Could someone give me some advice, i'm a 100% n00b and i need some advice to uplock the staff ghost. How do i play good enough. I know how to snake... But maybe i don't snake enough. Any video would be very helpful. Btw i'm Benjamin Block in the chart. I can play 60 or 50 Hz. I have only played this game about 3 times because i sucks and therefore don't like it. Answer to Alex question: No i'dont play the train i use the bulletbill.

The train is the best kart, but you have to unlock it first.

Have you checked videos on youtube yet? There's videos for all courses, many by players from here. The videos will show you good racing lines. You don't have to snake as well as the youtube videos because the barrel train helps with snaking continuously, and you haven't unlocked it yet.

I would prefer to play 60hz, it's definitely the better mode for non-top players because you don't need the perfection, once you reach TOP50 or so and feel like: "ah, 60hz is too fast to pull off hard strats..." you can eventually get another 10 ranks with changing the hz. But you can off course continue with 60hz, it's even better, because the higher you climb in the overall rankings, the even more higher will you be in the 60hz's. For example (ARR just for navigation): I have a Myth A ARR combined, which puts me into #16 in AF: My 50hz ARR is close to Myth B (still Myth C), and I am ranked as #16 aswell in the 50hz AF. My 60hz ARR is atm at a good Myth B (2.9xxx), but I am already #10 in 60hz AF, even without having the full potential here. You must know, I am truly a "combined player", I have some weaker 50hz courses/laps, and I have some weaker 60hz courses/laps. To sum it all up: 60hz allows you to reach higher ranks in 60hz AF ranks, while with 50hz you can do more precise 3laps if you are a bit shaky with lap 3s (like me), but you really have to practise the MT style of 50hz, is very different to 60hz imo because the 50hz MTs need more "energy" to get loaded, I mean you have to load them a bit slower to be 100% sure to get them when you start playing it. In 60hz it doesn't matter how hard you press, sometimes it could be that your MT does even load automatically fully with one motion, but then there's either something wrong with your Ctrlr or you just had luck and did a weird motion that caused the "fast MT".

Ah well to sum it all up (or if you're to lazy to read the shit I wrote there), just try out what is the best hz mode for you, practise with Barrel Train (the locomotive) and when you got the hang of MTs you can start with Straight Stretched MTs (means you let the MT flow a bit and load the other MT very fast after it, like snaking, just that you have to wait before you start the nest MT!). That's not A-Tech, this technique is a bit harder to learn, you will see when you are better, it isn't worth it for you atm, learn fast MTing first!

(That was probably the longest post I've ever written without using smileys)

Yes, it is without question the best kart.  Using any other kart is just handicapping yourself unnecessarily. The only exception to this rule is that Toad's Kart is preferred by some on DK Mountain due to its acceleration and forgiveness with the bumps.  Even there; though, the Barrel Train is as good or better in the highest levels of driving.

So the barrel train should be used from the get go then? I am just curious if there is any other kart that is a little worse than that but gets you used to the "feel" of the way the game works I guess before using the main kart, sorry if that is a little confusing. Grin

^Because you don't use any Advanced strat at the beginning (A-Tech, SSMTs, whatever) you can in theory use every lightweightkart. MTs are the same with every kart, but are different in length, means, some are stronger, some are weaker, but that's just minimal at lightweightkarts. The heavyweightkarts have much shorter MTs, so you shoudln't use them in general (for example: Bowsers Kart, the 6 wheels one, has only half as long MTs as the lightweight karts!).

Start using the Barrel Train anyway, it's easy to get the grip of it, why then start with another kart? Roll Eyes

Today I sent in my terrible timesheet for this game  Smiley I'll probably end up being around low 400s ):
other than the driving mechanics that feel very awkward my biggest complaint is missing a crapload of  MTs, sometimes I can charge them in the blink of an eye and other times I feel like I'm doing the exact same thing but they just won't charge, what's the matter? I developed this bad habit of looking at the sparks rather than the road now  :'(
My guess is that I tend to push the stick diagonally (?) and it won't go far enought to register as MT (even though I bring the stick to its limit) so I actively force me to press "down" and left/right (down is just mental, I suppose this way it's centered) and it works fine, but after a while it stops working so I guess it's just psychological  Smiley

Do you have any tip in that regard? The missed MTs part, not the psychological part.

LOL, it's MKDS mentality, but this is a stick, not a d-pad, so i think you just need to train on LC MTing, and for the first times looking at the stick sometimes, the rest will come like a watersilde.

I would recommend to practise MTs on either PB or MB, because they have long wide straights in it. Good to practise precise, and tight MTs (if you don't already use A-Tech).

