised the half-second delay from pressing restart annoys you though, considering how I loved the the mkdd restart for being so ridiculously quick compared to all other MKs Tongue

^ I suppose I wasn't quite clear about the delay I mean. You mess up and want to restart, so you press "start", "down" and "A" (something I can do really quickly thanks to lots of messed up runs!), but then nothing happens; because after showing the menu, the game ignores you pressing (or meshing) A for half a second, for no apparent reason.

Well, it wasn't quite as epic as this one episode from my previous life. I was going for Titan on DKM-3lap (1'47"500), which was one of my last Titans to get. After a couple of days of trying (and failing), I got... 1'47"500. And yes, you have to beat the standard, not tie it. It was one of the most painful moments of my life. Grin
By the way, going back to the present: I did get it the next day, after another hour: 2'59"924. Smiley

By another way, I was just now browsing through Yahoo Groups to check what my last Titans were. It turns out the last one I got was BP-7lap. Curiously, in my second life, it was my first! Huh
I'm currently at 13 Titans, ARR 10.81 (Hero A, #98; actual ARR 7.75). Still no PRs, but I'm not playing that often.

^Big congrats on that sub, breaking any minute barrier is always an awesome feeling. Especially if it's means you'll never have another 3'xx"xxx PR Smiley

This really makes me want to begin my second MKDD life; I never finished destroying my initial 1-try timeset in 2012 because my controller broke and then my Wii's disk drive broke by the time I got the controller working. I never got around to 6 of the courses, but the ARR of the other 10 courses is 10.9 Hero A...

A little update: I now (virtually) have 3 TC's, 17 TD's, 9 HA's, 1 HB and 2 HC's (guess where). That gives an ARR of 10.43, which is Titan D! Smiley

No PRs yet, but just now I got frightfully close. While trying to sub 1'29"8 on MCR (for Titan), I suddenly got 1'29"564, which is just 0"021 above my PR! Even though the first lap could've been better, I'm not going to get a PR here anytime soon, because those other two laps were simply "Shocked"
