Blood donation
08/16/10 at 12:00:01

I started donating blood regularly last autumn and today was my fifth time. Now I'd like to discuss about it and maybe even spark new people to give it a try. Millions of people around the world need different parts of blood yearly, so your blood could even save a life one day.

Are there many blood donors here? If yes, cool. If not, why not? It's easy, painless, only takes a few minutes of your time and you might even get a free snack, some small gift or even a cash reward for doing it. Some people will experience lightheadedness or even lose consciousness for a while, but I've personally never had any negative symptoms from blood donation. In Finland the blood donation tour travels all around the country so at least in bigger cities you can usually go to a donation spot without having to travel very far. It's also an easy way to find out your blood type and hemoglobin concentration.

I'd also be interested in hearing what goes around the blood business in your country. Here men can donate every 2 months while women every 3 months. No money is paid for it, but you will always get a snack and sometimes even a small gift.

Oh yea, I'm an A+ Smiley

I would give blood if I could.

But I have too much Iron in my blood and I go everynow and then have a pint drawn so that it keeps the level of Iron to a safe mark.

What I do not understand is why they can not give my blood to someone that has an iron deficiency. But they do not. It gets disposed of.

I wouldn't mind donating blood, but i'm too lazy to go there to do it, stuff like this always costs time and i don't like wasting time

if i would just get $10 i would probably do it. Not that i really feel like selling my blood, but that would be like selling my time  Tongue

@Dave: Too bad you can't donate, but thumbs up anyways Smiley Iron definiciency can be corrected by eating iron tablets, so it's probably just easier to eat those rather than to receive blood from a person with too much iron in their blood.

@Ivo: I don't know how the system works in Holland, but here the system works like a charm. The blood donation tour has tons of different locations near the area where I live and they visit those places every couple of months at least. I usually check the tour dates online and go donate when it suits me best. The normal place I go to is close to my school so I usually go after school on my way home. Today I visited another location on my way home from the movies. The people working there are very efficient and all in all the whole procedure takes me around 30 minutes max.

I've never needed outside blood myself, but I have a few friends who'd probably not be alive without a blood transfusion. I think I can sacrifice 30 minutes of my life to do this. Also, I like the sandwiches they serve Wink

Edit:
@Alex: Cool guy Smiley With the Finnish rules I'd need to live up to be around 185 years old to break his record and still I couldn't do it as the age cap here for donating is 65 years. Are you a donor yourself?

I'm AB+, which is only about 3% of the caucasian population. I donate whenever I can, even though only AB+ people can receive my blood. However, you need to realize that one donation can help up to 4 people, because it can be separated into different components: red blood cells, plasma, platelets, and cryoprecipitate. The last three all help blood to clot, so if someone has a bleeding disorder, they can receive one of those components to help out.

The place where I donate lets you draw for either a free McD's filet-o-fish or a different (better) prize. They also give you gifts when you reach a gallon in donations, or five, or whatever. Most places give out these gifts just as a little incentive to get people to donate.

Hospitals will use the blood type of the receiver if just possible, so therefore it is very important that the blood banks have a steady inflow of all different blood types. There are tons of different other factors too that determine if a person can receive a type of blood so it's a essential that a large variety of different people donate regularly. Using O- blood for everyone is generally only used in critical situations where there is no time to find out what blood type the patient is.

At least in Finland a lot of old people, who are the biggest donor group, are closing on the donating age cap of 65 years and not enough young people have gotten into donating to cover up for them. The blood bank has often been in mild trouble with not having enough people donating and they are sometimes short of different types of blood.

US laws allow you to make donations every three days and 24 times a year.  I donated 15 times back in 2007 before my arm swelled up for a month from an experienced nurse attepting to extract blood outside the vein.  I couldnt do any physical activity with that arm.  I wish you didnt have to make appointments as the hours coincide with work, so I only end up donating 5 times per year now.  Whole blood takes about 10 minutes with the needle.  Platelets take 1 hour for a single unit and 2 hours for a double:

The every 3 days thing is for platelet donations only. Whole blood donations are limited to every 56 days.

In the US, we don't have an age limit, but some of the other reasons for deferral will exclude most people over 65 anyway, lol.

And hospitals will try to use the recipient's blood type in most cases. O and A are the most common (in Caucasians, anyway. It differs between races). The blood bank in my lab is stocked full of A and O, but it struggles to get A- and B- because Rh negative people make up only about 15% of the population. But even though the supply is limited, the demand for those rare types isn't too high either, so it all balances out.

I'm sure the cost for synthetic blood will come down in time.

Would be really nice to avoid those conversations with people who demand your blood.

If you're being paid to give blood, you aren't actually a blood donor, but a blood vendor-- a donor is someone who GIVES (French: donner), if you SELL then you are a vendor (vendre, to sell)  Smiley

You do not become a good citizen by doing good things for money or rewards, but to simply help your fellow man.

I donated blood today for the first time.  It was very routine, no problems or anything.  Two of my friends fainted however, which was quite funny.   Smiley

I donated this Monday for the sixth time. I've never had any kind of problems with it and don't feel different at all afterwards. I have a friend who isn't allowed to donate anymore as she passed out after donating.