Btw, are you using 50hz or 60hz? Because, when you play 50hz I have the same problem. But it's somehow related to the 50hz mode, because it's about a fifth slower and you have to get the feeling for it. No worry, I also needed about 4 weeks until I got the MTs in 50hz to work Smiley.

I'm playing 60hz. Way before having access to internet, when the game was released, I thought of cheating to beat the staff ghosts by using 50hz, but already at that time I noticed how MTs NEVER registered as I wanted too and never used 50hz ever since.

I'm definitely getting better with practice but my inconsistency really bugs me. I really wish the stick could only slide left and right and see if that'd help, so I'd know for sure that's my mistake.
It's so annoying to drive awesome laps and missing everything on the last lap

if you're using the tip of your thumb to control the stick, then maybe try moving your thumb about a cm or two higher over the stick, maybe you will get more grip. You can also try moving the angle of your hand or even the controller.

There are times where a "lose" the good position, and start missing MTs left right and center.. okay not center. Actually i find i miss more right MTs than left.. but i usually find a good controller position to start getting that little bit of consistency i have again.

My friend told me she was gonna post me my DD disc back today so might try some in a week or so. Since I only bothered playing the game for a few hours when it first came out (and a few mins at this years CDM) I too will be a complete noob to begin with, so have a few questions:

(1) How do you unlock the train kart?
(2) Is there noticeable lag when running the disc through a wii on a 42" plasma?
(3) Are official GC controllers the best or will some 3rd party ones be fine to begin with? (I have only 3rd party at the moment)
(4) Should I start with 60Hz?
(5) What characters should be used or does this not matter?
(6) Do you have to unlock tracks by playing GP?
(7) Are there strats anywhere on what shortcuts are allowed/not allowed and best paths etc?
(8) What the f is A-tech?
(9) Can you save ghosts with the wii's internal memory or on SD cards?
(10) Is it true there are no replays?
(11) How many more noob questions can I ask?
(12) What point in the charts is considered a respectable/average starting point where someone with a decent amount of other karting could aim to be in a few weeks?
(13) Is the game actually any fun, as when I first played it I really didn't like it? (it just wasn't mk64)
(14) How helpful are the DD community when it comes to helping out noobs with lots of dumb questions?

Thanks to anyone who takes the time to answer some/all of the above
p.s. the answer to (11) is currently 3... though that total my climb in the near future.

1.: If I remember correctly you have to play 150cc Star Cup and finish it with gold.
2.: Can't answer that Undecided
3.: I'd say if you can play with those 3rd party crap controllers it's up to you Cheesy
4.: Nah, it's up to you what you play at the beginning. (won't say more, or I will be flamed by crazy Americans)
5.: Every Character which is a leightweight is fine.
6.: You have to unlock the Special Cup, but that's so long ago that I did it, can't help you here aswell.
7.: There's only one SC (banned) anyway, so you can be sure that your times are legit Wink
8.: It's like a SSMT in MK64, only that you have to go from A before you start an MT to get a freaking straight MT. Advanced strat, so don't try it out. I mean it.
9.: You need a GC Memory Card, otherwise you can't save times anyway.
10.: There are replays, but only shitty ones with no timer or first person view.
11.: 3
12.: In a few weeks - let's say 4 - you can easily reach the TOP400 if you play like 5 times in a week.
13.: That's up to your taste. I just love that game from the first time I played it, just because of the special MT system Smiley.
14.: See your post time, see my post time

Cheers Chris,

(9) lol, I forgot this wasn't cartridge game! If playing on a wii can you use GC memory cards (can't be bothered get my wii out of where I stored it yet to check if it has a slot for them) or will I not be able to save times at all?

I doubt I'll have the time to play 5 days a week (actually I'm certain I won't have anywhere near) so might take me a little longer to get to that level (though I've never been outside top300 before on a  kart game to begin with let alone top400 so I'm hoping it shouldn't take too long to get into the swing of things).

You can put in memory cards at the same part of the wii as the GCN Controllers Wink.

Oh and MKDD TOP300 is a lot harder than the others if you haven't practised before imo.

Also, MKDD has a frequent and good updater so you can't go wrong with starting off Smiley

Hmm I play really seldomly, you could say I average 1 or 2 hours every 3 days since I started time trialing, about one month ago, and I am 485th combined, 374th 60hz. I really only play 60hz for now because of bad memories of 50hz when the game first came out. I consider myself very barely barely barely acceptable at this game  Cheesy it doesn't take too much time, just a regular effort to improve.
I guess top 300 combine while playing only 60hz is a decent goal and you can say you are "ok" when you get there

Game arrived back to me in the post his morning, probably have a go tomorrow. Going to play GP mode to begin with as practice as I don't have a GC card to save things yet (ordered one off ebay should arrive in a few days). Then I have to unlock everything so don't expect any TT times from me for a week or so.
