Travelling around the US and beyond
03/14/13 at 13:38:56

Hi. So I'm going travelling at the end of April for a year, or at least that's the plan. For the first three months (April 30th - July 30th) I'll be road tripping around the States. I've done an image of my planned route below, with the red line indicating my route. It's not absolutely set in stone but this is a general idea of my plan. The only concretes are that I fly in to Orlando and fly out of Vegas, so I'm definitely starting in Florida;

I thought it'd be good to see who was on my way. It'd be great to meet up with some fellow karters along the way, so if you can see that I'm passing by near where you live please let me know! I've only been to a few places in the US so it'd be awesome to have a guide now and again. From the US I go on to New Zealand (via brief stints in Hawaii and Fiji), Australia, Thailand and finally China. So yeah, anyone? Tongue

Oh and if you think my planned route is ridiculous, and that I'm missing out on some major spots, I'm all ears. I'm pretty sure there'll be a lot of disagreement there though.

I think many people will ask why you don't plan visiting the North East of USA. Well, at least, I do.

I've been to New York twice before, so I'd really like to tread new ground. I do have a friend who'll be in Connecticut when I'm travelling so it's possible I may venture there.

From after Chicago all the way until you hit the Pacific it's going to be really really boring.  There's nothing at all up there.

The northern part of Montana is nice. But there will definitely be a lot of nothing and empty space (see North Dakota). Mount Rushmore is in South Dakota. Yellowstone is in Wyoming, and is a must see if you can make it. You could cover both of those if you didn't go quite so far north.

Yeah that's the phase of the journey I'm not too sure about. I could go further south at that point, as in further away from the border, or I could just get a greyhound all the way across and not really stop anywhere. I've also considered crossing into Canada for a bit, but I definitely want to go to Seattle.

Route's pretty shit, might as well go straight across.

Anyways if you plan to visit karters might as well route based on where they live, cause there's not a lot to see (imo unless you're a huge tourist then you should visit the big cities).

Well no, I'm not doing some sort of specific Mario Kart world trip. This is something I've been planning for awhile and I have arranged to meet up with some non-kart friends at various places. However, it suddenly struck me that I might be passing by some fellow karters.
I'll give a bit of insight into my thinking, which may explain why I have chosen such a route.
I'm starting in Florida because I went to Miami a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it, but didn't get a chance to see what else was around there. I never went to a water park!
From there I'd like to visit the Great Lakes and the surrounding towns/cities, so the quickest route would naturally be straight up (I don't mind stopping off in places along the way though). Once I reach the lakes, the windy city is an obvious choice, plus I've heard there're a few good college towns near there, such as Madison, Wisconsin. Any more info on this area would be appreciated though! I have friends in Toronto, so I guess I would have have the option to cross the border at this point.
Next place which is an absolute must is Seattle (with the option of going to Vancouver, big X Files fan) so road tripping westward from the lakes will have to be done. As I said before though, it doesn't necessarily have to be a straight line so I could zig zag a bit to hit some good spots.
From Seattle the next must is San Fran, and I'd like to go through LA and San Diego before finishing in Vegas.

So maybe this explains why I've chosen this path. Oh, and where are the best women? Wink

You seem to be going out of your way to avoid Texas and most of the Deep South! Why is that?

If you want real traditional American culture you gotta spend a while in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama...

Go to a Sunday morning church service while you're there, sit in a front porch rocking chair while you drink sweet tea and RC Cola, eat at Waffle House for breakfast and Denny's for supper, and listen to some country music. You can socialize at a livestock auction in the afternoon and at a bar in the evening, where you can find someone to shoot pool with as you both sip on a Budweiser while Blake Shelton plays on the jukebox.

That will make even a Welshman feel like an American.  Smiley

This reminds me of why I'm definitely a Southerner lol, because that just sounds awesome.

Anyway, from the route I see, you appear to be passing through my part of Virginia. Not much through there but the scenery is nice. I think the only thing around here worth noting is that Franklin County (just south of Roanoke) is the home of moonshine, but there really isn't anything there to see.

