I bought MK7 for my sister for Christmas (She has a 3DS, I don't) and I have played it for about 4 or 5 hours or so since. It really is a let-down. The graphics are amazing and despite having hit competitive karting during the MKW era, I preferred that there were no bikes.

I've played only 2 races online, so I can't provide a decent opinion other than it seemed extremely boring to me. I like the majority of the new courses, but I think they've completely butchered some of the retro tracks (Coconut Mall looks fucking disgusting and Kalimari Desert seems.. plain).

150cc and Mirror offline modes are a complete joke. The rubberbanding in this game rivals MK64, which I thought even Nintendo had realised was ridiculous. Being green sniped off a wall while in the air is horrendously common and item rape rivals MKW online.

The unlock feature is pathetic. I found myself having to play 150cc shell cup and purposely lose just to guarantee 10 coins a race. I didn't unlock the B-Dasher or Slicks until around 2000 coins.

The TT I can't really say much about, as I have barely touched it. I've played SGB and TC only and I get bored extremely quickly, something that didn't happen (especially so early on) in MKW.

Alas, my sister seems to enjoy the game and that's what really matters - I'll be leaving home in February so I won't be playing the game after that anyway - but from what I have seen Nintendo really seems to have dropped the ball on this one.

I've played MK7 very little since Christmas Day and I also agree, it is a disappointment. I am very annoyed by the return of coins to MK, since you can never take your best lines, they hold back the potential of a track and can be hard to collect at times. The CPU rubberband AI is an utter joke, as well as their sniping. The unlocking system is utter bullshit. I have no idea what to accomplish in the game to unlock a certain feature as it is decided at random. I also can't believe that Nintendo now have the ability to patch games, yet nothing has been done whatsoever. This is a step back for MK.

You can always take your best lines, they just sometimes happen to include coins (cutting coins instead of cutting corners). The best line isn't always the same as it depends on how many coins you already have and wether you know you'll be shot in a second or not, but there's obviously still a best line.

To me, this is kinda like saying that going out of your way/the shortest line you can draw on the track equals not the best line, meaning aiming for stuff like zipper and the entire snaking/SSMT concept in previous karts are also not taking your best line.

How you can say they are hard to collect and at the same time hold potential back is also beyond me, lol.

Edit: Sometimes the coins of course won't be there either because someone took em. The whole "not the best line" thing just isn't quite true and it's not like the coin lines are easier than non-coin (you said yourself that you find them hard to collect).

I've been playing it for five days and am enjoying this game more than I did with MKW at release (although I hadn't found the community then so maybe that has something to do with it). The CPUs are ridiculously overpowered with the rubberbanding, but I kind of like that as it offers a challenge even to players that are far above class. (I know I'm in the minority there).

The only thing I hate so far is the random coins unlocking different parts. I hate not being able to see my full potential on courses because I don't have the best parts yet. The coins are kind of a fun addition for me, as it's not just about getting the best lines but you have to add a whole new complexity into the mix and it makes it more advanced. Without the coins MK7 TTing would be really boring because other than that it's kind of straight-forward.

I'm liking it so far, but that's not to say that my opinion could change in a week or so.

You've only played 4-5 hours and have 2,000 coins?  I find that incredibly hard to believe (if not impossible).  It took me longer than that to finish all of the gps one try each and I still only have 1,400 coins and was finishing each race with 10 coins.

He probably just played a lot longer than he realized...doing every track at WR time (obviously impossible since 50 and 100cc are involved), it would take nearly 6 hours to accumulate 2000 coins, and that doesn't even include time spent between races lol

I enjoyed getting a few WRs in the first two weeks, aswell as having a decent timesheet. However, having to wait so fucking long for mushroom tyres which screwed me up on the AF ranks for ages made me not want to play the game since xmas, so I played mksc from 26th-29th, so that I could tt all the tracks - however when I realised my tt times were all shit, and can't control the character in the same way that you can with a gba, I think I'll move back to mk7 again for a while.

I think it is pretty good, probably because I had no expectations before getting it. I like the graphics, driving, and tracks. I definatly won't bother time trialing and probably won't play wifi if it is as random as people say it is. I think it's decent overall, I just hate the 10 coin cap per race + the lack of missions. Also what Tim said, when you get hit with a blue shell, flying in a different direction each time is retarded. Either way just unlocking everything should provide some hours of entertainment and make it worthwhile to me, even if I never touch it again (which is very likely)

I guess I got semi-lucky. Just got BDasher with my 900 coin part. Don't have any gliders other than Flower Glider/Default Super Glider, and have all of the wheels except for the wooden ones (which I think are only important for 1-2 courses). Bodywise, I have Blue7, BDasher, but I'm missing Zucchini and Egg1. Not horribly unlucky as I've seen people get in the past.

IMO online mode is the biggest disappointment.. Makes me wonder when nintendo's gonna realize the connection these days really needs to be beyond average.. Not even mentioning the luck-factor in the game.

Example:
I'm in second place, have three red shells around me and one red shell spare. Final round: I fire all my shells, in pairs of two, towards the number one, who is pretty close in front of me. It's about the final straight line you have to drive in Kalimari Desert. He defends with only 1 freaking banana.. My shells break against his almighty banana, I freaking didn't even hit the guy!!!
Then a blue shell passes me, I see him hit the brakes, but a little bit too late.. So I pass him and see he still has that danged banana behind him!!!! WTF!!!!!

This didn't happen to me just once, this happens to me ALL THE FREAKING TIME.

Here's a video of what I'm talking about:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fFygDDiXfyI

(the dude did not have 2 three string bananas before you're suggesting that, I always watch the bottom screen to see what items there are in the field. He had 1 banana, when I passed him he had one other spare banana due to the item boxes he drove through, which he still had when he was hit by the blue shell..

ps: this is not because I have slow internet, coz I have the fastest internet available in my region and set my router open to connection of any device I want to use in combination with the wifi connection.

This is without mentioning the stupid time consuming coin collecting stuff in order to unlock everything.. I'm just over 5000 now, one month into the game.. I think I won't even try to bother unlocking the golden parts. Couldn't they just put the glider to unlock with 2 star overall ranking and the kart with 3 stars!? xD this is really too much hassle..

AND BRING BACK THE FREAKING MKDD / MK64 MT SYSTEM!! MKWii was lame without it, now they continue to use these lame mt's for their mk games..

Game is not interesting and annoying as !@#$ when playing online.. Nintendo really needs to change it's directions, play the Wind Waker and get the wind back in the sails! Man if I were a big part of nintendo this game would feel entirely different and the online capabilities of nintendo would be my main priority to improve upon!

I say postpone the Wii U and fix the freaking ugliness! Then bring the Wii U with a big launch party, launching Smash Bros, Super Mario Mii and some shitty Call of Duty game to haul in the lost fanbase!

Part of the reason is probably because you fired the reds in too quick succession - there was a similar problem with mkwii, if you fire two or three too soon after each other, they're bound to hit each other before reaching the target, and this generally happens on a turn or just before they hit the target.
But I agree, the wifi system isn't great, but it's okay for now.
