Firstly, i dont think the 2009 final was the tensest ever, it was fairly one sided in the GP. The 2010 one didn't matter cos Florent had won the CDM anyway but it was the only other time apart from BPA's threat last year that Florent was almost eliminated in GP. The Match Race final a few days earlier was the most unorthodox thing to ever happen, but made for some excitement nonetheless.
Hard to choose but CDM 2009 had some of the most funny stuff in it, 2008 was close, heres my summary of the best bits:
2008:- First european championship ever, biggest kart / games meet to date at the time from all of Mariokart64.com community.
- First organisation by Guillaume and Claire Leviach with great help from FF as always, a wonderful success overall.
- All of our team were there including some older faces like John Barber (JWB).
- Set up some great tournos on the side which nearly everyone took part in.
- Me losing the MR 3rd place match to Geo and everyone screaming the place down so loudly i almost went deaf
- Me almost beating Harold in Battle Mode QF.
- Football match from hell in a jungle of grass that ranged from knee height to waist height. The 2nd half we had to make a miracle happen and somehow it did
- Actually if i remember, I think i was referee in the football lol
- Great meals and laughter with all the players.
- Barber thought that Martin Pfeiffer looks like Egon from Ghostbusters.
- Crazy amount of prizes for everyone.
- Drew climbing on top of the venue to get a ball that Patrick kicked up there, then jumping back down from the highest point to hard ground, even though he had the option to jump a shorter distance to a softer / grass landing spot.
- Harold getting drunk one night, then falling flat on his face in the dark.
- Baptiste Baly calling out who plays who on each group stage match, no one understood him, even the French players so we all had to go back to the laptop and find out who we were playing every time. This was later resolved with the projector screen showing who to play
2009:- First official CDM, with great new entries including GAS! Beautiful venue and area to hold it in.
- Meeting the mayor was great, nice guy and made a nice speech, inviting members of the village / town to see some of the activities.
- Preparing a trailer 2 days before CDM to pretty much say "watch me and florent in the match race final" in the video, with lightning pictures and sounds in it.
- Match Race Final, all the lightnings happen to make the most unorthodox match ever seen (did i predict something here?) Read the next line...
- Also put (for some reason) a photo of Zarkov in the trailer with his fists up looking ready for a fight. And then...
- Zarkov got drunk and had a fight with some french lady in her car in the village somewhere, and rushed back in looking tired / scared / but laughing at the same time, and said "i think i just got into a fight"
- My SNES pad breaking just before the TT is about to start, and FF coming to the rescue (thank you my dear
) Cos afterwards this happened:
- Me winning the Time Trial final somehow and embarassing myself in front of everybody by not knowing how to open a bottle of champagne that was handed to me. (it's not my fault dont drink ok!!
)
- Baptiste waging CDM war against his great rival Sean at the dinner table on the first night. Sean's snes pad was almost broken beyond use already, and he thought Baptiste had won by the end of the GP scores, so Sean smashed his pad up outside. We took Sean back in and told him that he was actually ahead instead.
- We told Drew not to use D.K.Jr in Battle Mode, and he wouldn't listen, losing very badly and learning a good lesson there. But he still made the final, while dressed up in women's clothing and make up on.
- Me and BPA doing a number on the GP group stage, by reaching 1st and 2nd in the group, with more points than the other groups. This was a great memory for Ben and he wasn't sure if he would be able to repeat something as great. CDM 2012 though something a little different but just as exciting happened.
- Genghis.... Or Jey Serra? Nah... Genghis!! This guy was the Khan of SMK indeed, he was from France, but he was actually Mongolian or something and was sent in a time machine to the CDM 2009 for this year. And we never saw him again since, this was probably why. If you heard his war cry it was quite something. He may not have been the most dangerous contender in the SMK field but by God he could fight a great battle if and when he wanted to!
- Butters the cat... the poor stray cat had a dodgy eye or something so they named him this. Crazy rumours have it that curiosity killed the cat... and Drew got hold of it. I know he hunts his own food in the mountains but hopefully this poor cat didn't fall victim to the Mountain Yak.
A few highlights of the rest:
2010:- Travelled on my own, but great venue from 2008 used again.
- Introduction of the one who would be called Tif Tif. He didn't know you could jump with R in SMK prior to the event. Funny guy and lots of laughs!