I've covered quite a bit of the ground you mapped so just my thoughts...

First interesting spot to visit would be Cape Canaveral.  There are some old forts scattered along the East coast before you head north on I-77 I presume.  That's a nice drive through the mountains there.  Boring shit drive through central Ohio afterwards but that dumps you out near Sandusky which has amusement and water parks on the coast of lake Erie.  I would just head straight to Chicago from there then try to work out a route to make it through Glacier National Park.  After farting around in Seattle, there are tons of national parks and shit to see along route 101 which is a very scenic drive.  Since you are heading out of Vegas, maybe consider going through Death Valley?

Lot easier to see and do things driving yourself but you aren't missing much taking a bus on some of those longer legs which use the interstates anyway.

This is so wrong.  You could spend a lot of time in Montana going to the parks as Etch mentioned.  Going across the US in the northern parts will be amazing if you like the outdoors.  One way you could do this is after Wisconsin, head north through Minnesota into Canada, then you can definitely enjoy seeing things near Winnipeg, then cross Canada on the main Canadian route till you get to Glacier National Park in Montana.  Then onward to Seattle!

Alternatively, you could head out of Wisconsin on I-90 and see the Badlands area in South Dakota, but this isn't quite as exciting -- you can probably see some 'brown stuff' near Vegas anyway at the tail end of your trip.

Don't forget to get an American SNES and SMK while you're here. They look different from the PAL and Japanese counterparts, even the controllers.
Then you'll be able to get a timeset for SMK... an NTSC one.  Cool

I know you can afford it since you're making this trip in the first place.  Smiley

Lots of SNES-era games you can probably only get in US/Canada (unless you want the Japanese version), though many are now offered on the PAL Virtual Console, including FF4 and 6 (but not 5), Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG... One game you can't get on VC though is EarthBound, there are lots of used copies floating around in the States, though they fetch a pretty penny, but once again it shouldn't break your bank.  Wink

Don't know if you collect older Nintendo cartridge games but just saying. But I'd still go for the SMK at least!

P.S. If you're going to Vegas why not see the Grand Canyon and the Utah arches and buttes while you're there? I'm sure the Grand Canyon National Park offers helicopter tours...
In any case, hope you enjoy being away from the cold and rain of Wales for a while  Smiley
You might decide you want to go on and live here!

Thanks for the responses so far, some really helpful info here.

Obviously I can't do everything and go everywhere in 2 and a half months (the final 14 days are spent in Hawaii) but I'm starting to feel like I might alter the beginning leg of the journey and go through Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky on my way to the lakes to get some of that Southern culture. Am I missing much in North and South Carolina? I'm looking to have a good mix of places where I can see some sites/scenery but also find some lively spot with a great nightlife and young crowd.

Hmm looks like I'm missing spring break though Sad. Heard a lot about that!

If I had the time and money, I would definitely join you. That's my dream to travel all around the world like you're planning to do. I'll do that some day. Definitely.
Especially as I have family/friends in Australia and Florida.

Also, you should plan to meet some karters everytime you move on to another state. Tongue

Next time you're in the Miami area time that with Spring Break! Grin

Since you're starting in Orlando, might as well stay on I-75 to do stuff around Atlanta then head towards Nashville and Louisville.  After that you could go straight to Chicago through Indiana or go around by stopping in Cincinnati and Toledo on the way.  Lots of history in the towns on this route and plenty of interesting sites on the way, especially Mammoth Caves!

Are you just staying on Oahu or are you touring the islands as well? lol

Madison is a good college town, but not so much a tourist town.  If you're just looking to hang out with friends for a day, you could find plenty to do (laser tag, mini golf, go to a movie, etc.), but there's nothing here that you couldn't just do somewhere else on your trip.  If you're interested in water parks, you should go to the Wisconsin Dells.  It's only an hour away from here, and there are a handful of cool parks there.  Mt. Olympus is probably the best because it has a lot of water slides, roller coasters, and some really cool go kart tracks.

