First (real) world champion?
06/15/13 at 07:14:44

The release of a new game is always a big chance for some of the unknown players to jump out of the dark right into the spotlight. Because everyone could be the first world champion. Everyone starts (I'll take this back if Japan gets it first again) with the same amount of time put in the game, 0 hours and 0 minutes to be exact.

However, over the years it has been proven that most of these dreams get crushed quite soon when some of the big guns decide to play the game. In MKW, it were MKDS stars Giulio and Fabien that came out on top, followed by combined top players Schiering and Borne. In MK7, there was no resistance for Mick who dominated the game the first couple of months.

But who will it be in MK8? Will the MK7 experts win the battle against the MKW stars? Or will it, once again, be one of the all-time greatest? Call it NOW!

With real world champion I ofcourse mean the first to actually hang on to that title, not just the first one to submit his times (sorry Mark Jones...).

Some elaboration on the poll options

Mick was the first uncontested MK7 champion. He managed to stay up top for about 8 months before Alexony took over.

Stacy is the only MK player to be ranked inside the top 100 of every PP. In both MKW and MK7 he grabbed his fair share of WRs and he never really stopped playing any of the MK games.

Fried was the one and only combined champion until Chraizy took over. He might be more known as a MK64 player, but he dominated the start of MKDS (1.000 AF, ye you read it right) and always contested for the top spots in the early days of KW and MK7.

Nicola is more of a handheld specialist who took numerous WRs in MK7. He's also one the top MKDS players. Will he be able to do the same in MK8?

Michele is Michele and ALAKTORN. He already proved himself as a top poster, but who will stop him in MK8 if he gets all the new strats first?

Shaun is old school, but he is one of MKW's top players. He gave up quite early on MK7, however he still took some WRs first.

Chris is the combined mario kart champ. He's trying to keep a low profile by saying that he doesn't like automatic MTs, but I still don't count him out.

Probably Mick, Stacy or Fried. If not #1, at least top10.

And, to be fair, those guys only dominated MKW due to lack of total players. If Nobuo or Yavieron would have been on the PP at the time, it would have been a completely different story.

would be cool to get #1 for once but I don’t see myself doing that, I’m more of a WRs guy than an AF guy

since MK8 looks to be very similar to MK7, I could see Mick getting #1 if he puts in the effort again

I'd like to see Fried or even Penev at the top early on, but I'd say either Mick or Shaun.

It depends how much time Mick puts into the game at the beginning.  If he plays 8+ hours per day then he'll probably be the world champion, since he's better than me in MK7 and it looks like MK8 is similar to MK7.  If he doesn't put that much time into it, then I think I have the best chance among the other people in the poll (not counting "Other"), since I'm the only one who regularly puts in a lot of effort during the first few months of each MK.  Iirc I was #2 for a few weeks near the beginning of MK7, so I would've been world champion if Mick wasn't playing.  Of course it also depends on who gets the game first, North America or Europe, because whoever gets it first has an advantage.

If I had to break it down into probabilities, I think it would be something like this:
Other: 40%
Mick: 25%
Me: 25%
One of the other poll options: 10%

I gave me and Mick the same probability because I know I'll be playing the game, but I have no idea what Mick is planning to do.

I didn't have a specific person in mind.  The 40% includes everyone who's not in the poll.  If it ends up being someone who's not in the poll, I think it's more likely to be someone who's currently in the community rather than someone we don't know yet.  Now that I think about it, Stacy also has a pretty good chance, so here's my new probability breakdown:

Someone in the community who's not in the poll: 25%
Me: 23%
Mick: 18%
Someone not in the community who's not in the poll: 15%
Nicola: 8%
Stacy: 7%
Someone else in the poll: 4%

Of course these numbers will change if people like Stacy or Nicola say that they'll try to become world champion, but I don't think either of them have said that yet.  I lowered Mick's percentage a little because he might start his PhD.

Edit: I just noticed in the other thread Nicola is planning to get the game, but he didn't say how much effort he'll put into it, so I added him to my list (if he says that he'll try to become world champion then I'd put him somewhere in the 20s).

Looks interesting, not sure. If its like MK7 you may still want to consider who's at then top now; Alexony and Marv (both who are getting the game I know, not sure about Adro)

I could be one of those 25% not listed either. If the game truly is like MK7 I'm pretty used to MK7 and I plan to get it at launch. But I'll probably just be a possible first week top 10 contender, if that. I think whoever is most innovative with strats will be the first champ. There's bikes, karts, coins, numerous different options with anti gravity, whoever figures out what to try could be a factor

Really hope this game has WiFi top 10 rankings like MKW

isn’t the fact that they’re taking off MKW rankings proof that they want to make space for MK8?

Lol, thanks for considering me, but I don't have a chance at all, there are way more talented karters here Tongue

Anyway, I don't intend to TT much on MK8 at the moment, but I'll probably decide what to do when I get the game anyway... I didn't intend to TT much on MK7 at first, too, but then I liked it so I started competing actively.

Among the poll options, my pick would be Mick if he decides to TT and if he's not too busy. I also see Alexony, AdroMaster and Marv as very strong contenders.

I think there might be a new Yavieron, though. Somebody almost nobody knows at first, but who manages to get most of the WRs. If MK8 has rankings, I don't find it unlikely.

EDIT: I voted Mick because I'm confident he will be the champion if he decides to TT actively.

Marv predicted that Mick will be world champion, which makes me think he won't put a huge amount of effort into it himself, but he did say "it looks great to me so I'll buy it for sure" in the other thread so maybe he has a chance.  Alexony only said "Looks fine to me" so he doesn't seem very enthusiastic about the game.

Nicola wrote on 06/16/13 at 04:19:53:

If you don't have confidence in yourself, then I guess I shouldn't have confidence in you either, but I still wouldn't rule you out.  You're currently ranked higher than Mick in MK7.  It just depends on whether or not you play 10 hours per day.  I think in the first couple of weeks of MK7, everyone in the top 5 was playing 8-10 hours per day.

I think it's going to be Mick. He was a beast in MK7 at the beginning and french people seem to get the games like 4 days early. I remember that a lot of french players from the community had the game much earlier than others. This could give Mick an advantage and in the beginning time of a Mario Kart game 1 or 2 days are a lot.

I thought Mick got the game later because he lived in the USA when MK7 came out.