- Scoub completing and unleashing the famous Super Parigo Kart game at this CDM, much appreciated again man for this great piece of work!
- A great final on TT between Flo and Karel
- A healthier looking match race final between Flo and I.
- Drew and i training battle the night before, Drew falls asleep in his chair literally head down and eyes shut but still driving course 4 like he was awake. Martin Pfeiffer and I watching were like wtf?!?
- Drew running the show on Battle mode, after seeing what Drew did the night before, it was no surprise.
- My GP final where i went the distance with Florent for the first time.
- The Super Holmiere Bros having almost the same final score at CDM 2010
- Drew coming up to people with a strange smile and saying "Do you want some pizza"?
- The guys (and gays?) messing about with the Vuvuzela all the time.
- Drew sleeping all over the place, one night was actually outside with no tent or anything.
- Putting the vuvuzela right on Drew's ear and blowing and full power to try to wake him up on ceremony day. It took 4 attempts for this to happen.
- Patrick Wessels winding up a drunk Aron Langerak on the last night.
2011:- Wonderful venue in the suburbs, after a long journey there we settled in.
- Some nice new entries including young Conor Wood and his uncle from the UK, and David Moll.
- The Ghost Valley 1 dark tv incident on TT
- Florent and Guillaume epic TT final.
- Conor Wood surprises on multiplayer modes overall.
- Karel eliminates Flo on Semi-Final MR
- Geo runs the show on Battle mode and wins the final in an incredibly close bout vs Florent.
- Great food and barbeque
- Samuel Gomez making some entertainment one evening as a "Professeur"
- Drew antics in the children's playground outside the venue, climbing the frames and scaring some kid off by mistake.
- Drew hiding up a tree for half an hour, then a twig snaps and he comes crashing down, startling some lady sitting nearby who was enjoying a peaceful afternoon.
2012:- Special anniversary year project setup by Guillaume and myself
- Record number of players joining the event, over 50
- Return of some old faces from Team UK (Matt, Ben), and some new ones including Leyla Hasso.
- Barely having enough space for the tents, but we managed in the end.
- No idea where Drew slept but he doesn't care as always
- Me not entering the NTSC TT and everyone wondering why, everyone thought i was bluffing (as usual) till the last moment.. but um... i wasnt
- Playing a MR session vs Harold for practice and losing 11-9. He didn't use any skank tactics at all... honest
- Christian Wild's constant swearing over minor matches.
- Aron Langerak losing his snes pad between every single TT round, MR group match, literally all the time!
- Tif Tif getting out of his chair all the time during TT one tries to check another person's TV.. why i don't know. But it is like exam conditions... i hope he doesn't do this at University
- Leyla Hasso getting 20/20 zoom starts on the TT, not many people did, i missed one.
- Conor Wood reaching Semi-Final MR
- Drew trying Bowser this year for battle mode despite everyone telling him not to. Epic Semi-Final with Scoub, and Scoub takes the win.
- Epic and deserved win for Scoub on Battle Mode final vs Geo! Well done man!
- Reaching the title on CDM for the first and maybe last time ever. I hope to see others have this opportunity for future.
- Me dropping the lid of the trophy on the floor twice within seconds after receiving it.
- Drew with his Chewbacca look this year.
- Tif Tif going to bed at 9am drunk every night and sleeping all day.
- Tif Tif with his cup of beer round his neck all week and pork hanging out his mouth anytime it was breakfast / lunch / dinner. While chewing on a pork sandwich he asked Leyla if shes a good muslim aswell?
- Florent and i putting champagne bottles around a passed out Camille Batier and a sign saying "Give up" on the last night.
- Florent stacking about 50 chairs around Camile Batier on the last morning and him waking up not realising where he is.
- Meeting and hanging out with the NLG 2007 buddies, Richard Karlsson and Andreas Rudmarker, great guys from Sweden!
- Our family realising just before CDM that Conor's father and my sister, Leyla's mother were old college friends about 25 years ago
- Conor and Leyla eating a whole bowl of Haribos then getting too hyper!
- Meeting Sylvain Bellard who was about 6 foot 50 inches tall
- "Euuuuuuuuuuuhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!" - You had to be there to understand this... It might come back again in 2013
- Leyla getting home and immediately saying to my sister that she is definitely going again next year. She must have enjoyed the week or something
