There are World Records going back before the creation of some of the sites including NTSC Japanese NBT records from the 1990s on MC1 not listed on mkwrs.com (course records only though, not really any additional fastlap information). As discussed I have been doing some more research recently on this; so hopefully soon I can help to gather the information that is possible and we can update that too. Otherwise for PAL at least we have a very complete list from 1999 onwards with lots of stories as we discovered the techniques and refined them. Each site will want to definitely make sure they get the correct World Records through the years; on the newer Mario Karts for example there are site records, but some faster World Records on mkwrs.com, so it will be best to check there and speak to the players of each game.

Back when SMK came out in the UK, I had a friend called Jamie who claimed he "had the fastest MC1 time in the world". So you can put him down for the WR in 1993-4 for sure.

I've also added the vids from these pages to the WR history website.

There was even a video from a WR driven in 2000! Sami's VL2 (which is annotated as 52"96, but is actually a 52"97)!  
After having a quick scan I think it's currently the oldest WR vid we have on SMK, but could it be the oldest WR video on the page altogether?

EDIT: never mind, I already saw a vid from 1999 (Zwartjes' legendary LR 3-lap from MK64).

I agree that it's a shame that there was no video, but the claim itself is very likely legit. I say this because Patrick saw the time on his cartridge back in the day, they were good friends from the 90s era with all the Nintendo championships. It's still a hearsay type of evidence obviously, but Patrick has almost savant like memory so I tend to trust his observations.

Agreed that the cartridge observation itself does not constitute solid evidence, obviously. And you're right, we'll likely never have that either way.

But another reason for why I believe it's not a fake is that it doesn't fit the profile at all.
Steven Zwartjes has won everything that there is to win in gaming under the sun and more. Official Nintendo Championships, GoldenEye tournaments, you name it. No cheating possible with those for obvious reasons (live tournos). He had also gotten countless World Records in prior years, always with video proof when required. How much sense does it make for someone like that to suddenly turn a leaf and start cheating? Especially because he's obviously very talented (could pretty much get WRs on a whim) and already had so much stature in videogaming competition. I just don't see where his motivation to cheat would come from.
Perhaps SZ's biggest 'skill' was the ability to find new (micro) strats better and faster than almost anyone else. Since this particular WR was achieved with the so called mystery boost, to me it's very feasible that he just got the edge on the competition by finding this (like he had so many times in the past for other WRs), but perhaps he just didn't feel like spilling the beans on how he did it for once.

So yeah no evidence either way, but circumstancial evidence to back up the cheating story is much more slim in my eyes.

4000 days! That's the first (documented) Mario Kart WR that cracks the 4k mark*. The longer this WR is standing, the more upset I am getting that there was no video recorded (we were between PCs at my parents' place after a HD crash). One day I will at least have to tie it. Having said that, I have already tried it many times and didn't even get into 11"6x anymore on any of those.  

*I should specify that there are some Non-NBT WRs that are FAR older. But that competition has (unfortunately) grinded to a more or less complete halt in the previous decade or so.

I would suggest on the long lasting wr page that you put the "ending date" instead of the "WR?" column, if it is the current wr you could leave it blank or put the current date

Also and surely much more difficult, it would be great to somewhat combine the activity stat and WR snapshot to be able to view areas of high activity
- even an easy shortcut to the next day or next wr achieved could help
- maybe highlight a wr achieved that day also (i see the <1 duration)
