I use Diddy and Toad in B Train, Diddy for great defense and blue shells/lightning in low places and Toad because sometimes I get lucky and get goldens in 1st.

Defo any light character in Barrel Train. I'd recommend Diddy and Toad/Toadette aswell, as they both get their special items at higher places, too. Plus, the big banana is really a big advantage to hold enemies of your back, and as Leone already said, Toad for lucky gold shrooms (allthough I am pretty sure you can't get golden in first place, only second iirc).

To keep the game fair when playing the 2 player Grand Prix, good pairings would be toad / koopa and toadette / koopa. As far i as know, both teams would have the same special items selection.

Diddy and Toad is definitely the best combo if you are playing GP.
@ Chris: It is possible to have golden shroom when you are first, we already saw it during French Lan but of course it doesn't happen often

I used Toad+Toadette in Barrel Train. Same team I use in TT. Since both can get Golden Mushroom, it's your best chance to set a time record in a GP.

i find that diddy is the strongest character in mkdd once you are good enough to stay first all game long because he has the most common first place item and can stop most items (including bowser shell!). another good choice is mini bowser (way more fun but less effective overall). however, it might be supersticious but i feel like mini mario/luigi get less blue shells and lightnings then the other characters but that might just be me

I'll try to get back to MKDD next month. So I'll give a try at this Diddy/Toad combination. I used to play with koopa or Paratroopa instead of Diddy, but I their items are useless so... Thanks for the tip!

Yeah, reds are kinda stupid. They're way too easy to block if you have DK/diddy, and all you have to do to dodge them is r, quick release, r while steering. Sometimes I make it a game in itself-- I once got 7 consecutive red dodges.

What do you mean by "R while steering"?
To dodge red shells, I used to just start drifting, and once the red shell was close, just release everything except A. In other words, I used the same strat as dodging BS, but with no MT required.
