Been some time since I've posted on the MB.
I'm really surprised the time has made it as far as it has so far, to be honest. I guess it was a mixture of very low activity here for a while, as well as I not really playing this track a lot after my first WR here in 2010 with a 1:31.444. My 1:31.421 was 8-10 hours in December of 2011, there really wasn't a lot of effort.
I think the 1:31.444 opened the way to show that a 1:30 is really not that outrageous here, especially with a 30.2xx 2nd lap back then. I've personally had large untapped potential the entire time, with my best splits being near a second faster than my WR, and potential best laps can go further than 1 second ahead.
Some people on the MB may have watched me on and off the past 2 weeks in the middle of January streaming. After my WR passed the 2 year mark, I had an itch to come back one last time to the game and see what I can do (at one point I didn't think I was going to have the time for it but I was able to give it a shot for a few days). After not playing for nearly 2 years, I was going to be pretty happy setting a 1:31 by the time I stopped. I spent about 9-11 hours over the span of 2 weeks attacking it again, and I had probably 5-8 big fails for a sizable improvement. Set probably a dozen or so 1:31 times, failed very big best laps as well. Example being a lap 2 of 30.357 with an 84 on the pirahna straight and a single trick with sub optimal driving. Sadly no fruit for my labor in the end but it's alright.
This really has been a free WR ever since I got it the first time. Vayu took advantage of it when he did (granted his run really wasn't WR material to most people). It has been one of the weakest, if no the weakest WR for quite some time. But at the same time, pretty strong for all the nonsense this track can give (I think I was able to show a lot of people just how extremely unforgiving this track can be at a high level). It was a shame I couldn't push it down a bit more, I off screened my WR on lap 3 a few times, and keep in mind I had .4xx in mistakes on lap 3.
In conclusion, this track has been no where near its limits for years now. The WR is still appalling, to say the least. A "strong" run could start to be considered when someone hits a 1:30.7xx. If someone gets to my speed down the line and puts a bit of effort into it, there's no reason why someone shouldn't be able to hit a 1:30.5xx comfortably. Best splits can easily go down to 30.1xx 30.0xx 30.0xx without any strat changes. Implement a few crazy techs and you could be close to 1:29 territory even. Such claims may be thought as outrageous, but these are as realistic as it gets. I've made crazy claims in the past which have happened several times.
I wish whoever picks up the torch the best of luck, and when they bag the WR, just don't stop after that. At the very least, get it to a 1:30. It has been way too long overdue.
I do visit the MB frequently, and have watched a lot of people progress to very high skill levels in the game. With that, I raise my hat to you all. Near 6 years after the game's release and you guys are still out there pushing the limits, even if it's for a time .1 faster. Very commendable, it's refreshing to see.
Hope everyone is in good health. Happy karting.
