Don't think so, I had set myself a higher target. I definitely have a vid of a 17"59 and the opener though. I will be back here.  Smiley

. If a screenshot can be produced of the magazine with an accompanied name (Japanese symbols of the name would already be ok of course), then fair enough, it should be added. I oppose having a half-assed mention in a corner outside of the database though. Database and site should be 1 organism.

Yes definitely outside of the database, just make a separate link to "other old records prior to smk site"

And if we find any other old books and magazines containing material that is legit enough then we can post it.

Photo can be arranged of the mention in the magazine, I just have to dig it out and scan it in. Might be worth adding in the tester time from the Japanese guide also from the year before that.

Edit: Here you go, it was an article a guy in the UK who was playing on an import SFC wrote in February 1993 which was printed in the March issue of that year (Super Play Magazine) in the UK. Their response then confirmed the latest Japanese record of the time, and you can see their scanned the 59"92 with Japanese writing from another Japanese magazine. One piece of info we do have was that it was driven with Bowser. They mentioned this record again a few times in other mags, and I might have seen one that later they got down to 59"84. It was listed in text writing that time, not the image scan from the Jap mag, and if this was driven by the same guy again I don't know.

In any case, please use this one for that side page of "historical non smk site World Records". Id say the date could be March 1993 then, and unknown driver. I have a feeling it might have been a Japanese tester going at it forever. If not then some guy in his home like us who had figured out how to play really well early on.

http://img594.imageshack.us/img594/5560/scan00052v.jpg

Therefore please document this somewhere in the site wherever suitable. Add the image if you like I think its good to show for historical purposes.

I’d just like to mention that the Japanese image with the time shows a date, it being November 26th (of probably 1992, I’d guess), and yes, the Jap itself says the character was Bowser on Mario Circuit 1

edit: oh and it also says “Current official Nintendo record”

maybe Sami can confirm the text in the yellow part: 11月26日現在任天堂公認記録

Did the people who wrote that magazine realize that the Japanese record was NTSC while times set on British systems would be PAL? And that it was, therefore, impossible for someone in Britain to beat the Japanese record? (NBT had not been discovered at this point... what do you think that N stands for...)

Yes, the date is November 26. The kanji for "moon" is also used for "month", and is placed after the number for the month, while the kanji for "sun" is also used to mean "day" and goes after the numerical date. (So today's date would be "2014[Year Kanji] 03[Moon Kanji] 19[Sun Kanji].")
The year had to be 1992 since this magazine was printed in March 1993.

I don't see Anna or Honko anywhere, one of them would have to translate the rest of that text. I have a Japanese-English dictionary, but I can't look up kanji (entries are listed only by alphabetical order of their Roman alphabet spelling) and computer translators can't translate them worth shit because any given kanji can have many meanings based on, for one thing, what other kanji it's combined with (which also changes its pronunciation-- ergo, how the kanji is romanized).

Older video games like SMK used only kana in their Japanese text (due to ROM space limitations) so it was easier to look things up (romanizing hiragana and katakana is pretty easy to learn) but proper written Japanese includes kanji and all modern video games probably use it as well.
IMO, kanji is what really makes learning Japanese very hard. You have to know about 2,000 of them to read a newspaper, each with an average of at least two or three completely different pronunciations, or "readings" (typically one Japanese plus one based on Chinese).  Some are simple enough-- the kanji for "one" is a single horizontal stroke-- while others take, like, 15 strokes to write. Good times if you're trying to read it in a small font.

Yes british magazines had written back in 1993 something like "apparantly the us and japanese system is faster than the european so we do not know if we will be able to lower our records this far" I know Matt Leech (on the site) who was a former UK Time Trial Champion prior to me, had written in early 1993 with a time of very low 1'04" and was working on it a lot. In 1996 he had gotten to 1'02"00 or so and was a registered record holder on the old sites prior to ours. I wasn't playing TT as much, more 150cc back in 1993 but by late 1996 i already had far down into the 1'01"s (sadly i was about as unknown as any Tom, Dick or Harry down the street back then Tongue )

^His name is Charles Piche according to Kartie's WR evolution page. His last name sounds French but then it would be odd for him to be on NTSC. Maybe he's Canadian?

Also, anyone know why certain times in Kartie's WR page are in different colors? Most times are yellow but some are blue/turquoise and I don't see any pattern to them.