Well, I live in LA. I could show you some Hollywood type stuff if you're interested.

There is nothing in Montana, Idaho, Wyoming... You should go to Colorado, Portland, Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Vegas as far as that part of the trip is concerned.

Texas is fantastic (but HUGE). Spend some time in Dallas and Austin... New Orleans is just awesome, and Chicago is my hometown. Get an Italian beef sandwich from Al's.

Go to the US for the food. If it helps, go to some food network sites like Diners, Drive-ins and Dives, because the host just goes to different cities and explores their awesome local food. Makes me want to try several different cities just for the food.

Well said Joe. I still have a few friends and relatives in the Dallas area but haven't visited since '09. Though I have the feeling that the Mexicans really want Texas back after a century and a half.  Smiley
Very nice place though. Texas has one foot in the South and the other in the Southwest. The Mexican influences give the Lone Star State a unique culture unlike any other.

As for the size of Texas, well it's larger than France or Ukraine, almost as big as Turkey, twice as big as Japan or Germany, and nearly 3x the size of the UK. Only about 20-25 million people though (less than half of Britain), most of whom lives in Dallas-Ft. Worth, the Houston area, or the San Antonio/Austin corridor. Rest of the state is pretty spread out, people-wise, especially the western side and most of the Mexican border area. In Europe you'd have to go to northern Scandinavia or Iceland to experience such sparseness.

Worth noting that if you're driving Interstate 10 across the U.S. (which I don't think you are going to), if you're at the eastern edge of Texas (in the town of Orange) you are closer to Jacksonville, Florida, on the Atlantic coast, than you are to El Paso on the western edge of Texas (very isolated place indeed). And if you're in El Paso, then you're closer to Los Angeles, on the Pacific coast, than you are to Orange! 880 miles from one end of Texas to the other. Wink

Grand Canyon is four hours from Vegas but it's the closest you'll ever be to it more than likely (out of the way on your red line).  I don't know which end will be open then though.  The whole budget cuts and everything.

Agreed on Madison, can't think of a touristy thing to do there, but if you're interested in a college like party + trying some local beverages or whatever.  Hopefully you have a pal there.

Everything else kinda depends on what you're interested in/who you are interested in meeting but I don't know you at all to advise.

After some thinking. I've drawn up an alternative route as a possibility. Would like to hear some thoughts. Doing it this way would depend on whether I'm able to change my outgoing flight from Vegas to Seattle.
Thanks to those that have offered to meet up so far. I'll be in touch shortly about that.

Colorado really is beautiful, and has a lot of cool breweries and wineries. I went there last summer for a weekend and really had an awesome time. The New Belgium Brewing Company is in Colorado, and they have a really cool tour you can take (and they give you a bunch of free beer).

Looks like you'll miss Texas; bummer. Tons of great BBQ you're going to miss out on.

Good to hear about Colorado. A tour with free beer sounds right up my street! I'm waiting to hear back from my travel company with regards to changing my outgoing flight destination from Vegas to Seattle. If they can it means I can do the second route I've posted and go to the grand canyon etc. I think Texas would be too far out my way and would add a lot more road miles on, but I can always visit there at another point in my life as I seem to be hearing good things!

Don't venture to the deep parts of San Diego as you might wind up in Tijuana if you cross at a dirt road, but there's usually fencing and barbed wire that you have to run though.  The trade for an Englishman down there is 3x what it is for an American though(roughly 2x the currency of the time).

When you're going through Death Valley, you could try to snag some saguaro cactus(grab the roots mainly) and plant them in Hyde Park if you can make it past border control.

You could then head east past Vegas and go on a short rafting trip down the Colorado River tributary through the Grand Canyon.  If you're gonna sleep on the edge of the Grand Canyon, you'll need a reservation for the camping sites.  Watch out for spiders and scorpions in your sleeping bag.  Just shoo them away during the night.
