I'm not sure what is confusing about having 7 updaters who each log in on their specific day - be it a Tuesday or Friday etc

I don't really mean confusing, but if there was an updater for each day of the week, chances are, as Chuck said the rota would fall apart very quickly.

Also, as for news I would have to agree with Kevin. Although there might not be a lot of activity on the site having written news every week would allow more accurate POW awards and it might actually encourage more people to play when they see the site is being updated regularly. Also, to all the people that said they would be able to update if you get picked please make sure to keep up the work even after the novelty wears off because I know some of the updaters on here and the other pages' are full of enthusiasm when they start but quickly slack off!  Smiley

I'd be happy to help with the news. I like writing. I know I haven't been around much until recently but I've been getting back into kart. I plan to pretty much play MKSC exclusively for the next few months as I'm not going to bring any other video games to college with me. I know the game relatively well (although my rank doesn't really indicate that). I'd be willing to do weekly updates... it's really not that big of a deal for me. I wouldn't slack on them... especially once I start playing again (I'm picking up a new cartridge tomorrow).

I'm really interested in doing this. I want to contribute and get more involved with the community.

Smiley

EDIT: As far as that resume thing goes...

Real Name: Jacob Goldfinger

Forum Name: chili

Experience: Updated MK64 twice. A lot of writing experience in the past.

What I'm prepared to do: Write enthralling, detailed updates that provide full coverage on MKSC activity. English is my first language and I can guarantee that the updates will be easy to read and have proper grammar (excuse any grammatical errors in this post, it's late and this is a forum post so I'm not proofreading). I can also speak a little Chinese if that helps.

If people are really willing to see weekly news updates, then let it be.

Keep in mind the activity we have currently is rather exceptionnal, sometimes there are so few new PR's that you couldn't write a proper interesting news update.

Most of the time it won't be a problem for me to do weekly news, but later after the holidays, when my studies will involve doing some trips on week-ends, it will be harder, so a second-hand news writer would be necessary I guess. But we're not there yet...

In my experience since the site began, the more people update, the more PR's which seem to start being made Smiley

Lets try it my way, i figure if people do drop out then its covered as opposed to not.

^Maybe for news, but times updating was fine with me alone (hell, I've done this alone or almost alone for the last year or so), and I know I'm not the only one that feels this way. To put things in perspective, I updated 12 messages last night, which is 1.71 messages a day. I know that for putting the Yahoogroups entries into the parser, then updating them, one message really isn't worth updating, and I think that with 7 updaters, that will make the rotation fall apart. People won't stick with it if there's nothing to do...at least that's how I'd feel, because if I went in every week to not have any updates to do, I would not feel like I was needed. Plus, even if activity picks up, that doesn't make it significantly more time to put the additional entries into the parser -- all I have to do is put names to the entries and make sure that the entries are picked up correctly.

I think the big problem was news updates not getting done, so that part of it definitely needs an overhaul, but times updating is fine for the moment. Give me one or two people that I can call on when I won't be around on a particular week, but we don't need 7 updaters for a site that gets 10-20 messages a week.

I guess 7 updaters would probably be too much if you look at the activity, but who cares? We can still have someone updating one day, even if that would only be 2 messages per day. Can'T see any cunfusing things about it Undecided

You can give me any day you want, I don'treally care which one. If I had to pick one, I'd probably say Friday

I can update whenever you want; there's no particular day in my usual week, it's just school-homework-computer-sleep everyday (except Sunday). Tongue

Knowing the MKSC activity, if the times updater program is the same as MKDS' and MKW's it will take less than five minutes to do a daily update, though.

So what has been decided so far Tom ?

I'll still start the news update that I'll pass to the next news writer if I'm not chosen, but a reply wouldn't hurt us Tongue

Ok,

Here is the roster

http://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0Aqv6mLF-nUkrdGhqd2pVT20tdXNYTERSem5ydWZUa0E&s...

Let me know if the link doesn't work.

Essentially this will be the roster. As you can see basically you all have your allocated slots, if you miss it then it might be worth dropping a note in the updating thread. As you will also see, April will act as chief updater for times, she can/will update when she wants and fix shit when someone makes a mistake etc.

Anyhow,

With all the new blood, if you dont know how to do something then we need to train etc.

I wonder if Alex has a guide to using the parser etc.

I'll get you all log-ins for updating which Alex will send to you.

Ok, so for all those who are going to be doing written updates, when you log into greymatter (you'll get a link from Alex P) you get faced with the options, choose Add New Entry.

At this point its pretty self explanatory, you need to fill in the top bar (name your update) and then skip to the main box to enter your text/code.

To use the default colours which i've always used then the codes are;

<FONT COLOR="#00cc00"> for the purple which i use for titles
<FONT COLOR="#ffff00"> for the yellow which i use to highlight names

I did used to use green for the awards too but you can pick any colours you want, try clicking on the colours in the two lines above this box for examples of more colours you could use.

Keep it simple though, no one wants to read rainbow road style news.. (or do they?!)

Would be preferably to keep some level of uniformity; i.e. Announcements/News/Players+movement/New Players/Awards

Ive made it so people doing the written update will be the people deciding the pow. There is a website lacey made to see the movement etc really clearly but you should also be fairly clued up on who's made what progress in order to make the call. oooOOOHh some responsibility thrown in there. If you're not comfortable making these decisions let me know and i'll make the call for you. Generally there is a loose principle i use but each to their own.

Check spelling mistakes and also keep it lighthearted and positive. If you're updating about yourself i'd try to keep it 3rd person but again, some people reference themselves 1st person Smiley and there's no harm in that.

No abusing the rights, anyone who does will be stripped immediately and may suffer more at the hands of the evil moderators Smiley

Lets see if this works, if it doesn't then we can mix it up and change it around etc. Nothing is set in stone.

Some comments :

1 - Some of the people in that list clearly mentioned they didn't want to do written news but only times updates (DarkRoy, maybe Rob and Web...)

2 - Apparently Howes left the forum Roll Eyes

3 - I'm 95% sure I won't be here the week of the 25th Sept. put someone else instead for that date. Any other week from September to mid-December should make it for me Smiley

This schedule doesn't start until next week so don't worry  Wink

Also, Mick is right that I said that I would just do time updates but if for any reason someone isn't able to do written news I could substitute sometime.

Since Howes left, I'll just take the Monday spot, unless Chuck wants to switch so I can still do Tuesdays (which would work better for me if possible).

I'll send a mass PM on how to use the parser to all the new people and keep my eyes peeled for anything strange Smiley

Also Tom, would it be cool if I started a thread specifically for times updates? I can catch things much quicker that way.

Once you're added as a moderator on the Yahoogroups, you can approve all the pending messages, but until you have the login from Alex, you can't update times. You should get it here soon.

Ok, I suppose we haven't been added as moderators yet then. I was just wondering because your instructions in the PM started out vaguely with "approve the messages" which tells me it should be pretty obvious, like some little box that says approve or something. I don't see any of that, though.

I'll try to be patient.
