Placeholder for apricots of pre-May 2006 times
10/06/12 at 11:14:43

I'll be using this topic as a placeholder for dates of times set before the new site was launched as part of the project I've mentioned in the Site Suggestions topic.

-Christophe.

3.14sy*:
All PRs are from 18/08/04. However, the MC2 flap listed in his message is 15"46, whereas his time on the site is 15"56. Sami can confirm if this was a typo or not.

Alexander Vittal:
He sent in times in 4 different messages from 04/11/05 to 04/01/06. However, all his times were sent in the form of an attached Excel file, that can no longer be accessed from Yahoo Groups (the oldest available attachements are from 2009), so I can't know which PRs were sent in which message.

Andre Luis Trani:
Same issue as with Alexander Vittal, he sent his times in as an attached Word document. However, he only ever sent one Yahoo Groups message on 20/12/05, so I'm going to assume all his PRs are from then.

The only time by him available on Yahoo Groups is his BC2 flap (sent in by Sami on 02/02/08). I'm going to assume that all his other PRs predate Yahoo Groups since Sami would have sent his times there otherwise.

Another case of times being sent in by Excel attachments. His messages are from 24/04/03 and 22/07/03. His 24/04/03 messages only mentions MC1 times (that he later beat) so I'd assume that all his PRs are from 22/07/03.

Everyone except Arsenic forgot the period after their name.  Roll Eyes

Anyways, I just checked Yahoo Groups and I will have to go through 8000+ messages to finish this. I think it's safe to assume this will take me at least a few weeks (if not months).  Tongue

This inaccuracy bugged me as well, so it's great that you are picking up the proverbial glove Christophe! Cheers!  Smiley

Also, I think Yahoo message by Yahoo message is not the fastest way to go about this.
It's probably wiser to approach it from the top down, going profile by profile. See which times on a player's profile correspond to the installation date of the new system and figure out when it was actually submitted by doing a search. Say Nathan Stinson's MC2 PR, you'd search for Stinson AND MC2 (or Stinson AND 15"01)..and locate the message where he posted his 15"01 (http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/supermariokart/message/5296). You were probably gonna approach it that way anyway, but I'm just trying to help. God speed!  Wink

Just spoke to Lafungo, there will still be missing dates cos i have had a number of PR posts sent by email to me back in the 1999 - 2006 time from players who had trouble sending to yahoogroups, and even a lot by sms / text message. Even in recent years. So we wouldnt be able to complete this perfectly. Just a heads up.

KVD: I didn't realize Yahoo Groups had that search function, so I was actually thinking of sifting through those 8000+ messages.  Cheesy Thanks for that heads up, will make things much easier.

There's no rush, as the data that needs sifting through is static and there's no due date for this project.

If anything is a fail here, it is you poor attempt at imitating my posting style, as you signed with your nick rather than your name.

Also, while I'm posting in this thread: if you happen to know dates for PRs that weren't sent to YahooGroups or that predate YahooGroups, please communicate them to me so I can fill in the blanks. Just from the little I have looked into so far, certain players have quite a few missing dates (as you can see in the first post of this thread).

As mentioned before there were a number of times which werent sent to yahoogroups, moreso than ever in the pre 2006 time. A number were sent to my e-mail and unfortunately back then i used to delete emails. In the recent years yahoo hasn't assigned a limit so i pretty much keep most stuff (except junk mail which we all hate).

Ive even had a number of players sending PRs via sms to me (you know who you are hehe) Cheesy Since 1998, players often mixed up DP1 and MC2 laps commonly when sending PRs in a hurry; these typos were always resolved on my email and rare occasions the forum. Someone this week mixed up two tracks (though i spotted it and corrected it before updating). Due to all these reasons i really think that this project is a tonne of work, but in the end there will still be some annoying missing gaps that we won't be able to do anything about.

The best way to deal with that is just let the gaps be the gaps. I mean as in putting an "unknown", or perhaps just a year as the date of the PR (of which the time of origin is untraceable).

We still get a lot of information extra by resolving the dates of PR's that are traceable (mainly Yahoo group submissions), so imo the project is worthwhile no matter what.

Maybe while you are at it fix the dates that are a year out when submitted at the start of Jan?

I fully agree with what Karel said. Even if we end up with many gaps, I think any amount of fixing would be better than the current situation, where all old PRs are treated as being set the same day. As for the gaps, I'm fairly sure Penev can add the option for a "Unknown" or "????-??-??" date of some sort. If not, we can just leave them all at their current default date as a worse case scenario.

Sami, there are 2 PRs that I'd like for you to review: 3.14sy's MC2 flap and Kalle's GV3 flap. Details are in first post.

Thanks,
Christophe.

Yes 3.14sy's one i did try to look up and there must have been a discussion on email which i can't find, hence the problem. As for Kalle, we can probably ask him directly as hes not vanished yet. It may be ok to replace with Unknown for anything else.
